Comrades today foolish activists protesting against the best interests of the Rodina are having a "learning experience" surrounding Russian prison conditions, and why when you're harassing things in Russian waters you need to stay on your own goddamn boat. The fascist warmongers boarded a proud Russian oil rig, clearly intent on sabotage no doubt, disrupting the crew of staunch Sovie... err Russian workers labors in the name of the people. Heroic sailors of the Russian Coast Guard captured these foul dogs of The West (TM) and have removed them to Murmansk where they shall face the justice of the Will of the People under the eyes of our wise leader Comrade Putin.

Officially being charged for piracy: https://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/article/ALeqM5jCIWo9s1VTcTfsDpIhOMyL49fmFw?docId=b6736c99-41e9-4316-aa5a-189ca618f472

While I don't think piracy is quite the right charge, scaling a drilling rig, besides being insanely dangerous to yourself and others is still not something one should do. Especially as a protestor. Stepping on to private anything is a great way to land yourself in a cell even in the United States.

I rather be caned till I'm unconscious then spend time in a gulag near the artic circle. I, if I ever imagine myself protesting, would just hold a sign and if LEO tell me to go home I go the Hell home.

Well maybe not equally, the cells would be a bit nicer, and I think most U.S. cell blocks are non-smoking. No word on Vegan menu options in the mess hall though. *shrug* might be lighter sentencing and that sort of thing here as well, as with all criminal charges it depends on the circumstance, my great aunt is a Benedictine nun and her order's entire purpose is to go out and protest people for sucking. She's had to bail more then a few sisters out of county (you have to think the arresting deputy went home and had a drink after locking up a nun) lock up for trespassing (Reebock and Nike are quick to call the cops, and are favorite targets of the Sisters for their questionable labor practices. The School of the Americas is another popular one for their questionable... everything.)

If found guilty, the 30 detained activists could face a maximum punishment of 15 years in jail.
OOoooooh boy.... That's not an enviable jail term. Especially since it's a Russian jail.

I get the impression what he actually meant is that the Greenpeace protestors shouldn't expect special treatment just because they're from Western countries. And I'm inclined to agree with him. You get far too many people going to various countries around the world from my own UK and thinking local laws don't apply to them because they carry a British passport. Then they think that the embassy should send in the SAS to bust them out when they get nailed for it.

When the reality is that they shouldn't be having sex in public places/gobbing at people/getting drunk and urinating on public monuments/smuggling drugs.

Perhaps in the future, certain protestors will now realise that not all governments are as gentle as the Japanese one,

You Americans have a certain dislike of protesters don't you? I've noticed it's quite common.

I'm not one myself, I hardly see the point, close to 500,000 protesters came to London to march for the rights to continue Fox hunting, what did it achieve...Nothing.

So I really don't see the point, the world is totally buggered let's face it, but I do see the merit.

They're destroying habitats and the environment so protest away, again it wont achieve anything but go crazy Greenpeace.

Boarding a Russian oil rig though, did they board it? I thought they just skimmed around it.

On my list of nations from which not to board ships, Russia is number one. Sure, it's not a ship, but it's related to oil. In Soviet Russia, law breaks YOU!

Yeah, I suspect that a lot of the dislike is for people who think that the right to protest extends to trespassing, destruction of property, assaulting police, being disruptive and so on.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Ever since the Rainbow Warrior lawsuit Greenpeace has been on a self righteous eco crusade buoyed by the expectation that they are immune to rebuke.

It was only a matter of time before some of them trod on toes, even by technicality and gave either Russia or China an excuse.

Russia cant be bullied on this, and frankly most western countries will quietly look the other way while Greenpeace is brought down a peg or two. Its long overdue.

As for the charges, piracy is a bit steep but the Russians probably waited until the protesters over-reached themselves, steped over a legality line and then were comprehensively swooped up.

My guess is the 'Arctic 30' will spend token prison time, Putin doesnt want long term bad publicity on this, but the ship will be confiscated and Greenpeace will have learned a valuable lesson: They can sail about and hold banners, but cannot actually legally stop the activities they dislike.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Ghandi said something along the lines of

"Be the change that you wish to see in the world"

I don't see anything wrong with what GP did and I applauded them for it, yes it was ultimately doomed to go bad but the activists know that an arrest is usually on the cards.

Press of any kind around this subject is what GP want and it's such a large story that even a tiny forum on the internet focused on miniature gaming is talking about it.

That's awareness.

But now they do have to pay the price it seems, and a hefty one at that, 15 years is crazy but I don't see Merica and GB standing by and letting their citizens pay a heavy price like that, the media will have a field day and before we know it there will be stories of the US planting anti nuke missiles in Poland again.

Ghandi was a genius, His entire pacifist philosophy was to show the brutality and make people feel sad for them, he never did anything stupid. The thing about Ghandi, When he broke the law, it was never the to the Detriment of others, Like when he made salt or burned his papers. These people broke the law in several places, clearly to the detriment of others.

And kill the very tree they are trying to "protect"

And yeah... I'm sure that the press can yell and scream til theyre blue in the face, but most western governments won't lift a finger on this... And I hope Putin's Russia keeps them their full term, maybe they'd return to GP to say Feth Off, or "hey, ya know that really sucked monkey balls, so umm, let's protest using other tactics, since you didn't seem to learn from me being gone the last 15 years"
