I just started playing the Zork trilogy and I've played some other text-based games in the past and I wondered what some of your memories are from playing text-based games. I was going to say 'favorite memories' but wandering into the jaws of a wandering grue isn't a fond memory for most people.

Does planetscape torment count as text based adventure?

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Obviously not.

And to the the OP, also no. Never played a text based adventure because... well I rather like the visual element and otherwise I'd rather play a pen&paper RPG if possible.

Have a look at Star Wars: Legends of the Jedi. It's an multiplayer online, text based rpg, with around 50 players on at any time.

Connect to legendsofthejedi.com port 5656

LotJ is a text-based roleplaying game (affectionately known as a MUD) set in the Star Wars universe. We do not follow the strict canon story of Star Wars. Instead, our unique timeline begins at an early point in the Star Wars expanded universe, continues to the Galactic Civil War and ends in the post-Empire era. No matter what your favorite era of Star Wars is, you’ll find it here.

Roleplay is enforced. All positions on LotJ are filled out by players, from the heroic Jedi Knights and benevolent Republic Senators, to crafty ship builders, dangerous crime lords and even dark, mysterious Sith Masters. LotJ players are never without exciting parts to play.

What are you waiting for? The legend awaits!

I've only really deigned to code my own text adventures, and let others play them. the biggest pain was a did you mean "CORRECT SPELLING" feature. Oh yes and they were all made way after text adventure were popular. But I do enjoy pen/paper rpg's.

Does Zinyak's rise to power count?

I remember that I forget which Zork I count as one of the few games I did not finish.

The only text based game whose name I remember playing is Amnesia. A good game, in my memory, anyway. There were others I remember playing on the C64, but I don't recall the names.

I am, however, a huge fan of their successor genre: the "point and click adventure game," of which I feel Gabriel Knight was the pinnacle. I'm enjoying Cognition right now.

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

When I was 11-12 I played a free online text based game. It was more RPG/duelling than adventure though. It was called "Arenan" ("The Arena"), and you created a gladiator. You could be human, elf, dwarf, orc or troll. You challenged beasts and other players gladiators, leveled up, made money, bought new gear. I remember it being loads of fun.

Though when they did so that you could no longer cheat I stopped playing
