A few of my friends and I have decided to start pre heresy armies, and I was wondering what would be a better look for the iron warriors mk2 or mk3 forgeworld armor? I was also thinking of using the phobos pattern bolters.

the mk2 is the "Crusade" pattern and the mk3 is the "Iron" pattern. I think the answer is clear
for bolters, I'm partial to the phobos pattern bolters. for what it's worth, though, FW bundles the umbra pattern with their bigger mk3 kits.

What did you use for the armor color btw? I assume something like a leadbelcher and nuln oil wash?

If it were me and I had the funds to spend on FW (and the skill to make their stuff actually look good), I would actually get the Boarding Team set. They're using a heavier version of the MK. III and, if you look carefully, one of the helmets in the GW upgrade set is actually the same one used in the boarding team set, only with added horns. In fact, it's that head on the guy pictured on the far right. Being that they're masters of siege warfare, I'd imagine they'd generally use heavier gear than standard.

I used leadbelcher and my own recipe black wash. 50:50 abaddon black and imperial primer, thinned down to the desired consistency.
I find The imperial primer helps with adhesion and shrinks more as it dries.
Also all the silver is dry brushed on in very thin coats with a light wash between each coat.
Final coat was shaded with seraphim sepia and highlighted with leadbelcher
