hi gang,

looking at the landraider, it's always struck me as rather stupid that the side hatches are mounted right in front of the sponson weapons. your assault troops either risk getting shot on the way out the door or foul line of sight for the landraider's weapons as they charge out. either way, suboptimal and something you'd think space marines would be a bit more clever about.

with that in mind, if I were to assemble the raider such that the weapon sponsors were in the front-most doorways and the side hatches were in the rear-most, would I run into modeling for advantage issues? I don't think it changes the firing arc in any appreciable way, but it would move the guns forward a couple inches, so a case could be made over weapon range shenanigans. would this be a problem in a typical tournament setting?

no.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Most folks do this, especially for the crusader and redeemer models. Plus it looks better.

I've never understood why anyone would put the exits in front of the guns to begin with, yet it appears to be very common.

(with apologies to the guy whose image I googled)

You'd have to swivel the lasguns just to open the doors!

That being said, the box art for the Land Raiders I own (attached, not sure if it's still current) shows a pretty good argument that putting them forward is not MFA.

In a combat situation, they would generally be using the assault ramp anyway. I've always assumed the side doors are just there for convenience, rather than for quick egress.

Aesthetically I like the LCs in the back, but the hurricanes and flamers up front. I think having the godhammers forward makes it a little front heavy.

In earlier editions, the instructions said you could use either, so if anyone give you flack, just ignore them.

Here is a pic from WD 245 where they introduce the new kit:

So the Land Raider has been around since the begining of the game, right? I'm sure that if it mattered GW would have chimed in with the answer by now. Although really they have, as artwork clearly shows both positions used at one time or another.

The Land Raider has existed in the game since Rogue Trader. The current model though has only been around since 3rd edition.

And GW did 'chime in with an answer'... the original building instructions had it as optional.

To be fair, the mark one land raider had the LCs fixed in only the front position, no options. While my old LR took a melta hit on the back shelf of my car on a summer day, you can see that the LCs should be mounted front.
