I'm getting a bit into Waarhammer for the first time in a while and am dusting off some old High Elves I have kicking around the house. I was looking at the new army books for the game and was wondering what units for the different armies you folks think are really clever and which ones are just downright silly and a stretch to include in an army.
This doesn't neccesarily relate to how powerful a unit is, just the imagination behind it.

The skull cannon and soul grinder for daemons spring to mind. They are way too 40k for my tastes.

I play and love my Skaven, and of course I own and have painted a Doomwheel. Yet I must admit it i pretty silly, WE GET IT YOUR RATS. It is a giant hamster wheel, piloted by a rat, and powered by a ton of giant rats inside of it, running, with two giant lightning cannons on the side, I can just imagine the concept team sitting around in a pet store designing Skaven units based on what they saw.

I really think the new Empire griffon is obnoxiously huge. The old karl franz model was a good scale, as I don 't think griffons outsize dragons. Never like dragon ogres as a unit, just lazy design.

I have to second the soul grinder as one of the worst models to be included in fantasy, ever. Clearly a cash grab by GW, done with no consideration of the aesthetics of fantasy.
The Empire wizard wagons are silly, but kind of go along with the current vibe of the Empire and its contraptions.
The WoC shrine is rather stupid looking imho.

A lot of the newer huge units are a little silly too (Hurricanum, Mortis Engine, etc.).

That's probably because, in the Soul Grinder's instance anyway, it was literally a 40k unit they decided would now be able to be fielded in WHFB too. I'm with you on the Soul Grinder, but I quite like the Skull Cannon.
I think the Empire Steam Tank is a little silly too, mainly because of the aforementioned 40k-ifying. If anyone, it should be the dwarves who have something like that, not The Empire.

Since most people are full of hate, I figure I'll mention some love... My personal favorite is the Coven Throne, probably. Not only is the model awesome, but the idea behind it is pretty cool, too - a bone and stone palaquin, holding lounging vampires, held aloft by a host of spirits. The Soul Grinder has always grinded on my soul a little bit, too. GUFFAW OH YEAH, and the Skaven Hellpit Abomination is really awesome.

But yeah, ever since they figured out how to make huge models at an efficient price it has been down-hill. I liked what they did with the giant spider for the gobbos and the Khemrian stuff, but it seems they just went off the deep end somewhere.

I don't mind big models, but I dislike the Empire war wagons because of how rickety they look. This is true to a lesser extent for the VC altars, the Ogre monsters, some Daemon chariots...
Basically, anything that looks overly topheavy or unstable bothers me. Like the first Khorne chariot, those bloodletters are going to get knocked the f off as soon as they hit melee.

I love High Elf Dragons, but the thing that's bugging me is that they're both way too small and way too weak in-game compared to fluff.

The Ogre Stonehorn is absolutely brilliant. Most of the chariots I find to be grandiose, but not ugly or unfitting. The Gyrocopter is horrid, in my opinion. Especially because it doesnt represent who the Dwarfs are as an aesthetic; nor does the contraption match up to any of the monsters (Vargheists, Dragons, Demigryphs) or flying cav (Peg Knights) even though it is the Dwarfs only unit of the sort. Pity for them until they get the new book (c'mon Bear, Ram, or Ox cavalry!!!!).

Well the thread is about silly models, not just the ones we like. I agree with you on the coven throne it is very nice, but not so useful in game. Not a fan of the HPA though.

Feels weird to be the odd person out liking a model most people hate. I really like the Khorne Chariot, though I think it definitely fits 40k more than Fantasy. I guess now I know how people who like the Dreadknight feel?

I like the Soulgrinder stats, but it's just so HUGE. You see it and you're like, wow, that must have 23894 attacks. Nope. 4. That's like 1/100th attack for every inch of its surface area. I mean if it fell on something it should do 6D6.
I don't mind the motorycles much. I think the TK mega models look doofy. They look like old Star Wars transports.
The Steam Tank has grown on me, but it's no IG tank. Which all look super cool by comparison.

The steam tank and gyrocopter have been around forever so I think they kind of have established themselves. I am not a fan of the flying bath tub gyrocopter though and like the earlier versions better.
For the Khorne Cannon I use this as a proxy
It is larger than a chariot but that really is a disadvantage and I am not going to buy the motorcycles since I think they are goofy looking.

I love my Necrosphinx. Such an awesome looking model. Entirely the reason that I got into TK, which makes it doubly a pity that it is so often underwhelming in-game.
I'm gonna vote for Lizardmen Cold One riders for my "silly" entry. The damn cold ones look stoned, confused and vaguely irritated with the world.

I guess it depends on context and execution. I quite like silly units in some armies such as Orcs & Goblins and Skaven... I'm thinking the Goblin Doom Diver and Giant Hamster Wheel of Doom here.
There's very little in Fantasy which doesn't work as a concept in itself, it's usually the model which lets it down.
That being said...
The Mournfang Cavalry are silly. Ogres riding giant cats? Uh. Huh.
