Hey guys, we have recently decided that we are going to play a few games with stuff that we can custom build, I have a flier that I would like to show you guys and I would like some recommendations as to whether it is OP and what I should do to tone them down. Have I got the points cost right?

First up, the Mako

MAKO - 180

Armour: 12\12\10
BS 4
3 HP

Type: Flyer

Weapons: The Mako is the Taus close support Air to Air craft. It Mounts a Nose Mounted Railgun (S10 AP1, Skyfire) and 2x Drone Controlled Interceptor Turrets. The Mako also holds 6 Seeker Missiles.

Turrets: The Mako has 2 Drone Controlled Interceptor Turrets that are both armed with Twin-linked Ion Rifle. The Drone Controlled Interceptor Turrets have the Skyfire and Interceptor Special Rule

Special Rules:

- Dog Fight Any Mako ALWAYS shoots at Air targets at full BS regardless of any other rules that may prohibit this from happening.
- Electro-Magnetic Meltdown Any Unit that Fires at the Mako from within 18" Inches, their Weapons gain the Gets-Hot Special Rule. This ability can only be used once per game.

What do you think?

Did you get rolled by a heavy flier list this weekend?

Your basic Arachnid warrior isn't too smart, but you can blow off a limb, and it's still 86 percent combat effective. Here's a tip: Aim for the nerve stem, and put it down for good.

I think the Tau already got some flyers in the new codex didn't they?

Nice, you made an airbourne version of a riptide mixed with a shark and a skyray, for a fraction of the cost + some more rules to help it.
Why soo many weapons?
Thats enough to make an ork cry in respect.

Yes, but they suck most of the time. Or just waste the precious Fast Attack slot from the Pathfinders.

OP:
It sounds okay, but you should drop its BS to 3, and its armour to 10/10/10 to be in line with the other Tau fliers. Also, the Dog Fighter special rule is redundant and the Electro-Magnetic Meltdown is kinda' weird. Add a networked markerlight instead and lower the cost to 150-160 points.

My armies:
14000 points

So it is basically A Hammerhead With wings. Guess its in the Shark family I suppose.

Maybe make its STR 10 AP1 rail gun Rapid fire as well. With stealth and Shrouded.

As said, Have you met a couple of Helldrakes in recent battles. Or a deathray by any chance.

haha these are all good suggestions and I am thinking of dropping the AV to 11\11\10 so as to stay more Tau like but I think that making the Railgun rapid Fire is completely against the fluff as the Railgun is supposed to be a single shot of sheer power. and for the dog fighter special rule... 'If a Player chooses to evade his Mako then he must roll a D6, that roll is then equal to the Jink Save that he will receive. If a 1 is rolled you must re-roll the result until you get a value of between 2-6. For example I choose to evade with the Mako and roll a 3 on the D6, I then have a 3+ Jink Save... What do you think?

Have you considered some Tau vehicle upgrades like possibly a sarcasm detector?

Add an atomic bomb shell to the railgun, and make it Assault 36.

Then it would be perfect.

... or, you could just use a FW flier. since they generally don't suck.

A close support flyer wouldn't be using no rail guns.

if anything it should have the Big burst cannons from the riptide. like a warthog. full of missiles and marker light turrets.

or make it a helio type air vehicle and give it vector dancer and alot of missile pods and burst cannons.

would be cool

A Heli type would probably have the Hover rule as well

GeƱerally the reason why the players don't get to make the rules. Seems a bit like overkill if its as powerful as a Riptide for a cheaper price...

+1

Also, I think that AV12 on a flier is a terrible idea. I've yet to see one that wasn't game breakingly OP

Tau Skyfire, it seems like you want a Tiger Shark or Tiger Shark A-1-0 for 1/4th of the cost. Honestly, the only awesome thing to do would be use the Barracuda ASF and give it the option for the Heavy Burst Cannon (without the option for the Nova-charge) and add in a Networked Markerlight.

The Barracuda has the following options:
- replace Ion Cannon with Heavy Burst Cannon for +10 points
- replace the twin-linked missile pod with a High-Yield Missile Pod for +10 points
- replace the two Burst Cannons with two Smart Missile Systems for +10 points
- Add a Networked Markerlight for +10 points

Since no one would ever take the Seeker Missiles, taking all of these instead of them makes the Barracuda even more awesome.

At the edge of Oblivion looking out.

It sounds like a Barracuda with a ton of seeker missiles. Id suggest looking at the Barracuda. They seem to look effective, specialy vs the Tau's "Fliers" which seem eh at best.
and you have to do AV 10/10/10 anything higher is OP, even the Tiger Shark in FW (which most people think their OP) has 10/10/10 and it would devastate a lot of things.

12/10/10, actually. But note that the Tigershark is a 700 point superheavy flyer, not a standard unit.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Yeah, their still cool looking, but besides an apoc game not sure if its worth it most any other game. Don't have 300$ to get one hah

Yes and their technical description is: Total crap.

That said this doesn't seem much better...a dedicated air to air fighter that takes up a pathfinder slot in an army that can field 9 anti air guns with 2+ armor if it wants to seems redundant...
