Its not religion, its culture you imperialist running capitalist dog!
Its their culture. You saying their culture is wrong in this area is cultural imperialism you imperialist you.

You know calling a Brit an Imperialist, even in jest, seems more like a complement than an insult.

Poor oppressed native: GO home you imperalist.
Brit tourist: (images of Brittania Rex flashes in his head); Thanks!

It's not culture, it's control. I sincerely doubt that the vast majority of the indonesian people gives a flying fart about there being women in bikinis or not. But more extremist and more vocal groups (emphasis on vocal) can use the religious card with a fair amount of impunity in order to impose their point of view to the larger society. The fascism analogy is really not that far off.

Nobody went there and told them what to do, quite the opposite. Someone told the organization that the evil bikinis woul put society upside down and the organization bended over like a tired old whore.

As a matter of fact my complexion is indeed in the pale pinkish side of the colour spectrum. Should I perchance be ashamed of it? Big'ol honky going back to the evil ways of the age of plunder (incidentally, it was we the portuguese who began said age)? So you're telling me that a beach tourism destination like Indonesia (and more specifically the hindu Bali) is a place where bikinis are a thing only imagined in the minds of foreign (and let's not forget white) devils? I do agree that beauty pageants are something that should be only remembered with embarassement. But here's the thing: I too have beliefs. Like the belief that this whole thing was just a way for certain political groups to show up as strong enough to make an international organization kow-tow to their whims. I also share a belief with a long deceased person:
"If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."
His name was George Washington.

Cheers!

Today's lesson in English Idioms: "Mighty white of you".

Originally used under colonialism and before civil rights, this phrase expressed appreciation for honorable or gracious behavior, under the assumption that white people were inherently more virtuous. Today, it is generally used sarcastically in reference to underwhelming acts of generosity.

Example

Lounge Lizard: I gave that homeless man my half eaten apple.
Frazzled: Wow, thats mighty white of you.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

And your desire to jump to racism without looking at the context of the situation doesn't seem to make you much better. If I had to guess he didn't think of how it would sound to someone unfamiliar with the idiom and you are jumping straight to racism without thinking it through.

My native language is Portuguese, and my english skills are more focused on brittish english.

So, you're saying that these hypotetical dialogues:

"Frazzled: I stuck it to the man!
Lounge Lizard: Wow! that was mighty black of you!"

or:

"Frazzled: I sure like my rice!
Lounge Lizard: Wow! that's mighty yellow of you!"

would be OK?
Because frankly I'm a bit confused here.

Which is why I put a definition up above. Idioms can be tricky, and sometimes it can be forgotten that not everyone shares the same phrases, even among people speaking the same language. "Mighty white of you" is a very American phrase that doesn't translate well outside the culture. And no, you can't just replace the ethnicity and get the same effect. It is a peculiar bit of sarcasm coming from a distinct time and place in American history. On such a mixed board where everyone is using English in some capacity it is easy to slip into our own colloquialisms and speech patterns. In and of itself there is nothing wrong with that, as it is how people talk. The trick is in realizing it afterward and explaining the issue, but it is also on the reader to recognize they may be misunderstanding something, and not jump to conclusions so easily about the poster either.

Also its much more fun to claim racism when you don't get something.

This is veering off-topic fast, so to sum it up:

1: I do not believe this is primarily a cultural issue. Some pressure groups used this as a way to promote their domestic political agenda. And guess what: it worked.
2: I do not believe that Frazzled is in any way a racist, but sometimes we should think a little more about what we say, and the whole white guilt trip thing is, in essence, a form of racism.
3: This horse is so dead not even the vultures will touch it.

That being said, cheers and peace out!

No the phrase was perfectly appropriate. Its a responsive statement to people making arguments that their culture is superior to others' culture and somehow should take precedence. "white man's burden" and all that.

Just because you think its fine, doesn't mean they should have to think its fine, especially in their own country. Since its a minior cultural thing harming no one, in contrast to whatever Miss World is supposed to be, I said with them.

And I say again: I sincerely doubt this was a cultural or religious issue. It was political. You're the one assuming that because Indonesia is a muslim majority country then this is obviously about culture and religion. Guess what: they have politicians as everyone else. That being said, that's my issue with this whole matter: it's not about culture, it's about control, and pressure groups doing their territorial pissings. And the pageant organization caved, when they should have simply packed up and left. And hopefully disappear into the Maelstrom.

How is it political?
Pressure groups can put on pressure. Thats ok, thats democracy. I didn't see anything in the article about government involvement.

After all, if they planned to put a homosexual hating moderator on and filmed the show in San Francisco, would it be wrong for San Franciscoans who don't think highly of that to express their opinion and put pressure on, that maybe thats not a good idea?

Since when does a government needs to be involved into something for it to be political? Pressure groups make pressure to pursuit certain agendas. Guess what: that's politics.
And which San Franciscans would put pressure? The vast majority who has better things to do than care about what the moderator did on who or PRESSURE GROUPS that pursuit a specific political agenda?
And, FYI, everything that is done in the public arena of a democratic society that has something to do with ideas, beliefs or budgetary choices IS politics. And guess what: this little discussion of ours is, in a way, politics too.

So I guess we're both horrible human beings.

Cheers dude!

Its not religion, its culture you imperialist running capitalist dog!
Its their culture. You saying their culture is wrong in this area is cultural imperialism you imperialist you.

You know calling a Brit an Imperialist, even in jest, seems more like a complement than an insult.
