I've been enjoying the 5th Edition Dark Eldar Codex, a lot of fun and a variety of ways to play the army. Drugs, sex and rock n' roll!

I always liked the old Craftworld Eldar. Played alot of games as Alaitoc, Ulthwe and Iyanden. They were quite characterful.

Eldar craftworld codex.
Biel-Tan.
Aspects as troops = awesome. It was the only time my has ever army played exactly how I wanted it to.
As a bonus I got the court of the young king - an exarch bodyguard for my Avatar. He had a harem of four howling banshee exarchs. There was a fire dragon exarch too.
I miss that dex.

However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives. |

That would be 2nd ed... Codex: Angels of Death. And it's my pick too. That, and the 5th Ed BA Codex actually using 5th Ed rules. Then I can keep my all-deepstriking all-jumppack army.

So cool to see so many players from the oldschool days showing up
I feel the 6th ed codexs are just so generalized, nothing stands out unit wise. They are balanced which is good but you don't get to fall in love with crazy genestealer's or strng 10 ap1 broadsides or flavoring up Imp. Guard armies with doctrines in the same way.
So cool

Eldar, 2nd edition. It was the last time they played in 40k how they are portrayed in the fluff.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Witch Hunters. I loved the funky retinues you could make and offered a blank check for modifying. Repentia and Penetiant engines added the fanatic feel of the army.
Second place is the third edition Chaos. I had a khorne army back then. With this new codex I can't use my berserkers anymore without losing IQ points. They failed to capture the feel of chaos completely. Tzeentch, weak at sorcery? Really?
At least they have a codex though.
I know Rogue Trader isn't a codex, but I wore my copy out. It fell to pieces. :(

Nurgle Veteran Marine with the Flu
|
My favorite Codices have to be Orks.
They are the most barbaric race in the galaxy, but actually have the Know-Wotz to create new technologies. Not only that, but they are the least racist race in all of 40k. They'll fit with anyone, against anyone, including Orks. They are the only race that can take another race's vehicles, slap some glyphs on it, and make it theirs. You never see a "Marine-y" Deff Dredd, but Orky Dreadnoughts are in 4 out of 5 Ork Hordes. The Orks don't need fancy armor, technology, weapons, money, Titans, or even any Air to breathe! (Thee was a caption in a GW article saying that Orks are so robust they could fight in a vacuum with no helmets) In a galaxy prone to casting once-great civilizations into the rotting cesspool of forgotten lore and lost glories, the Orks have been dealt the best hand- they simply don't need any of what life has to offer. They're in it for the fun!

For a while it was 4th edition Tyranid.

We actually tested once if I could run my 5th ed scout army without actually opening the codex from counting points to finishing the game and naturally this idea came up randomly so I did not have the chance to go through the rules before this (which would have made it less fun). There was a third guy there checking the codex constantly to see if I was right about the rules and all and during the game I didn't do a single mistake. I counted the points right and remembered all stats and rules from the book correctly. I've spent a lot of time with my scouts.

I started with the 4 ed Eldar codex, during 5 ed. rules. I loved the challenge, and most times the only reason I beat my friends was I knew my codex better they knew their own. The new one is awesome but I want a challenge again. So I am starting up Dark Eldar.

Witch Hunters for me. I loved it all in it's glory and badness. I only started at the beginning of 5th, but it was my first codex. I learned the game playing with that awful codex and struggled uphill with it, but it made me a better player. I got it because it had Sisters of Battle which had fascinated me from before I started playing 40k.

My codex is the current Tau Codex.
Every unit in this codex can potentially be useful. Even the so-called graveyard of the codex, fast attack, harbours three or four options that - if pathfinders didn't exist - would be autotakes.
Furthermore, Vespid are underperformers in the tau codex, and yet they have a similar role to Dark Reapers in the Eldar Codex. The Difference in range is mitigated by speed, and the output might as well be the same. (sure, dark reapers are BS4, but 3 dark reapers is the same price as 5 vespid.)

Above all else it has flexibility with builds. Most vehicles can be taken in squadrons, HQs have a cheap base cost which goes up as you add on equipment/consul templates. There are four troop choices...Overall it's a sandbox as far as how you want to make your army. On top of all this when you choose a legion to run under it unlocks a couple more units and some a couple special rules. Oh, and it has an Admech army list.
Overall it is probably the best Warhammer 40k book printed to date IMHO.
