Subject: Why would matthew ward decide that Lion El Jonson is in the rock?

Neophyte undergoing Ritual of Detestation

I haven't been here for a lot, but I know that there was a lot surrounding where the DA's primarch was, and that there was a lot of mystery about the DA's especially from the books, like was it actually The Lion who was tainted by Chaos? Where did he go? Who is this cypher character? Why does he have the lions sword? And why is he looking to be redemmed by fixing it? Is he The Lion? So why did Matthew come out and have to say that he is in the rock? It takes away too much of the mystery about the dark angles in my opinion.

Ward did not decide anything. It was always stated to be so since 2nd edition.

With the disclaimer that all canon in the 40k universe is thought to be originating from an 'in universe' writing style, and is thus subject to author/narrator bias: the Lion was always loyal, but his curse (so to say) is that people will doubt him for his allegiance to the Emperor, when all he ever cared about was loyalty.

Where I read there was a bit on him being known for his speed but yet took far longer than he should have to go to Terra to help the emperor, but anyway, knowledge gained is knowledge gained, regardless of how I acquired it. But regardless, I would love to know more about cypher, even though being so mysterious makes him cool. If what I heard was correct then luther predicts The Lion will wake soon. Which will be interesting to hear about.

He didn't make it back to Terra because Curze and his Legion had bogged the Lion down in a brutal campaign called the Thramas Crusade. Jonson never received any orders in time due to Warp dickery.

Unfortunately you aren't likely to ever hear about this, not save for fan-fiction that is. Games Workshop keep the setting at more or less the same timeframe. There have been some big steps forward in the background, but these tend to be the current "big war" in a setting that doesn't have much impact on other background.
In second edition it was the 2nd War for Armageddon. In third we had the Piscina campaign, the 3rd War for Armageddon and a Black Crusade. In 4th the Battle for Macragge was covered, and while it had existed before, it cemented further details. 5th edition was the Battle for Black Reach, which is now "in the recent past" and we have a repeat of the 13th Black Crusade, which actually notches the timeline BACKWARDS a little.
Some special characters and details of individual units may change, but certainly none of the BIG details are ever resolved. It's part of what keeps the setting interesting - there would, for instance, be no point in having a Chaos Fallen army if GW ever confirm that Luther is correct, Cypher turns up and all the Fallen are forgiven.

So you just barely started playing/reading about 40k, and you've already started whining about authors based on things that aren't even true?
Maybe it's time to take a step back and paint some models, get off 1d4chan so much dude.

And there is my biggest problem with GW and their handling of the 40K setting. No real progress, just the same year lasting for eternity.

Ah now I have you, now I can eat. Now I can enjoy you, or store you as meat.

Mat Ward decided that the lion is in the rock because Freddie Mercury and Optimus Prime decided to make Vladimir Pughs rules disappear from the imperial fists Ultramarine space marine codex

he has always been in the Rock, near death
all of the loyal primarchs are dead, near dead and in stasis or lost doing feh all.
Cypher has never been alluded to as being the Lion.

According to a friend of mine - the near death bit is retconned now and he's just waiting for the right time to wake up.
Is there any truth in that?
I've not read the new codex.

He's never been "near death" while sleeping in the Rock. I believe the words from the second edition account of it were "waiting patiently" (though in a sleepy way, mind, it's not like he's twiddling his thumbs or practicing Sudoku in there or anything).

In the 2nd edition book, Luther "mortally wounds him" with a nasty psykic attack. I dont own the 6th edition codex. It might have been retconed but he was nearly killed in the original fluff.

6th Edition DA codex states that the Lion has now fully healed and all that's left is for the Emperor to order him awake. (note that this generally isn't presented as a myth or legend. ....after all, considering only the Emperor and the watchers know that Lion is down there, who would be telling or hearing this legend in the first place?)
That's actually moving the plot forward, if really slowly. Originally all we knew was that the Lion was down there comatose. Now he's finally healed (time progression) and all that's left is for the Emperor to order him awake. We've actually taken one small step towards a potential possible storyline event where the primarchs return (not that that'll necessarily happen, but 6th Ed DA codex has taken one more step towards it)

I was told along time ago that cypher is a title, passed down from one cypher to the next, and that he is the keeper of the knowledge of all the actual events that lead up to the unforgivening, and they believe when the lions sword is fixed, he will awake and forgive them, and lead them all along with the imperium in the final defeat of chaos.
