Subject: 1500pts New Eldar VS Tau (video batrep) REMATCH
Mission: Emperor's Will
Deployment: Hammer and Anvil
Night Fightning: Yes
If you caught our last battle report we posted here (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/531782.page) you'll know that sadly due to a minor emergency we had to cut the game short so this is the proper full length rematch of my new Tau army against the new Eldar rules. We both mixed up our lists a bit and keep in mind James (the Eldar player, Blighty on here) was less making a list to crush me and more making a list to test how things have changed and so on.
Thanks for supporting our videos so far also, Dakka has been kind and offered good tactical suggestions too. Just keep in mind we sometimes mix up our lists so we aren't always using the same things even if points for points it isn't efficient.
.....Er and, yeah, once again I forgot Blacksun Filters. I promise to remember one day.

I wouldn't give up on the Wraithknight and Harlequins yet, seemed like a fair bit of bad luck was involved with those 2. Not having first trun, no Veil of Tears, failed charge range, exactly enough wounds to kill it etc
Thanks for the report!

I agree with the above poster - I'd give the Wraithknight and Harlequins another chance. If the Wraithknight had assaulted the Riptide, he probably would have finished it off in the Tau's turn and so avoided a turn of being shot. If he doesn't have the invuln save (imo) he really needs to chill behind a building for cover. The nice thing about just taking the cannons though is they are assault weapons and can be brutal. As for the Harlequins... remembering their spell would have totally changed their effectiveness in my opinion. I think you actually had a really good list, just some bad luck - especially with the brutal Warp Spiders. I think your bad luck combined with some smart playing from the Tau player just made it go down hill too quickly.
I actually really like the Tau plane too. I saw the box of one at the store and thought it was kind of ugly, but seeing it in a game makes me appreciate it more. Can't wait to see your guys' armies painted, it's interesting to see them progress between videos.
Thanks for the report, I look forward to seeing more!

I find the eldar player is a bit more sporting than the tau player. The key point was that the Tau player "guessed" the wraithknight would not have his invul so he built his list with extra low ap shots... as well as the EWO for the expected warp spiders. These are friendly games right? Not tournament matches?
On the other hand I feel like the eldar player deployed a bit too much in the open at the start versus a long ranged shooty army. Losing so many bikes in the open was sad when they could have hidden and moved across the board on their turn.
If you play your eldar army again I'd love to see another attempt with the warp spiders as well as another wave serpent or two (though you may not own any more).
Anyway, thanks for the reports. I do enjoy them.

If anything I'm more sporting than he is!
Not sure if it came across accurately in the cut, but on my first turn I started moving stuff before activating my nova engines. I asked to just be allowed to do it - he said no and made me roll a dice to decide on whether I could after I protested. So naturally when it came to him forgetting to cast his power with the Harles I enforced the same deciding dice roll he made me use. Also after I easily wiped them out I offered to continue the game as if they had the power and didn't get shot at that turn since it was really painful losing 500pts in one turn but he decided against doing that since even with minimum spotting distance I'd still get a turn firing at them before they could assault.
The Wraithknight thing was personal! He killed one of my Riptides once so I was after revenge~
We are both fairly competitive people even though these are friendly games in our kitchens! I'm bringing regular vanilla marines to fight his Eldar this week so I'm sure I'll be the one licking wounds afterwards. Maybe it's just the armies we have available, but I am finding Tau to be like easy mode and think they might be a little OP.

I guess I was referring to the list tailoring more than the actual gameplay. In that sense the outcome may have been determined before it began.

Eldar player (James) here. Despite being close friends, we play a VERY competitive game. List tailoring happens regardless of any conscious intent. We know the models the other player owns and to a certain extent, is likely to field.
The best example I can give for this is for anti-flyer/anti-tank. We rarely run mech heavy lists so neither of us bring a large amount of anti-tank firepower. Until recently, neither of us owned a flyer so we brought no anti-air. As the size of our armies grow, this will become less of an issue - especially when our seconds and third armies are viable.

Then I rescind my comment about the Tau player being less sporting. Regardless, the point I was making was that there was some list tailoring on the Tau side where the Eldar side is still mixing things around to find out what works. Because of that, the Tau more easily won. That's not to say a TAC Tau versus a TAC Eldar are equally matched... that is still yet to be seen imo. I'm simply arguing that the circumstances were not great for really judging the value of 6E Eldar performance.

It was definitely an uphill struggle. I am still trying to figure out Tau with my playstyle (the videos probably highlight that fairly well).
The next video to go up is us playing each other but he swaps out Tau for Ultramarines. I am more familiar with his Ultramarines playstyle..

Ion riptides are your friend... AP 2 pie plates with markerlight support is pretty tasty.

I don't usually tailor my lists on any conscious level and try to keep them TAC. I was also just trying things out (I changed the list from last time I used it, switching out whole units and adding models I literally got the day before for my birthday). I wanted to try the broadside rail rifles since I never had before and the other set up with missiles means they need to be too close for comfort in my experience.
Both Riptides having ion accs was the only tailor and even then only to kill the Wraithknight to desuade trying to instant kill them in the future. I haven't been impressed with the heavy burst cannon overall and again proof of that is in previous videos where I've rolled with it on camera but I kept using it until I got one painted to tell them apart easier. Obviously the broadsides helped with that too using those rifles but I prefer them over high yield pods to the extent I may always use them regardless of opponent.
It is also worth pointing out that often I mess with my lists purely so I'm not using the exact same models every video since we don't have a lot of armies at hand at present.
EDIT: Whoops, forgot what I said about Warp Spiders in my guesses for what he'd field. It was more of a joke since if you go watch the other times I've fielded my new Tau I've always had at least one thing with EWO even though he's never brought anything that deep strikes.

If all the AP3 is going into the Wraithknight anyway I'd recommend starting the spiders on the board. They are fast enough, so you would have to choose what to bring down and suffer the other unit.

I'll have to defend the list tailoring too, as my group of friends do it all the time, as we are fairly competitive with each other, and have a lot of models (except me, who is re-booting my eldar from scratch, so I'm slightly less versatile)
Great battle report! Like the style of them a lot better, the summaries at the end of turns instead of the grueling process of following each dice roll are a lot better
Shame to see the Eldar defeated, but I look forward to the next one! Keep em up!

Again, I'm not mad at Flik for list tailoring (though i did call it less sporting). I'm simply stating that the Eldar had an uphill battle from the start. I'd actually love to see a rematch where BOTH players tailor their lists.
Flik wrote:I wanted to try the broadside rail rifles since I never had before and the other set up with missiles means they need to be too close for comfort in my experience.
I love the look of the railside, so I'm still hoping they are a better choice as well before I purchase and assemble my own.

I think I'd always take Ion over burst simply due to the high chances of rolling multiple get's hot with 12 dice...
Again, I apologize for the "less sporting" comment. I look forward to future batreps between the two of you.
