Hello dakka, Its BBL. you might remember me from such threads as the Mighty Morphin Power Primarchs or my multitude of other P&M blogs. Well, today marks the start of one of my oldest warhammer dreams. Making a homebrew chapter. I've been inspired by many other dakkaites when I was just a lurker, especially IceAngel (and a whole host of others, I just don't want to namedrop you all when what I need to say about IA fits best). When I first found dakka, I was amazed by his chapter. Now, having had many a dakka conversation, swapping with him twice on the Great Marine Swap thread, and watching his homebrew fluff grow, I've wanted to do the same. I've already started fluff writing for my own GMS marines, but I reached a problem. I play Crimson Fists, and though they would fit into my stories quite well, I don't want to be taking liberties with well established chapters (for those who have read my fluff, the marines are leaving the care of the BA asap).

So, to fix my problem, I've decided to make a small (and possibly build it larger) force of a homebrew chapter. I'm doing a test paint scheme on the first marine within the week. But first, what everyone likes to see, the first models of the chapter, sans paint. Two stern guard, to be precise. The chapter will have all marines heavily kitted out, and armed to the teeth. These ain't your shiny clean marines, these are gritty, grimy war machines. (sorry for pic quality, they are from my phone)

All C&C is welcomed for them.

The chapter is going to be particularly war-torn, as well as wh40k-realistic, which is why all marines will be modeled with knives and ammo pouches, and holsters if they have pistols. I might have a scout presence to show their recruiting, but I might not. Robes may or may not make it in, as I will be using the DA models of Dark Vengeance in this force.

I have just enough robed bodies to make a chapter master's bodyguard, and I may or may not make them based off the Empty Seven. (props for those who know)

Thanks for looking!

Edit 2&3: revamp, paint scheme test marine coming soon! New pics will be taken with an actual camera

Nice work so far BBL gonna look really good with paint on them, any other conversion ideas etc you are planning? I like the idea of robed body guard, I reckon that'll look brilliant. I have some spare robed bodies if you want them?

any time frame for the marines to be painted? can't wait to see them :-)

Hopefully by tomorrow or the next day actually for painting

I have a ton of more conversion ideas kicking around, I just want to get a color scheme set for the marines, as the 'look' of some of them may change to fit the theme, but as a teaser, the next one is going to have a lot of bionics

So, I'm a bit stuck on paint scheme. I have three I like, and figured I'd ask for input

scheme one:

(other knee is red, forgot to pick a silver for the aquilla)

scheme two:

scheme three:

What do you guys think?

Thanks!

I actually think scheme 2 is the best choice, good contrasting colours and lots of potential for tying them throughout other troops and vehicles, plus it's something a bit different than you ususally see around! only suggestion would be to make the aquila on the chest white with the armour bone, clean and mean bro! clean and mean.

I'll do a mock up with a white aquilla vs a silver aquilla once I have a model with one to paint ready

And for reference, if I do scheme 2, the shoulder pads are going to be extremely dark blue, with bright highlights like how I do my crimson fists. The purple may be pretty dark as well.

I look forward to seeing your progress with them :-) and dark blue is fine with me (as if that matters) lol! I reckon they'll look even better in reality, also I have another little bag of pouches to send you, nothing too crazy mind, just something different for you to use :-)

That sounds awesome, thank you

I really like the red bone black scheme, but those colors are very popular, which is making me lean toward the purple as well. I think the only way to decide is to do a mock up of both and see which looks better in person

Best way to go imo, and that was my reasoning as well about the red/bone/black it does look good, but too similar to others, reminds me of the old white panthers chapter :-)

I had to look them up, but they look pretty cool

I just want a scheme that can look extremely war-torn, but also look striking and semi-unique

So, despite the fact I am 90% done with the test model for paint scheme one, I am scrapping all three. I decided if I'm doing a custom chapter, I want to have as little paint scheme borrowing as possible, and a more 'original' (aka, I came up with it) scheme. So, I'm reworking the paint scheme of the custom chapter I made the most models of when I first tried to make one.

The Sons of Ouroboros is the name, and the new scheme will be as follows. (when I have more time an army painter will be posted)

Dark silver armor, white shoulderpads (heavy chipping/battle damaged), white or deep green helmets, possibly deep green hands, deep green tabards/robes/cloth that isnt bone, and the rest will come as I paint the test model.

Old scheme was bright silver armor, blue pads with gold trim.

Chapter symbol will be a stylized ouroboros, and I'm thinking an Aztec feel, (mainly Quetzalcoatl) Also, this works well for the DA model's that have feathers. The feathered serpent, etc. Lots of scales and snake iconography, as well as wings and feathers.

Fluff will be incoming, let me know what you guys think about the new scheme idea

(and any lurkers, you can post, I won't bite )

Space Marine painter example one

Yay or Nay to green hands?

Oh wow, very nice BBL! I really love this scheme when you consider your fluff behind it and the Aztec feel, very clever by you :-) I say yes to the green hands too, ties together nicely, so what's the chapter badge going to be again? any pictoral references?

Something like this:

potentially with a wing/wings like this, to fit with the Aztec/winged serpent

potentially with something inside the 'circle', like this

Hmmm very interesting and a great base for a chapter badge! i'd keep it simple if it's going to be used on all your troops and vehicles/banners etc.? I like the second one with wings but i'd keep the centre empty so it stands out more as an Aztec serpent! perhaps to represent the scales you could either use little triangles? or just small dashes could work? what had you in mind?

I was thinking of using semicircle-ish things like this

and doing a more detailed head. I might just have wings on the symbol on banners and terminators, because more space to paint them

I dunno dude, honest I think for a chapter badge the kiss method is best :-) Keep It Simple Stupid! I think the more detailed it is the more it loses the Aztec feel, and if that's what you are going for i'd try and get it quite accurate to their designs? of course I may be completely wrong, i think we need to see an example painted up first and then we can pinpoint what's going to bring your boys to life ;-)

While not exactly simple, I could go full Aztec with it

EDIT: though, I suppose a simplified version with aztec colors could work well

I was thinking making teal and gold? or black and gold or something. But luckily, I have both burnished and shining gold still

Thanks for the advice, I'm about to start the test model

TEAL AND GOLD IS SO MAINSTREAM FOR AZTECS
-Hipster

I'd go for some more contrasting colours, like black and white :3

Well, the pads are white, so I could do black, gold, and some other color

i dunno teal and gold sound mighty good you could always do red and copper/brones if you want that would be aztecy (i know its not a word but it describes the point)

I'd be careful with the symbol because it's very similar to the thousand sons.

I'd add wings and make sure the style of the dragon is different.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

hmm is there other iconic symbols you might consider?

well, I could do it like how I used to, and have the snake be looping into an infinity sign with the tail and head being the left most part

also, I like this thing too. I wrote all tac marines would have it on their right pad

I could do the infinity snake, with the wing on it and in aztec colors/head

problem with the snake eating its tail is that is the symbol for the iron snakes of ithcatha *nods*

not a bad read either
