Hi!

After a very long hiatus were real life sucked all my time (as is its way), I have finally rekindled my passion for epic space marine.

For those in our little circle in Taccomms remember the pictures of what I affectionately call the "primarchload" of epic minis.

I never really did an inventory to see how much it was and wanted to share the process of unpacking and documenting it.

While lots need to be re-painted (most I did over 20 years ago), there are some very nice armies done more recently (like IG and parts of the SM forces) and I have a section of rare and superbly painted pieces towards the end of the thread.

If you like epic minis give the thread a visit and I hope you enjoy it.

This is amazing, I image you picked it up when you were young, judging the the paint schemes?

Just the Emperor titans and Tyranids alone would net a small fortune on ebay.

It would be great if things like the Tyranids and the Emperor Titans and the Eldar had a more cohesive paint scheme.

Good luck with all this.

Hi!

I have currently commissioned several painter to begin the long and laborious project of painting all this.

How long it will take is anyone's guess.

Hi!

You are correct. I have not painted for 20 years and was in my mid to late twenties. No patience and no skill. The Imperial guard at the end of the thread (as most of the stuff at the end of the thread) was painted by others and are of better quality.

I've commissioned a ton of people to do diverse things for me (from painting, conversions and sculpts) for a massive update. Once the first wave comes in I will post the link to the pictures. I already have some samples and they look beautiful

In the end almost everything gets re-done. However I have to wonder how many years this will take. Titans alone number over 350 individual models. But they will be done in distinct groups to represent different legions.

Like I said before, I have no patience or skill for painting. But I do have time and money for others to do it for me.

Wow. I have one Titan, and I thought that was an epic force. But thats nothing to 350 of the bloody things.

I swear you've got like, an actual Imperial Guard army here in its entirety. An Ork WAAAGH. Multiple Chapters of Marines. A Tyranid Hive Fleet... etc etc

Dunno what I'd even do with all that myself. It'll cost you an arm and a leg to get it all painted up but by god when you do I'll have to fly over there just for a chance to see it all

You know what you've got to do now though... put together several dozen tables and have an enormous battle with tens of thousands of individual models on the table. The biggest battle in 40k history

Hi!

The largest battle I have run is 40 thousand points per side (80k total). It spanned 3 tables 18 feet long by 4 feet wide.

My ultimate goal, is the "big one". A 100k point per side battle.

I'm not sure how to tackle it table-wise or where, but that's the plan.

Hi!

I have not been idle since I posted my thread on the "primarchload". Many commissions to paint, convert and upgrade my collection are underway and I just received this small addition (well, small by primarchload standards...) of tyranid mycetic spores you can see here:

If the painters schedule holds, my "final touches for the Imperial Guard army will be done next month and I will share those pictures as soon as they arrive.

Wow, those are pretty neat. As I am new to wargaming I have never seen 40k stuff like this. Just the box art on the old boxes is really neat. I'm going to have to see if I can find some of these just to have and paint for fun.

The largest battle I have run was 40k per side (tyranid horde versus Imperial guard). The logistics are related to how many people are available. The more people the quicker it goes. Its like running several games on one table. But that was back in the day though, when more people whom played epic were available. This time it may be just me, so it will takes many days, no doubt.

It may actually come to that, since while I have the table, I do not have enough room to put them in a row. This is the only part of the logistics that has me stumped.

DeadMutagen94 wrote:honestly I feel 40k should be in epic scale anyway..

I have not played 40k since rogue trader days, but yes, I agree. That scale is for skirmish, but GW's sales requirements have pushed it into ever more ridiculous large formations at that scale. You want tank companies, titans and air war on one table, play epic.

Million wrote:How many imperators were there in your collection?

I have about 12 Imperators mounted in varies degrees of painting. There are about another dozen in boxes. Add to this about half a dozen warmonger variants (with the metal rare parts) and that probably around 30.

About as many mega-gargants...

I found it a struggle to fit 2 times 8K armies on a regular 6x4 table so I dread to think how large a space 100K points would require. Obviously, if you bulk out the points totals with loads of titans then it reduces the model count a little but still, I can only imagine you would need a warehouse or something to fit that in.

Hi!

I'm giving serious consideration of running such a game as an "event". In other words rent a location (likely at a hotel so people can stay there), invite as many people that can make it and basically span a whole weekend.

While it is still about 2 to years off (all my projects should be done by then), it would be great to try to do it this way.

The problem I have with these guys that have these huge piles of unused Epic miniatures is that their giant collections could be providing miniatures for dozens of other players that are otherwise scrounging online for things they have huge numbers of. Exactly what is the reason to have dozens and dozens of titans, and huge boxes of units sitting around unpainted and un-assembled? It's like OCD to the extreme.

Call me a downer, but's such a waste to see such huge piles of material for a cool game never seeing even a bit of use.

Depends on how and when he bought it. There was a time when we though old epic prices were expensive.. but reasonable. I can't imagine what that would cost now? I mean one knight is $140, You used to be able to by a reaver in a blister for under $10, and a box of six warlords for $20.

I used to run a hobby store a long time ago, so I played a lot. I used to run 20k point per side games on a regular basis. One Christmas week long ago I played over two dozen games, sometimes as many as three games in a day.

I can confidently say I have used my collection thoroughly through the years. While my play time is less as I grow older, I have dedicated game room to lay them up and play, if only by myself.

As to why its so large see below.

chiefbigredman wrote:Awooohwooo weeeewaaaaa that's a crazy collection...I don't even want to know how much that would cost...actually I do but I think I would be so rattled haha

Before the expansion in the makes now, it is conservatively valued between 15 and 20 thousand dollars. Once the currently expansion that involved pro painting is done it will push 30k and more. I have actually contacted my insurance broker to insure it separately outside my home owners insurance.

I used to be a hobby store owner before I went into medicine. I have never bought at retail price. In the good old days before GW went direct, I could get things at 50% retail. When epic 40k went belly up I got blisters for 1 and 2 dollars, even large figures like ork gargants I got for 5 dollars each. I once got 60 leman russ tanks for 60 dollars. 1 dollar a tank!

I did not even pay retail for Forgeworld resins, since I used my contacts to get those at a discount as well, which was hard to do. It wasn't huge one (10-15%), but when you buy volume you save a ton.

This is not counting all the stuff I bought from private collectors as they dumped their stuff after epic 40k flopped. I once got over 2000 dollars worth of blisters for 600 dollars. The several years between epic 40k's demise and the rise of epic Armageddon was literally the golden age for bargains (1999-2002). GW even sold never seen rarities through their mail order (metal psi-titan parts, warmonger parts, drop-ship, eldar exodites and MK0 metal titan weapons).

I read the market correctly and bought tons of all these, knowing it wouldn't last. I was right.

In essence my old retail connections, even after I closed up shop, paid off handsomely in the form of discounts.

I won't spoil what I have in the works, but when its all said and done, it will be "epic" in scope.
