Yes, but remember that majority toughness applies, so you'll reduce the DLord T to 3. Also, if the scarabs get hit with a template that doesn't instant death them, they will multiply wounds real fast.
I was thinking about doing it, but it just seemed too risky.

My test games with Necrons were Spyder armies primarily and they were...awesome.
Killing that many monsters to ignore the swarms or try to kill the swarms and let the monstyers come? All the while the troops sneaking around the battlefield periphery to take positions.
I loved it. I needed a LOT of poker chips to proxy that army though. Lol.

I love the flexibility too, these are great fun to play . But, I find that Zandrekh works better with them than a destro lord.

Zandrekh, yes, definitely. He is the best character in the codex anyways, in my opinion.

For the wounds and attacks yo uget they'd be worth it at +10 pts. At their normal cost they are well worth it.

The key thing with Zandrekh is the ability to give and take away special rules. So the ones I normally work with (to give) are Stealth, Furious Charge, Counter-Attack, Tank Hunters. Example usage : Scarabs with furious charge (ie 5 S4 attacks on the charge) Wraiths with furious charge and/or counter attack. A blob of warriors with counter-attack etc etc. And the take away option is even more fun. Take away furious charge, counter attack, night vision (lots of armies hate that one) and you can take away hit and run.
On top of that, you get SW, PS, Orb (ie tanking unit from hell) - all for 185 points.

You can get all the same equipment from a regular OL for 5pts cheaper. His special abilities are not very game changing IMO now a days, considering stealth is the most useful and allot of competitive units/builds are ignoring cover. The other abilities aren't going to make or break most games. Whereas the destroyer lord can actually keep up with the scarabs and can rapidly redeploy where needed or is able to skip to a wraith unit if needed. The versatility of having two D. Lords able to join Wraiths or scarabs is a much better setup IMO, against all comers in a tournament setting. Automatically Appended Next Post:
25pt bases of scarabs, worth it? Really? You must be joking.

With the new Eldar Codex I see Scarab Swarms gaining a lot of traction. Waveserpents are amazing against shooting but something like Scarab Swarms will destroy them handily. I know these Swarms with Warrior spam is one thing I DO fear with my new (Y)Me(Loc)chdar lists.

With a scarab farm strategy, can a Spyder take a scarab squad beyond the 10 base max? The codex says it can take it beyond the starting size but what about the max unit size in general?

So, for 5 points, you don't think it is worth it to be able to give furious charge to scarabs, immortals or spyders (hell you could even give the wraiths furious charge). Or, to give said units counter-attack? Or give stealth? Or take away that extra point of S or 1 A from a unit you are assaulting? Or stop a unit from doing a hit and run so you can pin it down and kill it?
Fair enough, your call.
And I agree that wraiths with PE are much better and the destro lord is an excellent tanking unit. But at lower points, with only one unit of wraiths, I'll take Zandy every time (because he's 5 points LESS than a kitted DLord and the DLord doesn't have an invul save). Zandy provides army wide buffs and is particularly useful at increasing the effectiveness of scarabs (at S4 they do a lot more damage and can assault S7 MC). They are also wicked against terminators with S4.
One other thing, putting a DLord into scarabs doesn't seem like a great idea. For a start, your average T is now 3, and a non ID blast template will generate a huge number of wounds.. Course, it may play differently on the table - it would be great to hear how this worked for you as I've been toying with the concept for a while.

Absolutely! I had scarab swarms 37 strong before. Added 9 per round. Nom nom nom nom.
Zahndrek is awesome. He can GIVe Furious charge to the scarabs and then take the counterattack away from Space wolves. They can can take Furious charge away from Blood Angels and give the Scarabs counterattack for the impending charge. and the list goes on.
Very nice.

A single scarab model also have 4 or 5 base attacks, they can also bog down infantry, perhaps even win a few melee just by the fact they roll more dice than you.
Sure, horrible low stats, but still way more dice that most other units, even dedicated melee ones.

Na they generally may tie up a unit for a turn.
If they take on a squad with any S6 attacks they just die...
Something with S5 or below they can tar pit for a couple of turns... but eh..
