So as is my habit after big reveal shows, let’s do a rundown and see how it will effect life here in my little corner of the hobby. (TL;DR, not much)

Votan - Look cool. Not that familiar with how the army plays, so don’t know if vital roles are being filled. But the minis look nice. Nothing there is making me want to start a new army, or even pick up a CP for a change of pace.

Tomb Kings - Not a fan of their aesthetics; there is a reason I went with Vampire Counts in the great schism. Nice modern plastic HQs for those who do though.

FEC - army book and new mini drop. Again, not my preferred flavor of undead. Facloner is fun looking, and fits with the army. Don’t need to branch out, I’ve already got one and a half Death armies.

Nighthaunt - Speaking of which... The new poisoner character not doing anything for me. But the new spearhead, perhaps? I have a little over 1,500 points right now. New spearhead adds about 750. Which would let me put down a 2k list. Only thing I already have is the spirit torment, as I have the old one from the soul wars box. Once I burn through all the soulblight, it might be nice to change back to the spooks for a side project. Not a huge fan of getting another army book, but I might just play the speathead, or use New Recruit, although not a fan of online listbilders as a rules source.

Chaos Dwarves - Well, they hit AoS, and embraced it. That kind of “turn the dial to 11” kind of over the top crazy that works with the setting. Although I’m also getting some Warcraft vibes from them, not sure why. Not my cup of tea, but I know a lot of people have been waiting for them.

Underworlds stuff - Not a game I play. I like the chaos dwarves here better then the main range, but still pretty meh. Centaurs are sweet looking though. None of the warbands grab me enough to get into a new game. Not a fan of the units in the Death box for AoS use.

LI - Loads of tiny tanks. Glad they came out with a rules complilation. Not a fan of how things have been scattered. My eyes are not good enough for this scale, tempting as it is.

30k - Not getting more stuff for 3rd edition at this point. Still have a chunk of the 2nd ed box to work on. Mk 2 assault marines look suitably brutal. If I get back on track they might work for my assault element. but we’ll see what the state of the game is at that point, as it might be long enough we are talking about 4th ed 30k.

BL doing the scouring? This is my shocked face. How many dozen books they going to squeeze this for? Pass.

SM - Can’t have a preview show without marines. 5 special characters from the non big 4 chapters. Good. All of them look pretty nice. Weakest is probably the IH. Not my chapters, so pass from me. I can hear the DA players screaming already about the jetbike... Could I use any of the CPs?
Salamander - chapter specific HQ, mario cart, more flammers/foot assaults I already have too many of? Nope. Only thing I want here is the MM guy, as the ETB squad I have didn’t come with one.
Imp Fist - Command squad? Kinda want for my 1st co project. More terminators? would bring me to 3x5 squads of the new scale, not unreasonable. 5 each both reg and heavy intercessors? Actually need for my company. Maybe. I “need” like a third of this, and kinda want another 3rd. So might make sense to buy.
RG - I want a primaris JP captain and another 5 JP troops. Don’t really like the scout walker, and don’t need more phobos until I decide to bump the 10th up to full strength, Pass, as I only want like a third of the box.
IH - Static defenses don’t belong in my marine lists. I could use the HIs, but not sure I need 10. already have the techmarine. nope.
WS - Named chapter locked HQ, and more stuff I have plenty of. Pass.

I have all the units to field the Imp Fist one, which might be fun to do. Mix up the CPs I can put on the table. The others are either chapter loccked with named characters, or have units I dislike. or both.

So we may see me pick up the fist CP. Which amusingly would be all duplicates to stuff I have. No rush. Might be a next year thing if I can push to finish the battle company.

Helmet is goofy. If you want to cosplay, you are going to need far more then that. And for sitting on a shelf looking cool? You can do better for the money.

KT - Deathwatch, looks like the old kill team crossed the rubicon. Will be interesting to see the 40k rules. I’m not necon adverse, as they are probably my next 40k side project after I finish with my nids. Not that the KT is wowing me. And I don’t need a full board of terrain. Keeping an eye on this, but probably a pass. Not against getting into KT, but I spend enough trying to keep up on rules.

So overall a lot of neat things, just not really for me. Might pick up a spearhead of CP, but the timing on those is probably not until I get some of my current projects off the bench.

Blood Knight getting there. Need to clean up the white, then balck wash the horse, more cleanup, etc. But almost done with the basecoat.

Getting the first reds down on the barrow knights. So much fiddly detail on those guys.

I have an empty paint handle. I should put something on it. But need to get those knights done.

I’m torn.

The nice flat sculpted banners are a lot easier.
Blank banners you can do simple freehand to your skill level, or use decals. Or both
But flowing sculpted banners? Buckle up buttercup, and hope your brush skills are up to par.

Spoiler alert: mine are not really.

Going to dunk it in nuln oil to hide the worst of my sins.

Blood Knights are ready to ride to battle:

Which wraps up the spearhead:

And the Wight King I did was the last bit for the other one:

And together:

Which is 1,150 points out of my 2k goal. Of course, that’s not counting the other characters I already have done. Making good progress.

So this morning I moved one of the Dire Wolves to the empty handle. Put the base Grey Seer down. I should probably collect my thoughts on their scheme.

Base grey seer.
Black Templar contrast on anything that’s not bones, teeth, entrails, eyes.
Clean up as needed.
BA Red contrast alone the edges of skin, scars, shallow wounds, guts, tongues. Little in the insides of ears.
Clean up bone, teeth w/ grey seer
Black on claws
Nuln oil the whole model.
BftBG on tounge, guts.
Ardcoat to gloss the claws
BA red on eyes. Might need to grey seer them again if the nuln oil darkens them too much.

Thinking of getting a pot of gloss ‘ardcoat to do the claws shiny. Make them pop a little more. Would also go back and do the same to vargheists etc.

Alpha wolf will get some grey around his muzzle.

The reveals were great. I always get quite hyped for it. The Chaos Dwarves are my favourite from the released stuff. The models are awesome, and would make for a great "Infernal Dwarf" army in The Ninth Age. The Imperial Fists stuff just makes me a bit nostalgic. I saw it and briefly considered reviving my IF army... I'll park that idea for a rainy day. And of course KT, the Deathwatch look great. I suspect that they will be a very strong team and be at the top of the meta.

Nevelon wrote:Grumble grumble sculpted flappy banners full of detail… harumph.

As much as you say you don't like it, it does looks great... Would you have left the banner blank if there was no design on it?

It's really good to see your army coming together. It feels like a high model count army, if the number of models you have there is about half of the points value of the army.

You could always just grab an Imperial Fist or 2 as a painting project. Maybe a Combat Patrol. You need to intentionally start the army back up, you could just stumble into it accidentally...

Good question on the banner. Left blank, it’s too much space. I might have sifted through my collection of transfers hoping to find something. Maybe a Saim-Hann serpent? It would probably get a base red paint job and I’d say I’d get back to it, but never would.

Skeletons tend to make an army feel horde like. They are 10 points each. Could be worse, zombies are 140 points for 20. I think my end goal is going to be something like 60 models. So that’s like 3/4ths of it on the table now. In prior editions of AoS you were strongly encouraged to field large blocks of skellies. Like units of 30-40. Less of that these days.

So pretty much as planned. Little more sloppy with the red. These are deadwalkers, the zombie keyword. So the bones are not the dry, clean of the deathrattle. Still some bloodstains. And less fussy to do. I was worried the wash would cover the scars, but they are fine. Did put a little more red on the eyes post wash. Did not gloss them. Only the vampires have been getting blood-glossed eyes.

Who's a good zombie dog!

The black came out well. I'm wondering if some of those florescent paints might work for glowing eyes?
I used some for neon signs a while back from Army Painter that were not too over the top color wise.

Part of me considered putting white down before the red on the eyes to make rhem brighter. Right now they get the same treatment as all the non-vampire undead. Which is a little dull. But consistent with the army.

That's a pretty cool look for the wolf. I like the treatment of the black, and the details are enough to keep it interesting.

So, this is happening.

I was not feeling the khone guy I had picked out for this month’s “weathering” challenge. So time to dust off some killbots and paint the necron side of the Indominus box. There is a high chance I can get a second set to double up, but will start with this. Probably will grab a Doomstalker so I can field the Combat Patrol, but will wait till I get mostly done with the rest. Need to clean out the primed pile of other projects before adding more minis to this one.

Unlike other armies, this is going to be more focused. Like build to a 2k list and stop. Silver tide of warriors, backed up by tripods walkers, with some murderbots as swift flankers.

The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

So I quickly built the mini of the month, although I gave him a DW shoulder pad. Going to try to get him done in a week for the store comp. Also going to try to weather him for ours.

Going to go with the classic silver and green look for the necrons. Not set yet on how to base them. The lazy part of me says the same green scheme I use for the undead and eldar. partially as they would be the foil for the pointy eared gits. Like the Ultras and Nids on snow, the Eldar could be facing off agaisnt their ancient foe.

But I also need to figure out what to do with all the hoses and wires and everything on the killbots.

Edit: forgot to mention. I did make it down to the FLGS and tried to get a game in, but do to the late start and my opponent not being 100%. On the spearhead rules, only got like a turn and a half in. But an attempt was made. Been not good about making it down to the FLGS, and life has been lifeing pretty hard around here.

Not sure if it shows enough in the pic under the harsh lights, but one of the things I picked up Sunday was a pot of ‘ardcoat for a gloss finish. Thinking of doing all the black claws with it. Would be the vargheists, bloodborne, and the rest of the wolves.

I am enjoying the trip down memory lane raising them from the grave. Lots of fun minis in the range.

So this wrapped up quick:

The FLGS does a painting comp for the free mini of the month. Ends one week after it drops, so speed painting for me. Got him done, with some experiments in weathering to match this month’s comp. Not 100% happy with it, but done. And that’s halftime.

Normally when my comp entries are monochrome, it’s Ultramarine blue. Still, not bad assortment. The 3 marine entries are all different schemes. Volume is not bad, especially when you consider April is a selection of a much larger collection of minis.

I also need to be better about color checking my final pics. 3 months had errors.

So paint progress:
Decided to push one knight to finish, instead of working them all as a batch. Almost there for him. Need a quick clean up on the red (and a brown patch) then his wash. Once I have 2 handles free I’m going to start working the wolves across them in earnest. I’d rather do them in pairs then singles.

The deathwatch looks good, I like the green eyes!
It’s an impressive 6 month look back at the miniatures, plenty of variety and painting scheme!
I like the finish on the wolves they look sleek!

So what made you jump to Necrons, clearing the backlog or just wanting a change?

The Marine Standing Behind Marneus Calgar

My Tyranids are winding down. I’ve got like a score of gaunts left to paint, and the nerotyrant. But that’s it. The only units I really want to get to round out the collection is a unit of zoenthropes. If I was playing them more aggressively, maybe one or two more. But those would mostly be for rules interactions, not desire. Like now that characters join units, a set of hive guard might be nice to have. Honestly, I could probably bang the rest of them out in a month. So where to go next?

I do have the Eldar. They are my first secondary army, and I have a few units I want to paint and buy for them. And I will slowly add them. But that would require more room in the budget. I should focus on painting what I have first.

I could build more 30k stuff. I’ve got a bunch of marines, some more terminators. But just building more legion squads is not particularly exciting. Especcially as I have no interest in investing in the new 3rd edition.

I’ve had the Necron side of the Indominus box collecting dust for a bit now. 5 years? When did it come out? Something like that. I could easily get my hands on another set, as my son also got that box, and not only no longer plays 40k, but never played necrons. He’s been slowly re-gifing me stuff for a bit now, so I could wait, or just offer him a fair deal.

So some of it is clearing the backlog. But also planning for future project. Since I got the indominus box, army ideas have been percolating around the back of my mind. I dislike most of the vehicles, but like the tripod walkers, and the foot troops. So the idea of a silver tide, backed up by walkers sounds like fun. And should be reasonably balanced on the table. Splash in some wraiths a/o destroyers for some fast moving flanker melee units. Core of big blocks of buffed warriors.

From a painting POV, they should go pretty quick Leadbelcher and Nuln Oil is like 85% of the army. Couple wires, sokme tubes, green glowie stuff as needed. So they will also fill the role that the Nids did; a quick shot of feel-goods for finishing models.

Since they got edged out as this month’s entry, it might be a bit before they start getting paint. They will be my primary build project until the box is done, hopefully before priming season closes for the year. While I’d like to wrap up the nids before getting into them, a unit or two might jump the gun. No later then February. We’re going to do “finish it february” again as a fixed month, as that seemed popular, and if I’m not done by then, I’ll wrap up the whole lot of them at that time.

--

Built 3 more warriors this morning, and put the wash down on a knight. started the touch up on another. Plugging along. Also got a Spearhead game in today, victory vs. khrone dogpack.

Necrons, eh? Those will make a different thing for you to paint besides endless bugs and power armor (and space elves). And they kind of fit with your AoS stuff in that you play the undead factions (Soulblight Gravelords, Nighthaunt), and Necrons are basically space undead (honestly, having played Tomb Kings in Old World has shown me just how much Necrons are basically Tomb Kings in space!).

Sad to hear final confirmation from you that your son no longer wants to play Warhammer. Always a shame to lose a fellow hobbyist. But on the plus side, you'll get more hobby stuff.

Nice to hear you're still getting in some games. It's nice to actually get to PLAY with our toys after we paint them, eh?

I’ve generally been more of a VC then TK undead player. More elite hammers with a little chaff to clog up the battlefield. Ironically, my thoughts for necrons are more classic hordes of shamblers, with a few characters shepherded them. Will be interesting to see how that works.

I honestly would not have tried to drag The Boy into 40k. It’s got a pretty steep entry curve. But his uncle gave him some stuff, and it was something we could do together after the divorce. Who knows, he might get back in someday. Having me be his only opponent was not the best.

It is real nice to get games in. Helps me motivate to paint.

Speaking of which…

As the barrow knights get done, the wolves take their place. 2 of the pups needs their claws blacked up, then nuln oiled. One needs his reds. The knights need a lot of touch ups, then their wash. I’ve been distracted, but need to get back to them.

Dogs should just need to have their bases done. Might red up the eyes a little bit more.

Musician had his last major clean up. Few spots I noticed I missed, then he gets his final wash.

Edit 8/15:
Musician got his wash. dogs got the red touch up on the eyes, green on their bases, and are off the handles. They will need their rims blacked, anf I should rock/tuft and flock the 6 guys I not have waiting.

3 more pups down and waiting.

Overlord is built, royal warden clipped.

Thanks. Holding off on more army pics till the end of the month. Want to get the wolves and the last knight done for that.

Speaking of...

Wolves are ready for their Nuln Oil. Knight still untouched for his final steps. Need to get on that.

Built the Skokpekth lord, clipped the first of his squad. Having flashbacks to the tyranid pushfits. The marines never bugged me, as they were solid and blocky. But the necrons (and the nids) need to to put a lot of pressure to get bits snug, and don’t have good angles/places to apply it. So to get that head on, you need to try not to snap the thin wires on the neck. Or bend the whole bit back. Had this come up on a few models. Just need to be careful. Or sand things down a little.

Edit:
Washed the dogs. Next they need some BftBG and their toes done. I also went back and glossed the varghiests claws.

So the last batch of pups is off waiting to be based, last 2 down. Decided to bring down the last 2 KT marines to get some paint. Finish off that squad, help the company goal. And I actually went and put some touch up red on the barrow knight.

Finished building choppy robot number 2, clipped the 3rd. Only their plasma buddy and 10 more warriors left to build for now.

Dogs washed. Next is the glosses and any needed touch ups.

Marines getting more basecoats.

Knight got 2 cleanups, need to do a few more.

Building is onto the last 10 necron warriors. 2 done. Looked at the CP rules, and 5 of them need the alt gun. Will do the bottom half of the squad with them. From a game mechanic POV, I’m not sure it’s worth giving up 12” of range for a point of AP. Especially for a footslogging squad not know for their speed. Might be worth it to have one squad in a full army that I plan to use movement tricks with, but that would be like the tertiary one. My core army concept is mostly blocks of warriors just silver tiding their way slow and steady up the table, with a few support units around the edges a/o embedded in the troops.

Hope everyone’s weekend is off to a good start.
