Tough question... I give you that. Is the idea that we aren't allowed to choose heritage? Like to choose caste or family to gain better ranks in army (for example being an Ethereal?). If we can then it would be Tau. If not, then most likely Slaaneish cultist. It might be fun to help leading a faction that is fueled with pure idealism and propaganda and as an ideology "For greater good" is kinda lovely. I doubt that I'd need to explain the other option.

assume you are a warrior/diplomat not the lowest, but nor are you highest ranking people. that make sense? (being a lord general or some other form is fine if you want that )

As much as I like Tau, being a Space Marine would be awesome. If I was to pick a particular chapter, I would say Imperial fists or Black Templars.

Adeptus Astartes - to the grave (unless dreadnought'd, the service continues).
Even though the training would suck hard, having a risk of one or more implant failures that might kill you, free time is limited (or none at all), discipline is tough, and enemies even tougher, I'd still pick the life of an Astartes. A guaranteed heroic grave, and an ultimate respect of the Imperial citizens.

...As a good second choice, it must be the gunner/loader of Basilisk battery. Far away from frontlines, commissars won't dare to shoot you too eagerly due to special training and importance of the artillery fire.

I'd be a Sister of Battle. They are "normal" gals rocking the power armour. Of course I would have to undergo *major* surgery to even be allowed in...

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Dark Eldar. In a universe with no real promise of an afterlife, they are the army that offers the best balance of A) quasi-immortality and B) my own free will.

I never mentioned mind control but you can't deny they are fed propaganda about the greater good, just like space marines zealotry towards The Emperor.

true, but its more like the stuff fed to the IG about the emperor, most chapters of SM do not worship the emperor as a god. They revere him, but not as a god :3.

Dark Eldar, because they are the only race that is truly about freedom (Ironically). Every other race fights because they have to (By law or by nature) and only Dark Eldar fight because they think they deserve to. They are also the *possible* longest lived creatures that aren't gods or Quasi gods like C'tan. They also have the best promotion system where even a slave can rise to the highest perches of society (look at Vect!) simply by being smart enough to get their.

I find it ironic that its the slavers and pirates that offer the best career advancement in the universe, the best medical/dental care, the best 'after work' benefits and the most freedom to choose how they live. I guess pirates have always been about freedom.

Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."
