Hello!

This is my first of probably very few posts on these formums. There is a TON of information here and I hope I can learn from the mastahs of dakkadakka.

I am completely new to 40k.
I have a 6th ed. Rulebook and a few codices (CSM (6th), DA (6th), SM (5th), BA (5th)).

My best friend at work first got me hooked on the universe with the Space Marine Battle Series books. I migrated to the Horus Heresy series and I love the deep lore huge universe.
My friend also wanted to get into the game side of things, start out small and work our way up. There was interest with one additional person in our social group but his finances all around have been tight (single income family of 4) so it's never went beyond discussions.

Well, two things happened:

1) My best friend was recently diagnosed with cancer (They are treating the cancer and we all have high hopes) and he now has time on his hands for reading and painting.

and

2) I was deployed overseas for a spell, bringing in a good chunk of bonus $$.

Overall the Good Lord has been generous to me and my family lately and I wanted to spread that around. So, I decided I would finance a starting army for both of my two friends.
We thought we would limit to 500 points and that is what drove me to dakkadakka.

My initial thoughts was to get a battleforce for their chossen army and supliment with an HQ of their choosing.
As for myself, I am incredibly torn. I was thinking of going the DV route and then supplimenting either the CSM or the DA to make a proper (with research) 500 pnt force.

I will be browsing the army section of the forums and looking for good ideas and setups. I may even pose my questions directly and, if so, I hope to be hearing from some of you.

Not sure if it's still the case, but there used to be some decent deals on DV staff floating around from people who only wanted half the set. That might help with putting a force together.

Definitely hit eBay for DV stuff, and there will be good deals here in the swap shop and Bartertown as well. For SM, a new codex is hitting shelves in 2 weeks: try to avoid buying anything for them, as wants may change with the new books, and some people will offload armies. You're being very generous, and it's awesome of you. Not many individuals willing to do that for anybody, with how expensive this hobby can get. Welcome to the fold, brother.

Nice! Thankyou for the heads up! I pray for some cost adjustments in the vanilla SM HQ options (in addition to other areas).

Starting out fresh in the hobbie I'm kind of a sucker for buying things new in box...I'm sure I'll get over that behavior soon enough.
