Personally, i was underwhelmed. They WILL kill a whole squad, each turn with grav. but they die incredibly easily - well, as easily as a 2+ armour allows. Not to mention them being a massive target, and such a big point drop.

They will kill a whole squad of something with a good armor save and out of cover. Heaven forbid you end up facing a screamer star, beaststar, or anything with a better cover save than it's armor save.

What about Chaos spawn. 180 points running at you that you cant do jack about. YOU MUST HAVE HIT AND RUN.

It might kill a unit a turn, but it's range is only 24". Seems pretty easy to swamp with a small threat range.

Yep, properly supported they may not be a deathstar, but definitely a key contributor.

I agree with this point.

IMHO the Cent Dev's aren't at their best in a Death Star Unit.
I run mine in a shooty list supported by Tigurius. I take them as IF allies so I don't need to invest points in getting them Tank Hunters. Tigurius has the ideal skill set to boost their or other unit's shooting powers. I have a Stalker, Hunter and TFC in HS so I can boost the weapon of choice I need for the job. Furthermore I have 3 minimal Tac squads for scoring support. 1 with Flakk ML manning the QG on the ADL, another LC for heavy duty and a Drop Pod Melta squad for Alpha strike. UM CT are a nice way to get Alpha Strike in. As CC counter unit I run 5 Assault Termies (3x TH SS) supported by the IF Termy Chappy with combi-flamer. At last I have a full squad of IF Tac's in a Rhino with HB, Flamer end Combi-Flamer. I also have two MM AB's for some mobile AT.

My Cent Dev's have Grav-Cannons with ML and Omniscope. Together with Tigurius they cost 455, about half the Death Star cost. They might have good use for another Cent Dev's to give them more ablative wounds but I really don't want to put too much points in one unit. So it doesn't hurt too much if that unit is gone.
I feel that CC isn't the place for Cent Dev's so it would be better not to invest in IC's to make this part better. As this IC's role would only be to protect this unit and won't get used in an offensive way. I can use my Assault Termies aggressively or for protection, that way I don't waste points as much. If needed be I can move the Chaplain out the squad and get the bonus on Assault Doctrine to get a counter charge connect.

I believe the biggest strength of Space Marines is adaptability so it's always good to have different sources of pain for your enemy. That way you can find better matches. So no, I don't think they should build a death-star but it could work.

If you let your cents get charged, you're doing it wrong. Screen them off with bikes.

The problem with all these naysayers is that they haven't yet been murderised by a dev centurion star in the hands of a competent player.

Or, you can consider a unit that doesn't need to be babysat. "Just screen them!" Or, play a unit that can operate at full potential without a screen. "Just put them in a Land Raider!" Or, use a unit that doesn't require a Land Raider.

Am I saying don't use Devastator Centurions? No. I'm just saying if you need to go to all these lengths and efforts just to make them sound good or even usable, you probably should say something like "Devastator Centurions are good...in a Land Raider...with cover...and protective units nearby." That's far more accurate than "Devastator Centurions are good! You should totally run them!".

Ironic coming from the person who says "just screen them with bikes" one post up.

Centurions aren't auto-take just because they can be screened. I'm sure a lot of stuff can murder most things. That doesn't mean they are good or amazing units.

Practical application is just as important as mathematics when determining the strength of a unit.
