So I haven't read much fluff throughout the days I'm sure something is listed as to why they don't but I have yet to see it.
So I'm curious why don't they use drop pods?
Thanks

They do, in circumstances that permit them. However, it's pretty rare for CSM to have access to a Battle Barge or similar vessel while tooling around in Imperial space.

Also, if you have cultists on the receiving end, why not have them open a gate for you? You can walk from Planet A in the Eye to Planet B in the Ultima Segmentum in as much time as it takes you to cross a room.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

They might just not have them.

Or they prefer the terror they cause by arriving like a normal army... Drop Pods make for fast kills, and the CSM like to terrify their victims first, make them doubt the Emperor and their planetary governor. Why kill when you can terrify?

I have never played or even seen any forge world units..
Thanks for all the responses though! Makes more sense now

I dunno. Having giant metal pods slam violently in to my position from outer space and releasing squads of bloodthirsty chaos marines directly in my face seems pretty terrifying to me.

Arbitrary GW reasoning?
Pandering to loyalist players?
Really you can pick just about anything because it makes no sense fluffwise.

The problem that GW has with Chaos Marines in 40K is that they technically should have access to pretty much everything that Loyalist Marines do, since the usual explanations given for various things missing as options ('developed after the Heresy' and 'difficult to maintain' being the main culprits) don't hold water when you consider that Chaos Marines include the newly turned as well as the original Heretic Legions.

But if they carry that across into the codexes, Chaos winds up being Codex: Space Marines with Extra Bits.

At which point, what reason is there for anyone to actually use Codex: Space Marines?

So, there's all these arbitrary little rulings on things that, within the scope of the Warhammer 40000 game, Chaos don't use, to give the armies some points of difference.

Because GW wants to make extra sure no one ever has any reason to field Berzerkers since the only durable assault transport available is a massively overpriced brick that you will always be firing snapshots with.

in the fluff they do use them. gamewise CSM are represensted by one short codex while loyalists get a long rules codex for each color you can imagine.

I don't think they're inferior to drop pods, but they are a different sort of transport, which seems to be a lot more useful in the long run.

They have to deepstrike, yes, but they can choose to deepstrike as a zooming flyer. This means you can deepstrike them somewhere safe on the board, and then flat-out to where you want them to be. AV12 flyer (with jink) is about as durable as flyers get. Then, the following turn, switch to hover mode, drop off your choppy squad inside, and let them go to work. Then, when no one bothers shooting the weaponless AV12 dreadclaw, it can pick something up and zoom it somewhere else.
It doesnt really have the same role as a droppod (accurate, turn1 deepstriking), but chaos players are always complaining about the lack of a decent assault transport, and I think the dreadclaw fits that job perfectly. Consider it a flying, uparmoured rhino with an assualt ramp as a 50pt upgrade.

You'd think they'd give them portals or something, I'd love to be able to use sorcerers to rip open portals for assault venues. (Same with daemons admittedly)

The forces of Chaos use dreadclaws for roughly the same effect.

And they don't need them, they have teleporters.

Because they teleport everywhere. Its one of the oldest bits of GK fluff flavour there is.

Drop Pods are the only thing missing from the Codex to turn it Awesome!

Quite happily put up with a lot of the poop unit choices, if I could just get in to combat with them. Heck I'd even buy some CC oblits... OK maybe not.

But I was 2 seconds away from buying a Dreadclaw when they pulled it from the Forgeworld site :(

I find it funny, Space Marines get stuff from other units and Xenos, but heaven forbid if something gets what SM do.

I say it's a conspiracy. Space marine players need the "easy button". Guess we will see when the new SM codex comes out if it's true or not.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Dreadclaws are not Drop Pods. They are Assault Craft.

Dreadclaws were the predecessor to the current Drop Pod, and utilized a ring of meltas over an iris that would cut through a ship's hull to allow troops to be disgorged within. The two existed for different reasons but Dreadclaws could be used as drop pods while still retaining their boarding capability.

cms do have access to drop pods, they're called dreadclaws, but they aren't drop pods like Kanluwn said, they're assault craft that preceded the drop pod but can still be used as drop pods. They have smaller engines to power them to move so they can actually move around and not just fall through space.
