Does anyone else find the fact that we're playing with little plastic spacemen just a little bit hilarious?
Do you have the NERDRAGE, or do you play it ironically?
Answers in ascending order of seriousness.

...it depends. Voted on "Only enough to have fun" which is true when it comes to playing. We have very soft tournaments and in 2 of them I ended up helping my opponents because they were either new-ish with their army or migrated from 5th edition and weren't used to stuff like "Closest models die first" and overwatch.
When it comes to painting and the fluff, oh, I'm all "SERIOUS FRAKKIN' BUSINESS". I always do my best even if I'm just painting a somewhat silly or a reference to another thing paintjob (like my Shockwave Immortal) and I'm a big-time lover of the 40k universe... even with all their "silliness"
But I do enjoy some stabs to the Grimdark world. Like my Avatar sugests

I can't decide whether to paint my SOBs in a serious egypt-inspired desert theme, or in a bubblegum pink theme.
(I actually would rather paint a proper space marine chapter pink, but I want to play SOBs and I want a pink army.)

How can anyone take 40k seriously?
It's got genetically modified power-armoured supermen who fight motile space mushroom people and there are space elves who have guns that shoot ninja stars.
It could only be more absurd if Matt Ward wrote the fluff.
... wait.
I never took it (the game or the rules) seriously.

I don't have a Camera (I keep on blowing the budget my wife sets for me on new models, I hate being an impulse buyer, although I'm sure GW loves me for it) but I'll try and get one some day soon.
Unless I blow my budget again on getting set for Crysis 3 and Rome 2 total war.
Come on Sophia just 20$ more is all I ask.

I guess I take it all somewhat seriously. I prefer to stick to the official fluff, and I'll try to optimise my army list (such as it is) to be getting wins.
Though I'm certainly not adverse to silliness. Things like "Dora the Sororitas" always get a laugh out of me. And I'd probably run a silly army, like 9 Penitents and three Repentia squads, a few times for laughs.

would have to agree that i dont really take the gaming serious but i definitely take the fluff etc pretty seriously.
WH and WH40K used to be MY LIFE, then i took a 3 or so year hiatus, and am just getting back into it, so im definitely not taking it as seriously any more! just love to build and paint models and im just getting back into the actual gaming part, and trying to adjust my rules knowledge to all this 6th edition nonsense!

I enjoy watching games by people who are competitive, but I couldn't play that way. I just have some friends (they're all related actually, about 5 brothers) and we play 40k whenever we get the chance.
I do enjoy painting/assembling stuff though. Even though I can't really paint that well...

*AHEM* Sorry for that moment of heresy and weakness. Concerning the next question: I may play with relative chill, but I demand a fair game and respecting the rules. I'm not a "NO! YOU MOVED AN EXTRA 0,1 OF AN INCH. YOU ARE CHEATING SCUM" guy, but you better keep your units in coherency or I'll start not liking it at all.
P.S: And every time I play I'm so focused and entertained I don't feel any hunger or other stuff. But once the game ends, UFFF.

Im pretty serious when it comes to taking the fluff "seriously", and I say that in quotes because, let's face it, the Orks are hilarious, and are meant to be viewed in something of a hilarious light, even if they are all about the waaagh.
But if you expect me to adopt converted MLP models with Space Marine halves stuck on top as a serious entry into 40K fluff... not going to happen.
I might find the conversion jobs and painting well done, and even congratulate you on the work, if it's deserving, but I won't consider them to be "serious" 40K.

I selected "I take it pretty serious" but at the same time like to generally play for fun.
I'm pretty easy going with letting people do things they may have forgotten to during the correct phase, allowing reroll when dice do funny things, etc...
However, I get annoyed when people play sloppily: moving an extra inch here and there, rolling one die at a time when they should roll all of them, etc...
Right now I'm in a 500 pt escalation league (going to 1k next week) and there are good chunk of fairly new players. I have no problem explaining things to them or playing slowly..... but I hate when they act like they know their codex inside and out - they then proceed to do silly things and I take their word for it that it is correct since I'm an easy going guy (and I can't memorized every codex entry by heart). Seriously, don't pretend you are an expert.... know your own codex rules or at least the few pieces of equipment in your list.
This guard player yesterday had no idea how orders worked but insisted he did.... tried to order 3 per turn (should've been 2) insisted that move move move allowed movement of 3D6 (lol its pick the highest of the 3 D6), and his vox caster apparently allowed orders to be issued to any squad regardless of being within range. - Sigh....

We play by "Vegas tourney high stakes rules", where every model that becomes a casualty get destroyed in various appropriate manner, ID gets smashed with a hammer, JoTWW gets fed to a corgi , railgunned models get shot with a M4 etc.
Then we wait a few months paint and build new armies and do it again..and anyone cheating..gets introduced to a amorous male moose.

On that subject, but somewhat less extreme, I've always wanted to play a game where dead models just got tipped over and left on the board. They could give cover and be difficult terrain. I think it would be interesting to see where all the dead bodies stacked up after the battle.

Ailaros wrote:40k for me is an outlet for my suppressed sense of professionalism.
In each one of the many jobs I've had over the past 6 years, I've never had an employer who ever cared what I had to say, or who ever invested in me as an employee. I've never been part of an industry. Never had a career path.
Meanwhile, in the world of 40k, I can try things out, and develop skills, and innovate, and be rewarded for hard work. It gives me an opportunity to actually be good at something.
None of which has been true for the various temp jobs, contract work, and general part time minimum wage, often for tips, loser nonsense I've been stuck working in all these years.
As such, I'm stuck with 40k. That or maybe I should become a Zen Buddhist...
Or, put another way, I was "one of those smart kids who just didn't apply himself". 40k gives me a chance to apply myself in a way that I don't really have any opportunities otherwise. Plus, I think my time playing 40k and discussing things on dakka has helped me grow as a person in several ways. As such, I voted for "serious".
Of course, it's all a matter of what you're serious about. For example, being serious about 40k as a competitive or strategic exercise is only going to end in pointless frustration. Taking 40k seriously as a social exercise or an impetus to work on painting skills on the other hand, won't.
