as the title says I'm trying to start a bitz selling business as my summer job. I've got some capital together to get some initial stock, I just need to know what kits and bitz are in high demand. I'm thinking the basic tactical marines are a good start, but what else? does anyone know what bitz would be a good place to start my little home business?

Do you know how to make a small fortune selling bits?
Start with a large fortune.
The market is fairly saturated as far as I can see, I don't think you're going to make much money on this venture.

Forgeworld bits are more sought after atleast where I am, everyone and their mother around here has enough tactical marine bits to be getting on with but a nice MK2 torso or umbra pattern bolters to make a model stand out is a nice piece. However Forgeworld bits are expensive to get, and you will still end up with some bits that wont sell.
In short, you wont make alot of money, its more of a service to the community than a buisness.

I know War Store is closing their bitz department because apparently GW doesn't like people selling bitz anymore. I miss the days where you could buy bitz directly from the GW store.

Nothing in this post inspires confidence in me that you understand what you're getting into, especially not for something you're going to do for just a couple months then stop. The long term bitsellers get buy in terms of volume, selling the stuff that people really want, and ending up sitting on a lot of things that just don't move.

The catch here is that the bits people wnat to pay top dollar for, you only get one of in a kit that is expensive ...that is why they will pay for it. leaving you with a lot of left over parts.
Here are some examples:
Sunshark drones - sell for about $10.
The rest - good luck in getting $10 for it.
Commander set combi melta - easily get $5 for it.
The rest? Maybe another $5 which does not cover the cost of the kit.
So, bits don't cut it really, unless you can get a LARGE volume discount.
Some things that DO almost work:
Buy a razorback, sell the razorback sprue, and the rhino separately. You may make about $10.
Buy a tau hammer head - sell the fish, the skyray sprue, and the HH sprue, you will make about $10-12.
But....how much time did that take?
How many hours ordering, picking up boxes, opening, taking inventory, taking pictures, creating listings, getting boxes and mailing, keeping track, going to he post office etc.
Of if you want something hobby related still - buy some paints, and start commissions for your friends.
I own my own business, and I applaud the spirit of entrepreneurship - but I suggest you take your capital and invest it in your self - take some classes on running a small business, understand inventory, cost allocation and accounting.
best of luck!

Hmm, what about making my own bitz for conversions? I've been making some conversion bitz that I planned to cast for my own personal use, but I could just as easily sell them. I've made stuff like "AKA-47s" and some Volkite looking weapons. would that work?

As everyone has already harped on about the difficulty I will throw in my two cents:
> Get a DA Deathwing Command Box - The robed termy torsos alone go from $2.50 - $3.00 each, the hooded heads are $2 each + lots of weapons a few sets of arms etc...
> for smaller parts (purity seals, grenades ect...) add them together in deals, eg: 5 purity seals for $1.
>look for bulk armies people are selling for cheap and bitz them out (i don't know why more places don't do this) - most models can be stripped and disassembled (as ong as they aren't glazed in plastic glue)
> as everyone mentioned vehicles with multiple builds can be seperated for $
Good luck, also any chance of a Dakka discount?

It seems if you get several starter sets the different squads will sell.

What people want most is weapon upgrades (meltaguns, plasma guns, etc.).
What people don't want is more or less anything else. For example, old or OoP stuff usually sells for much more like the amount the purchaser originally spent, and much less like how much the current range goes for.

You can buy a pack of 5 meltaguns or 5 plasma guns for $10 from GW. How the heck are people making money selling these as bitz?

They're metal, thus futzy. Or have they rolled them over to finecast yet? In which case, they're finecast, thus futzy.
At least that's my guess. Before the war store stopped selling, they were getting $7 apiece for plastic meltaguns. I guess there must be some demand.

Because people might only want 3 for $6? Money not spent is money saved.

That would be the case were it not for the fact that the value is a lot worse. It's generally not 3 for 6 compared to 5 for 10, it's more like 1 for 6 compared to 5 for 10.
Of course, 6 is still less than 10, but the value is a LOT worse. There must be something else going on.

For one thing, very few people seem aware that GW even provides them. The molds were also really really old, and the meltaguns in particular are very bulky. They fit very tight in most marine arms, to the point where you are almost forced to cut them to make them fit. They're also already molded with a hand, so you also have to do cutting, especially if you want to preserve any iconography on the arm. Those were a pain in the ass when they were metal. Now they're finecast, all the difficulty inherent in that has become, well, finecast.
