Dakka is the ork word for shooting, but the ork concept of shooting is saturation fire. Just as there is no such thing as a "miss" in a target-rich environment, there is no such thing as a "dodge" in a bullet rich one

This is a brilliant tutorial! I could've built a warhammer fantasy town with all the plastic I thrown away!

Yeah, Orkish buildings (and additions to vehicles) are easily done like this. Thanks.

It is possible to do neater structures as well though (for those of you who are not Ork players).

On that note, here's a wooden box. Made with the same technique.

Thanks.
As I've said to others, you now know what to do with the free building material that comes with every model.

In the back of my mind, I'm trying to design a tool that would make milling the sprue pieces easier (or at least safer).

Ha Ha. Yeah, I don't necessarily take the easiest route from A to B in my modelling (but often the cheapest as I have plenty of time, but not money).

I'm sure there are easier ways, and I'm all ears if people have ideas. This is all about learning and sharing techniques.

A thin enough razor saw or jeweller's saw may be easier for splitting the sprue, but the only saw I have at the moment removes too much material to be useful (which is a shame because I have a suitable vice that would work well with one). I may have to splash out...

Good luck. I look forward to seeing what people produce.

And I'm thinking of producing a kit of sorts for building a hut like this in the future, to go with the boxes I already sell.

My wife has a mandolin for cutting things thinly in the kitchen... I'd use that if I felt like taking my life in my hands (not only is it wickedly sharp... it's my wife's). Like I said... I'll keep thinking.

This, my friend, is one of the coolest terrain pieces I've seen on dakka. I don't always remove my helmet and turn off my chainaxe, but when I do, it's because somebody made an awesome looking wooden cabin out of sprue pieces.

Thanks PL.
It required a fair amount of research and a bit of head scratching, but the painting was fairly easy when it came to it.
It was just a matter of slapping on the various colours (mostly as a wash or dry-brushing) to build up the final colours/effects.

All these fantastic scenery threads, are making me feel inadequate.
What with this and the shanty town one, I will have to try making some.

If you think your important, in the great scheme of things. Do the water test.

Put your hands in a bucket of warm water,
then pull them out fast. The size of the hole shows how important you are.
I think we should roll some dice, to see if we should roll some dice, To decide if all this dice rolling is good for the game.

Do not feel inadequate, I did not expect this hut to come out so well. I am pretty confident that (with patience) anyone can make something along these lines.
The whole point of the competition (that this was entered into) was to create terrain that even someone new to the hobby could make.
Check out the other competitor's pieces of terrain for more inspiration (they were all made from mostly recycled materials): Here is roughly where the competition started, Scroll though and see what everyone did. There was many impressive pieces.

Not sure I've seen the shanty town one Link please if you can.

Thanks Johnny.
Creating all the wooden pieces is time consuming, but (as I've said before) they can be done while you wait for paint to dry on other models and then you can build your hut (or whatever else you want) when you have enough.

Also, if you are doing closed structures (like my boxes), then you only need to texture one side and don't even need to split the sprue. That makes it quicker and easier.

Or you could buy my boxes and wait until I produce a Hut kit...

Well done, especially with the texturing! My younger brother is also a big believer in the utility of Sprue. I wonder if there is an easier way to cut the sprue into planks. Maybe something like a cheese knife?

A small block plane would be ideal, but the problem would be finding a vice that could hold the sprue securely without malforming it from the pressure and/or grips.

Yeah, that is the difficult step. Get a quick and reliable method for that and you're laughing.

dsteingass wrote:A small block plane would be ideal, but the problem would be finding a vice that could hold the sprue securely without malforming it from the pressure and/or grips.
Maybe if you make a jig with a lip to hold the sprue up against. Could probably do a few at a time. I have a little plane and may give that a go next time...

Also, I thought that you could use the Chopit II thing you have, Dave. Do you think that would work? Again, holding the sprue is probably the problem.
