I've been trying to liven up my Guard army, and decided to kind of go with a cavalry theme in addition to my heavy armor. I already have some Thunderwolf Cavalry and Fenrisian Wolves to kind of go along with it, but I really want to fit in some Rough Riders as well. There aren't any models of them for sale anymore, unless I do Forgeworld (and that would cost me 400 for two squads of ten...), so I was thinking of getting Space Marine Scout Bikes and do some filing to make them look right. Would this be legal, since they are modeled on bikes but are actually cavalry? Would I be able to bring them to tournaments?

Back in the early days of Epic 40K you could have Imperial Army bike squads. So there is even a precedent.

Seeing as Rough Riders can cover essentially anything that's horse-sized and rideable, I can't see why bikes would be a huge stretch anyway. Sounds like a cool idea.

I have seen a few of these on dirt bikes, boars, and even segways. They all play them as rough riders and they all are excellent conversions that add character to the army. I say go for it but have you seen this:

Cold Ones from the WHFB Dark Elf kits also work great for rough riders. The Dark Elf legs also work well with Cadian torsos imo.

Totally legal in most tournaments that I've attended. Cavalry and Bike rules are very similar. Use Guard torsos, remove the bike mounted guns and give them lances from a Warhammer cavalry kit and they'll abide by WYSIWYG. As there are no Bike squads in the IG Codex. it'll be pretty obvious to any tournament organizer that they represent Rough Riders. Nor has Forge World produced rules for IG Bikes yet. Not like them to miss a trick like that, but there you go.

Go for it. Its a pretty common counts-as and can look awesome if done well.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

I'd just make sure that you avoid arguing over LoS or cover save disputes as the biker models have a much lower profile than the old rough riders on horseback.

However, most people will be ok with it. Many players have been doing it for years, so I doubt anyone will really worry too much, and it's not like rough riders are an uber unit either.

Star Trek taught me so much. Like, how you should accept people, whether they be black, white, Klingon or even female...

I would have no problem with it, but if you're asking about tournaments then the only person who could possibly answer that question definitively is the tournament organiser.
