I haven't had a really deep look into the HQ's yet but I was thinking Inquisitor Corteaz or Ghost Knights, who do you guys think I should take, if ghost knights how many?

Depends on the army you're running. What kind of units do you primarily field?

I field an Inquisitor Warband army which obviously requires Coteaz. I also field a Deathstar army that revolves around a pair of Inquisitors.

If you're curious about how people play their Inquisitors, I direct you here.

I am just starting, so haven't came up with an army, I might use an inquisitor warband but first I need to know what it means when it says it doesn't take up a force organization slot

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Since I'm starting I'll probably not be making alliance's quite yet, I will not be playing any games over 750 for a while, so I might use a paladin squad, GK strike squad, and a purgation squad.

Personally I enjoy a Grand Master for the versatility of the Grand Strategy rule. For lower point games a cheap and easy Brotherhood Champion or an Inquisitor are my go to HQ choices.

Inquisitor for a really cheap HQ, you can make him Psyker (1) to get Divination power and/or throw a Psycannon on him
Coteaz
- Henchmen ... nothing more said
Librarian (better psyker than Inquisitor, fits into Terminator squads)
Draigo (if you want a Grand Master, you will take Draigo)

No other (competitive) options atm imho

I think Coteaz is the best overall, you really can't get any better for his points, plus he unlocks henchmen which are fantastic in 6th.

My top picks would be Coteaz, Draigo, and a TDA Inquisitor. Only take Draigo if you are going for Paladins as Troops though. The other two however work in any list, bring you Divination, and are cheap. The TDA Inquisitor also brings you a cheap Psycannon.

I only run Grey Knights as an ally detachment. I have not felt bad about the point investment for the brotherhood champion and what he brings to the table. He is cheap, has a lot, hard to off. I cant think of another 2+/4+ for 100 points. I run him with a strike squad in a razorback.

2,000 points

265 point detachment

Imperial Knight detachment: 375

Iron Hands: 1,850

where ever you go, there you are

What exactly does he bring to the table? And how do you figure that a 1 wound character is hard to kill?

I'll second taking only Coteaz or TDA Inquisitor with ML1 and Psycannon. They are great options for 100-110 pts.

If you take Draigo for the Paladins you'll be outnumbered like crazy. I'd just get a brotherhood champion some PAGKs and a Unit of Terminators to get started, it's cheap, fun, and you'll have some of the best models in all of 40K.

Draigowing is still quite a powerfull army if well played.
Sure you will be outnumbered but you are quite resilient (with Draigo tanking the hard shots), nasty in CC and in shooting at 24".

The brotherhood champion is not a very competitive HQ at the moment (too fragile) and terminators are not competitive either (paladins are much more competitive, but still not great without Draigo).

As for models, i totally agree they are great !!!

I usually run Valeria although I know she's not the most competitive choice, sometimes I'll run draigo and a champion if the points allow it. Although for me its usually an inquisitor geared for how I need it, or Valeria.

Coteaz is the best generalist HQ, he gives you alot of options (and is just a solid buy in general) and would be my first recommendation. If you do ghost knights, I'd say 3-4 is a good number if you're deepstriking, and 2-3 if you're staying with the rest of the army.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.

Coteaz is the strongest by a fair margin. I also like Inquisitors for being super cheap.

I am most partial to Grand Masters though. The grand strategy can really turn a bad setup upside down. I don't really care for ghost knights myself. Having them all die due to losing Mordak would be a pain.

If you are going for a "Standard" GK army, an Inquisitor is the best.

Options:
Coteaz- Cheap L2 Psyker with access to the best lore (Divination), 3 wounds, 2+ save, but NO INV, Lots of other special rules that are just gravy.

Malleus Inquisitor: Terminator Armor, Psycannon, Psyke (Divination)- I would say this is one of the strongest shooting HQ's in the game. Great shooting on his own, and increases the shooting power of the unit with divination.

Xeno Inquisitor: Rad Grenades and Psyker (Divination)- This guy is cheap and turn any unit into a combat powerhouse. Re-roll to hit, lower toughness for more wounds.

Simply put the Divination signature spell is one of the best things for GK's. Prescience lets you re-roll to hit in the shooting and the assault phase.

A unit like a Strike squad goes from being okay at shooting or combat, to being a real powerhouse in every phase of the game. GKs are one of the few armies with generalist units that cam make good use of the re-roll in the shooting and the assault phases.

--------

There are a few other HQs that let you build your army is a different way.

Grand Master: Grand Strategy lets you skimp on Troops, while still having enough scoring units. Making your highly mobile Interceptors or Highly Mobile and Durable Teleporter-Dread Knights scoring is a bit unfair. Only use in larger games as you need about 200 points for this guy and about 500 points for your troops before you can start to take the Knights and Interceptors.

Draigo- Lets you go ALL IN on a single unit of durable paladins, with a few supporting units.

Librarian- Use ONLY for the GK spells. If you want divination you want an Inquisitor. the GK spells can work well with paladins. Shrouding for stealth against AP2. Sanctuary to protect objectives from assaults. Might of Titan to bash vehicles or more STR in combat. Quicksilver lets you take swords for the 4++ iNV in combat, but still hit first.

---------

Honestly, the rest of the GK HQs are not that good. They are not really bad, but usually a ~100 pt Inquisitor with Divination and a Psycannon will add so much more to your unit.

---------

Henchmen

1) They are a separate unit from the Inquisitor you took them with. They can start together or the inquisitor can go somewhere else.

2) Henchmen are an "Elite" unit (NOT SCORING). You can take 1 per inquisitor, but they do not use the Elite slot on your FOC. You can take an inquisitor, Henchmen and 3 other elite units.

3) If you are running Coteaz, Henchmen are troops. They are Scoring, count toward your minimum troops, and they take up a Troops slot on your FOC (Max of 6 ect.)
