That is some mighty fine work. It's a shame that it's graffiti and not a piece of legitimate art. I know some folks who would pay nicely for murals of that quality.

Here at Kandahar Airfield, on some of the concrete barriers scattered around the base you will find the Imperial Aquila spray painted. I'll try to nab a picture of it next time I see it.

It can be art. Just not legitimate art. 'Legitimate' requires, at least in my mind, that you aren't committing a crime, and graffiti is destruction of property by definition.

Not when it's part of a competition, showcase, exhibition, etc. Graffiti has, in more recent days, started to take on a form of "modern art" that's both recognized and legitimate. I know a professional artist who makes a living off graffiti spray-paintings.

We had some 40K themed "nose art" on some of our birds for awhile but I'm not sure if I have pictures. We also had some pretty extensive "custom paint" on our hooches at a more remote location. Probably 20% of my maintainers at that location played 40K. I know that, unfortunately, I don't have any pictures from there.
I wouldn't be surprised if some of the guys responsible for all of the above are members on this site.

I'm pretty sure that graffiti is underhanded by definition. Like this one. I think when someone is okay with you doing it, it's only faux graffiti. Graffiti-lite, if you will. Or you just call it a fancy mural.

So if I own the wall in question, it's legitimate art, if not then it's just graffiti?

it is a game of semantics you are playing, Jimsolo, but the first definition to pop up on Google says "in a public place"...
there is no mention of legality, or destruction of property, which would be vandalism...
you are of course right, in the sense that "real" graffiti was always about hitting trains, and was not condoned...
trains were more popular than walls because the train rolled all over the city, showing of an artist work to tons of people, or even better, rolling through a rival artist's 'hood...
cities around the world have spent millions painting over graffiti, and it is still highly illegal in some places...
not to mention, shoplifting was the usual way that inner city kids got their spraypaint, which is why many stores now lock up their cans...
in Southern California, there are a lot of "sanctioned" graffiti pieces on walls in parks and underpasses...
maybe these should be called murals, but murals are traditionally painted by brush...
semantics again...
the meaning of words evolve, just as art does...
graffiti has grown as a legitimate artform over the last twenty years, but the general public's perception of the word hasn't...
"graffiti-lite" sounds weak...
i would call a sprayed piece on a privately owned wall, or even a sheet of plywood, "graffiti style"...
cheers

Many cities have specific places where graffitti is actually allowed, So art can be teached to younger generations.
And if you tag that graffitti, well they will never find your body.

That is some Awsome art.
While i dont agree with some graffiti like Tagging, Most of the people doing it have real talent, and i like their style and so forth. I just dont agree with doing it on city property, when really they should be in a gallery with other artistic works.

There's a great on on a bird here in Bagram, but you can't take pictures on the airfield.

Yea, I have seen a lot of units using some variation of the Chaos 8 point star on team shirts or patches. I recall seeing it on a truck previously, but I don't remember where.

A shame they aren't using that skill to teach them English, instead. More gooderer English than "teached" anyway.
Yes, I am most definitely taking the piss with that remark.

Military bases are like small cities, so gamers are inevitably going to be there. It isn't common to see "graffiti" on normal posts(like CONUS, and OCONUS posts such as Korea etc). In country is a whole 'nother deal. I can relatively freely spray paint crap on T-barriers without repercussion. It only takes a small group of dudes(in this case 40K gamers) to say "hey lets take this stencil and spray paint it everywhere". There is graffiti all over the place on KAF and BAF that people have put up, this is just a 40K gamer doing it. Thats all.

Ahhh, okay. I just got the impression that such postings attracted large numbers of 40k players for whatever reason.
