Did a full cadian army, painted it and then sold it off to raise cash for a different project. Also did a full vostroyan force as well. Those minis were fantastic looking and had a cool napoleonic feel to them. Sold that force off as well for new project cash. Hahahaha...nowadays I have a full sized chaos renegades force using cadian figs converted with forge world torsos, weapons and arms. It also has 4 units of vets and a command squad made up from necromunda redemption gangers as well. The robed vets look good next to the chaotic renegades. So I won't be going back to regular IG any time soon.

Had always wanted to do a force of Praetorian guards since I've long been a British Colonials gamer, but missed their GW availability. Thought it would finally be possible when Wargames Factory released its Zulu war plastics only to find they were true 28mm scale and not compatible with GW's heroic 28mm scale figs. Nowadays there are options for head replacements from places like Victoria Miniatures, but the desire to build the army has cooled as I am happy with my chaos IG incarnation instead.

I don't know if you saw from the first page, but there's this;

Cadians with Empire Pistolier head swap and a sharp paint job = a very cool looking Praetorian-esque army.

Homebrew Imperial Guard: 1222nd Etrurian Lancers (Winged); Special Air-Assault Brigade (SAAB)
Homebrew Chaos: The Black Suns; A Medrengard Militia (think Iron Warriors-centric Blood Pact/Sons of Sek)

Saw something similar in white dwarf when they had their "6th edition is here and everyone is creating a new army" feature. Not exactly appropriately "colonial" for my tastes, but it does look good.

Tallarn all the way. Just the way they look is all kinds of cool, and all of them have awesome names, like "Captain Al'rahem," "General Akkir," or "Prince Iban Salid." I have always been a fan of Arabic and Persian cultures, as well as any other that can survive in deserts.

And there's plasma. Lots of plasma.

For those who doubt, be in awe!
Spoiler:

Did you know your "prince Iban Salid" contains "Sinbad" and "Ali"? Two famous guys from Arabian lore, and with no missing or leftover letters. I'll give GW credit: when they poach names, then can do some really cool and nifty things.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

If I had to stick to a GW approved group and had the time and money, I would choose Elysians.

Death from above and all that fun.

Praetorians would also be fun.

I love the concept behind the catachans, but the plastics for them are some of the worst minis GW has ever made. Their arms are bigger without any clothing or armor than space marines in full power armor. Blah...Would be nice if there was a company that made some similarly themed, but better proportioned figs. The catchan metals were no where near as bad as the plastics, but are hard to come by now.

A regiment of my own. World is already full of dozens of exactly same armies, so why not to create new ones? Besides, it adds more colour to the fields of war besides just same boring cannon fodder and blood.

Elysians, I always wanted an army when the other guys are all like, sat down drinking and stuff, and then everyone's all like 'aah oh my god' and it's like *PEW PEW PEW* and then there's like Elysians everywhere and everyone's all like 'woah they're so cool and handsome' and then we win :3 Getting Elysians for Christmas, wooo

I'd go for a radical Inquisitor's personal army.

Psykers based on the Empire Flagellant models from Fantasy, Penal Legionnaires, Commissars, Storm Troopers, Hive Gangers, rogue Tech Priests, unsanctioned Xenos tech and all manners of craziness.

Praetorians. No doubt. Probably use Warlord Games Anglo-Zulu War Brits as a basis.

If I were to have the disposable income to spend on a guard army and was not allowed to spend it on sensible things, Vostroyans all the way. Those hats, man XD

The Seraphs of Thunder: a homebrew, almost entirely converted successor Deathwing. And also some Orks. And whatever else I have lying around.

Only problem with using 28mm historicals for IG is that they are true 28mm and look positively tiny next to GW's heroic 28mm scale figures. Was planning to do something similar with the wargames factory zulu war brits and had to drop the project. :\

I have a mixture of Catachan and Cadian models painted in a desert camo scheme. looks pretty boss now I just need to finish them..

Edit:
Just realised that wasn't the question. I play mine as a mixed PDF assisting the Imperial Fists. Just calling them Desert Dogs.

I believe what I am doing is called resurrecting an old post but I honestly think what i have to say is in line with this thread so judge as you will
Like Tigramans I have gone with the option of non-standard regiment. In my case, to make sense of the size of my true 28mm forces, I am using purely ashigaru and samurai as found on wargames factory. My excuse for their size is due to them being from a smaller genetic strain of human (Asian), and in one move i solve several problems, while creating only 1: What the heck to use for las or auto guns? Since the darn arquebus they carry are TINY

I like to make up my own regiment. But if the Vostroyans would be in plastic, I would start them in the blink of an eye.
Also, I detect necromancy. Heresy!
You should make a new thread instead.
