Became glamor from Hollywood. Though the term "Sarge" was in effect in use till the US Military became all volunteer. Basically one can be promoted regardless of earning the rank. Unlike today you literally earn the rank. I earn my ranks I much rather you call me by rank. Bing called Sarge might give the perception I'm favoring a soldier or a group of soldiers. Much easier on me to tell them to clean up the latrine, work areas, and what not. Also I have no delay in putting them in harms way to get the mission done or eliminate the threat.

I set the example. They must either meet my standards or exceed my standards. I'm also mentoring them by instilling a mindset similar to mine but not of me. Every individual has a different leadership style. Over time an individual going to like some element of leadership and incorporate into his own. Basically taking the good parts from the NCO's he's been exposed to and making it his own once he achieve his rank.

Yeah it's just a culture thing that's slowly been dying out since the end of the draft, it's more hollywood then anything else. Where the Army and I part ways is when they start calling E6s and E7s "Sargent", like SSgt Reckless above, or any human who's earned his rockers in the Corps calling an individual of a certain rank anything but their rank is seen as pretty damn insulting, especially when it's a demotion. I could NOT get over that the few times I was operating in a joint environment with the Army.

"Excuse me Sargent First Class about this afternoon's training evolution..."
"Oh right that! By the way KMsLastName you know you can just say Sargent right?"
"....but you're a Sargent First Class... not a Sargent, those two things are different. I know Marines are supposed to be dumb but I can count from E5 to E7..."

It's a nickname to clarify. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller. So called because the man had a barrel chest to make you thing he had a keg of beer between his shoulders. All that work killing things and hauling around enough medals to reforge into a battleship.

A fun bar bet if you're around Marines is to ask how many /service/ crosses Chesty had. This is an important distinction for this bet. Each service branch has it's own Service Cross (the Marines and Navy share the Navy Cross) which is the second highest possible award for valor. (Each branch has it's own design for the Medal of Honor as well, with the Marines and Navy sharing a design again) Chesty was awarded five Navy Crosses AND an Army Distinguished Service Cross, giving him six service crosses in total. It's a good way to win a beer, especially off of younger devil pups.

The horse's direct partner if it has one (when Cav was still a thing it was a 1 to 1 relationship like a dog and handler team now) is the horse's connection to the COC.

Let's not trot out a lot of puns in here.

We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

I'm glad I don't live in the USA. Here in England we're far too polite for such violent behaviour, snakebombing and the like.
The worst he'd deserve here for telling bad jokes would be a withering glare..

And Alex, you could probably justify the ultimate British snub for most of these jokes (that isn't a soccer riot. A dismissive sniff while having a sip of tea.
