Currently that would be Thousand Sons, because they suck.

Overall, I guess I see Night Lords the least (ie. not ever)

It's not going to be the god-dedicated armies. There will always be someone interested in those. While none of the people at my FLGS play a specific legion, there is a CSM army devoted to each of the 4 major chaos god there. Of course, black legion, in general, is popular as well.

After that, I'd say the most popular would probably be iron warriors. After that, it's kind of a crap shoot, as none of them are THAT popular.

Which really leaves, on your poll, alpha legion, night lords, and word bearers. All of them have awful paint schemes, though there has been some attempt to rescue alpha legion and night lords in the current codex.

If I really had to say, absolutely, I'd probably say word bearers. I've seen only one word bearer army... ever. Including both online and in person. They suffer from a bad color scheme, and bad fluff (well, not bad, but not rare or differentiated. Religious zealots, you say? Get in line), and have extra suffered from the fact that they're a demon-based army, but have spent two whole rules editions without much serious in the way of demons. You can finally ally demons now, but that hasn't undone the damage.

It's weird to me that Night Lords is in the lead here, since you see so many of them on Dakka. I would have put them as the MOST played, behind the big four. I've even seen more Night Lords than I have Black Legion.

What am I missing? Invuln save, AP 3 bolters? With Soul Blaze? What's not to love? I don't actually play them, but they look pretty tasty.

I've personally never seen any others *IRL* only on dakka.
Although I would expect the winner to be Alpha Legion/Word Bearers/Night Lords, becuase of a lack of rules for those legions.

1Ksons are seen as bad as they cost so much (something like 250-270 for the squad IIRC) and they die exactly as fast as plain CSM's to bolter fire. But for the price of 1ksons, you can get some upgraded CSM's that'll last longer.

That isn't going to stop me using some soon though...

I've seen some fantastically painted Night Lord armies in my time, so I would disagree with the earlier poster who made the point they had dodgy paint schemes, but it's a question of personal preference.

Anyway, it's a shame about what I've been hearing about 1000 sons (them being rubbish!) I've seen some spectacularly painted 1K sons armies in my time.

1ksons have a lot of points spent on mandatory upgrades. If you don't actually use their special rules, you can't not take them, which means you're spending points on waste.

A vast majority of people can't be bothered to learn how to get the most of 1ksons rules, so they just dismiss them as overpriced garbage. Overpriced if you can't make use of all those special rules, but hardly objectively garbage. They're like possessed in that respect. You get more than what you pay for, but you've got to be able to actually use them to make up for the cost.

cause your paying 23 PPM (65 for your craptastic psyker squad leader) for a unit that goes down just as fast as all the other meq's out there to small arms fire. ontop of that how often do you see units out of cover? if you bring Tsons you think your opponent will have his 3+ units out in the open just to eat the inferno bolts? heck no he will camp those units in cover... like everyone does.

Except they have very, very specific circumstances that could make them good, and it's only if the enemy is completely horrible.

And even then you've got more reliable, better AP3 strewn throughout the codex, like possessed who won't be able to kill enough to make their points back in worth.

I would imagine that the challenge of Night Lords scheme makes them popular for the dedicated painters amongst the hobby people.

I have the only Thousand Sons army I've ever seen personally (pics are in my sig!), but I have to vote Night Lords- I've seen the rest of the cult Legions, and plenty of Black Legion and Word Bearers, but haven't seen Night Lords since 3rd Ed (and I've never seen a good looking Night Lords army...).

Slow and Purposeful means no Overwatch. The Invulnerable save doesn't matter when they're so expensive that the models die embarassingly to volumes of small arms fire. Soul Blaze is all but useless because it doesn't stack.

Not to mention that in most cases AP3 is either vastly overvalued or the non-AP3 weapons are often just as good on a pts-investent basis and better against other targets.

It's the price tag on a unit that really isn't much better at killing regular infantry than normal marines and dies as easily to marines to high rates of fire. Soul blaze would have made them awesome...if it stacked.
