Has anyone been able to play this unit in any tournaments? How has it performed and how many would you suggest taking?

It is good, able to ignore cover and LOS
It needs Marker light support, but so does the rest of our army.
Very good anti air.

5000pts 6000pts 3000pts

I am using the Skyray Gunship in an allied detachment for my necrons with a riptide, cadre fireblade, and 12 firewarriors. So only 3 marker lights total. Is the Skyray still worth it?

Yeah, depending on the hole your're trying to fill, The Missilesides will punk a skyray.

Im really just trying to find a good tau detachment to compliment my wraithwing army to help with me with the following units/situations
* Paladins
* High AV Tanks in the backfield
* Tau Castle with multiple riptides
* Other wraithwing armies

All that sounds like what you're really looking for is lascannons, not Tau (for the first three anyway).

Just my personal opinion.

For paladins and high AV tanks, you may want to look at rail weapons. That AP1 hurts like hell.

That is why i wanted the riptide, considering a strength 8 AP2 large blast can tear them apart, not to mention it can be good against high AV tanks with the nova charge. People seem to think he is weak without marker light support which is why i added the skyray and cadre fireblade. Since ignoring cover seems to be the name of the game with tau and eldar, im just not sure a straight wraithwing army can cut it anymore.

Hammerhead with a railgun? With the hammerhead kit you get that and an ion and the skyray stuff so magnetize it and swap out what works for you and what doesn't

If your just trying to support a single riptide, you could go the Mark'o commander route of using marker drones off of himself and body guards. that is 6 bs 5 marker lights, which is more than enough to give a riptide non scattering pie plates.
that will leave your fast attack and heavy support open for other things.

I would be more happy If i was actually able to buy it. they don't even sell it anymore on the website. And you cant even purchase the turret from them in the bitz section.

Try looking for the hammerhead.
They redid the box art for the skyray kit - as it included ALL the hammerhead bits anyway.

Skyray STR 8 is good. Kills Paladins and tanks and 3 Markerlights might be all ya need. But a Riptide? Kind of odd. It will kill them though with Early Warning Systems engaged!

Pathfinders can take STR 8 blasts, but the AP won't help there. Piranhas though... Now they might be a great choice instead of the skyray? Over time, more shots.

Not really sure how S8 AP3 will kill paladins. The S8 will one shot them for sure, but it has to bypass the 2+ save first.

Still, you have only a finite number of missiles don't you? Not a very reliable anti-paladin measure. If I were a tau player, I'd rather target AV10-11 vehicles or T6 MCs who have a 3+ save or worse.

Skyray is probably going to be my "spray and pray anti- helldrake machine" if I ever end up needing one. Although a squad of missile broadsides would probably do it better.

The only issue that i see with this is the amount of points the Mark'o commander and drones take up. If i were to do that, i would have to lose a decent amount from my necron side which i feel is pretty solid. My full list is located at the link below and will probably be taken to a GT next weekend.

Looking at that list, i would go fire blade with minimum troops, at least 8 pathfinders, the riptide with a EWO at least, then take 2 broadsides of whatever flavor you like (i prefer rail but alot of people swear by missiles) or if you really wana hurt av14 take a railhead (longstrike always makes it better but he is pricy) should be 500-600 (700 or so with long strike)

You shouldn't have to worry about troops for scoring concidering your necrons, so you can focus more points into getting first blood and taking out transports.
