The latest instalment in the Terminator franchise will be the first in a stand-alone "rebooted" trilogy.
Paramount Pictures said the fifth Terminator film, based on the original series starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is due to be released in June 2015.
There was no official confirmation on who would direct or star in the forthcoming film.
However Schwarzenegger revealed earlier this month he would be returning to the role that made him a household name.
Speaking at an event in Sydney, Australia, the former governor of California said: "I'm very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star as the Terminator, which we start shooting in January."
Schwarzenegger starred in the first three Terminator films - released in 1984, 1991 and 2003 - which grossed more than $1bn (£655m) at the global box office.
A computer-generated version of the actor appeared in 2009's Terminator Salvation, which starred Christian Bale and Sam Worthington.
The new film will be penned by Shutter Island screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis and Drive Angry's Patrick Lussier.
With a release date scheduled for 26 June, the movie will join a slew of summer blockbusters, coming out a week before Independence Day 2 and two weeks ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
Star Wars - Episode 7 is also due to be released around the same time.
maybe we should build a new barrel to scrape from ?

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I would be totally fine with a rebooted Terminator Trilogy, but to recast Arnie in the role? No. That kind of ruins the point of a reboot.

I want to see:
A terminator dog, with dog skin and stuff.
Ah-nold yell "Get to da choppa!" in all three shows. The first time in reference to a helicopter, the 2nd time in reference to a motor cycle, and the third time in reference to the Slap Choppa "You're gonna love my nuts!"
The hot chick they played the cylon and the hot chick that played 7 of 9 both become undercover terminators at a brothel.

I'd be half interested in more of the actual machine war, but not a reboot. Terminator I and II were Da Bomb. They cannot be topped by mere mortals.

Well, the article just says that Arnold was happy to be invited to Terminator 5. It doesn't say he's the main guy in all 3 movies, does it?

Indeed. If all you're looking for is a platform for special effects, I'd proffer a machine war would be ideal.
And just what is the deal with blockbusters now. If you're putting $8 gazillion dollars on the screen why can't you have a half decent script with decent writing? Its not that hard. You used to do it all the time.

Look I'm going to play devils advocate here.
I'd really like to see a Terminator movie with the Rock as a Terminator. I saw him in some revenge film - Faster, I think it was - and he's a legitimately decent actor. I think he often gets a lot of hammy-ass roles because that is what they write for him, but I strongly suspect he could be just as menacing as a Vin Diesel Riddick if done right. Disclaimer; I've never see his rassling or whatever he did before movies. And I haven't seen that many of his movies, but the revenge one made me think he really might have the chops, he's certainly charismatic as hell and look how far that took Denzel Washington in Training Day.
"Done right" in this case, implies very solid screenwriting. i.e. not Damon Lindelof - that guy is a poopwizard of the highest order.
I think in the right hands, this could be an excellent film. It won't be of course, that's not the world we live in. But... it could be.

Salvation wasn't a good movie, but it wasn't awful either. There were some parts I enjoyed quite a bit. I think they had 2 major strategic mistakes:
Following the continuity as it was laid out in Terminator 3. T3 did a whole lot of damage to the fim as a workable franchise in my opinion. In the first one, they establish what happens, and that the future is mutable. The the second one, they expand upon it - no fate but what we make. It's possible to avert Judgement Day entirely. Everyone's on the same page here - Skynet believes it, the humans believe it. Then 3 comes along and just craps on the whole idea - Judgement Day is fate, fate cannot be changed. That sort of ruins the whole goddamn premise of the movie - why even bother trying to kill Sarah or John Connor? It's going to happen anyway, right? Bizarre. They rightfully realized this problem when the television show The Sarah Connor Chronicles came out, and they followed the events of Terminator 2 as if 3 had never even happened. Then they went back to that same flawed as premise with 4 and now it's just a mess. They should have followed the TV show.
Christian Bale doing his Batman voice for 2 hours did not help me any either.
