Does anybody know of a website that sells black primer for relatively good price ie not £10.00 like games workshop I used to order army painter from triplehelix for £6.00 but they have informed me due to Royal Mail updating thier rules they can no longer post aerosols.
I have found several shops in my local town that sell plastikote primer but I'm not sure whether its any good or suitable for minis. I have bought halfords white primer and that does seem rather good compared to gw's primer but I really need a black.
I have checked my local B&Q and they sell this but it's still £8.00
http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/paint-woodcare/specialist-paints/spray_paint/Plasti-Kote-Super-Spray-Primer-Black-400ml-9254058?skuId=9261757
Do the undercoats specifically have to be a "primer" or will any matt black spray do the trick?
Thanks in advance

A primer coat needs to be primer - primer is chemically different than normal paint - designed to adhere to your model, and designed to allow other paint to stick to it.
(if your primer is also the same color as your base model color, what you might be calling "undercoat" thats just a bonus).
I use the rustolem 2x cover primer from the hardware store here in the colonies, but I could not seem to find it from any uk supplier.
Hopefully someone else more familiar with your region might be more useful....

I know a lot of the guys in the UK swear by Halford's primer. I personally use Krylon black primer and have no problems at all.

I promise you, Halfords do a black primer!

Ok, not strictly defined as a primer, but them the GW Chaos Black isn't strictly a primer either. This will do the job though.

Not in a looong time, as I do most of my priming with an airbrush these days, but yes, back in the day. Its a can of matt black spray acrylic, you can overthink these things a bit too much, try it on a test model, if for some bizarre reason its not good, move on, we aren't talking gold bullion here!

Plastikote will do the job but in my experience for the quality vs price you might as well buy GW.

It's not great. It's glossy and smelly. It will prime and paint over just fine but not value for money in my opinion.

I was going to suggest the Wal-mart primers but you [and I] live in the wrong country.

I don't know if you've used Army Painter before or not, but I've run in to so many problems with Army Painter I generally don't use considering Army Painter is.. What? All of a quid cheaper than GW? I would actually recommend GW for black primer waaayyyy over Army Painter.

Army Painter primer needs a fair bit of practice: you need to do it indoors, and spray close, about 6 inches. With practice, I've found the skeleton bone gives really good results - it's still not as thin as the GW white primer, though, when seems to get into nooks and crannies really well, perhaps ti's smaller paint particles. There are some AP primers, yellow in particular which are no good at all. I've only tried GW, AP, tamiya and humbrol sprays recetnly, and I haven't tried the AP black, but it's hard to argue against GW, which does give really good coverage and has to be worth the investment considering the cost if you mess up .

It can be a bit pants sometimes - you need to make sure you are not getting the enamal sprays as well. I used to use it all the time until I got back into Halfords sprays.

I only undercoat in grey or white unfortunately, so I do not use their black.

Well, I can see Artfx is wrong purely by virtue of the fact it states it has a satin finish.
Matt is almost compulsory for a primer, anything with a smooth finish, be it satin or gloss, is no good for a primer in basically all applications.
