I know it's the Daily Mail, but anyway:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2323316/FBI-surrounds-house-Saudi-student-following-sightings-pressure-cooker-pot-cooking-rice.html

A Saudi student living in Michigan was questioned in his home by FBI agents after neighbours saw him carrying a pressure cooker and called the police.

Talal al Rouki had been cooking a traditional Saudi Arabian rice dish called kabsah and was carrying it to a friend's house.

According to reports in a Saudi newspaper on Friday, the FBI are increasingly vigilant about 'pressure cooker' home-made bombs after the Boston bombers used one to make an explosive

The Saudi journal, Oukaz reported on the story of the Saudi student who had FBI agents come to his home, following a tip-off from neighbours that he was seen moving about with a pressure cooker bomb.

While armed agents surrounded his apartment block, other agents, asked a 'nervous' Mr al Rouki if they could come in to question him.

'They asked me about my major, when I arrived in the US and what I do in my spare time' he told the Saudi newspaper.

Officers said that two days earlier that a woman had seen him walking out of his apartment carrying the pressure cooker pot, which was described as ‘bullet coloured’.

The young student showed them his pressure cooker and explained to them he used to make a rice dish.

An FBI agent said: 'You need to be more careful moving around with such things, Sir'

Mr al Rouki has become a focus of attention now in the Saudi press.

According to reports in a Saudi newspaper, the FBI are increasingly vigilant about ‘pressure cooker’ home-made bombs and have a keen eye on Arabs who reside in the US.

On one hand its good the FBI's keeping an eye out for this more, however I get the sickening feeling that the 'tip' would have never got called in if anyone else had been holding that pressure cooker

You know what they say; if it's colored like a duck and carried by a minority like a duck, it's a bomb. Er, that's how that saying goes, right?

In other words 'You need to be more careful about being brown, Sir'

I mean, seriously, people are calling the police because someone owns a pressure cooker? I'm supprised they didn't tell him he was lucky there wasn't an off duty officer around to shot him or have a SWAT team storm his house.

Oh man, if there was a way for that to never get taken out of its sarcastic context, I would consider using it as a sig.

Well, we might be laughing about it now, but what if he did, in fact, tried to do the same thing and maybe killed a few people?

Better check one time too much than never.

I Think he'd be smarter than to walk around with it in broad daylight if that was the case. I've been wrong before however. I do think that with as much coverage as the marathon got they'd be a tad smarter. Not always known for using their brains however.

Nothing to hide nothing to fear? How about the police check everyones bags or have access to there PC's at all times? How about the police be able to walk in to your house whenever they want to check you are not doing anything illigal, cos, you know, better that than someone be able to go on making bombs?

Its a matter of the balance of civil libertys, and this guy seems to have been targeted because of nothing more than the colour of his skin, which is odd given that the bombers were white.

Seeing a young Muslim with a pressure cooker,
Describing it as "bullet" coloured,
Calling in the FBI to question him.

That's Pure Michigan

It was horrible, there was cheesecake and pork chops everywhere!

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.

so useless, racist, and brownshirt-esque of them.

not only are they racially profiling, and over reacting about nothing, but even if this WAS a real terrorist it took them two days to respond.

way to fail

We've been asking you to do this for some time, what with your compulsion to cook naked and the floor to ceiling windows in the kitchen.

Don't put words in my mouth.

The fact is that recently, two terrorists tried to kill a bunch of people with bombs that looked very similar to what the "victim" in this situation. And: it's not the FBI that caught him, neighbors informed the police because they were worried. They had to act. And again: nothing happened. Some questioning that might not have been a pleasant experience, so what? Better safe than sorry.

Exactly, it isnt pleasent, because one slip of the mouth is all it needs.
Especially when you are a targeting minority such as this man.

I'm not putting words in your mouth, I'm taking your argument to its logical conclusion...

The point is this happened to someone from the Middle East, or do we start phoning the police every time we see someone cooking rice? There was no evidence of ANYTHING suspicious other than being brown in possession of a cooking implement. They did not have to act, they had to do some more investigation and then if they had to talk to him, not to make out that it was is fault.

Want to see what happens when your argument follows through? See the case of Charles de Mendez, shot dead for being swathy in possession of a ruck sack after the 7/7 bombings.

My problem is not the FBI investigating, they have an obligation to investigate every credible threat, but the attitude that it was his fault and your attitude that it is "better to be safe than sorry". That is the attitude that strips us of our rights.

Bullets are usually lead. The casings are sometimes brass.

Okay, everyone knows your idiot neighbour is an idiot, and this one definitely fits the stereotype of the xenophobic midwestern busybody. But I think the part that actually irks me about the FBI's handling of it was that they seemed to scold the kid for being Arabic and cooking.
