So ive just finished assembling and base coating my new titan,
I spent a bit of time while building it to find a pose where the model was stable without a base, mainly so its easier to fit onto a table without a dinner plat stuck to its legs plus i think it looks better with out the base.
and heres the but, ive used it in a couple of apocalypse games now and ive been told i need to base it by several people to make it game legal.
Does any one know one way or the other if i need to base it?

Do Not base it. There are much smaller walkers in 40k without bases (Defilers and Soul Grinders come to mind), and it is 100% legal without the base.

Is the model supplied with a base? If so, yes. Not? then no.

Most Titans I've seen aren't based. Does it say in the Apocalypse rules to base it? Does it even say to measure anything from the base? No? Didn't think so.

What titan is it?
I'd say just leave it unbased, but some of them will be much more sturdy with it and no one wants to see one topple over.

Magnetize the base?
That way, you'll be able to bring up the base only when other persons ask it without ruining the model to your eyes when it is on display at home.

Kinda have to base certain Titans. Eldar ones, for instance, really don't do well unbased.

Technically, a model only has to go on a base if it comes with one.
None of the Imperial Titans come with bases, nor do they need one for stability if you pose them correctly.
In assault you treat them like any other vehicle, get in base contact with them.
if people still insist on it having a base ask them where in the rules it says that? If they show you the page that says a model must be on the base it was supplied with tell them it doesn't come with a base.

I have built two titans...take it from me....base your warhound. It adds to the stability exponentially. The best method I find is to use a couple of cd's. scuff them up and then base them as whatever you'll usually be playing on.
If your Titan is going to be standing with both feet firmly planted on the ground then you don't need to worry TOO much. But for any kind of dynamic pose, you'll want to slap a couple of bases on the feet

Sure, you don't need a base, but why not? You could do some pretty cool stuff with a titan-sized base.

I don't know what kind of Titan you have, but I'm just imagining this interchange:
you: "hey here's my titan"
them: "hey it's cool but you need a base"
you pull out a frisbee-sized disc and stick it to the bottom.
Cause a Reaver Titan's base would be huge!

Looking through the comments I haven't found anyone mention if you have a base how does your other smaller models walk under them if they are on a base. I don't know much about titans because I haven't been luck enough to see one irl Automatically Appended Next Post: I hope that sounded right

in my group, we have 2 reavers, 2 warhounds, a phantom and a pair of revenants.
the eldar stuff is mine, and only the reveneants are based, and only because it makes them just that much more stable, and less likley to fall over. it does give an extra inch or so around the edge from its legs, so assaults tend to catch a break when it charges or gets charged... but no one has complained yet. the other titans are simply either to big, or steady enough on their own legs that they really dont need a base. and rules wise, its a fricken TITAN. i dont think it really matters if it has one or not, since its weapons will 90% of the time extend past whatever base you have it on, and if someone would be able to charge its base, they can probally still get leg.
i would build your titan. if it seems like he is wobbley or could use the support, then make a base for him, and get all scenic crazy with it. its a great chance for some nice display stuff. just make sure its sturdy enough to weight him down. those titans can get pretty top heavy with the larger ones. (believe me i know)

This was my question as well. Who is worried about games that have no force org chart, vortex grenades being thrown and Titans that cost 500-2500 points stomping around. You really can't take apocalypse games serious.

on another site one of the admins has built 3-4 titans. every one, TMK, is bassed. However, he did it before building and paint. IF yours is built and painted you may have a problem.
Myself, after dropping BIG money on a FW Titan, would base it just so some clown dosent hip check the table and see the titan go splat. We all know 'normal' models wobble.

Base it.
If nothing else it makes the model structurally sounder.
It's an expensive model, you want to look after it.
It's a Titan, you can always ignore the base in game, and you're going to need to agree its use in game anyway.

With a base that size, you can't ignore it. Its going to interfere with terrain, other models, etc...

My phantom is bassed, not for the fact that it needs a base, just for the fact id hate to see it fall down due to someone (proberly me) knocking the table. But i can see the point of the base being huge (it is) and getting in the way of everything.
