Counters, table and terrain features, construction or prefab. I have a blank canvas of a table. Inspire me my fellow dakkaites. Anything related will be appreciated as well. Automatically Appended Next Post: Its exclusively a 40k table

Beer-Holder. The most definitely most important detail on a gaming table.
On a serious note:
I really prefer tables that have the possibility to store dead or reserved units and an area where you can safely roll dice.

- At least two ruins. I find most hills aren't tall enough for either force's stationary shooting units. And ruins are awesome.
- Craters and/or patches of grass and GW-style trees. Either works (I like craters personally) to break up what is otherwise boring gaming mat/baseboard.
- Folding legs. That way, you can park it against a wall by itself, and you don't need another table to put it on.
All my humble opinion, of course.

Extra space is nice. A 4'x8' gives you an extra foot on either side to store reserves and/or casualties. Or extra room for apoc games.
At least one shelf beneath it. For storage or either unused terrain, or cases. If you are going all-out some drawers would be nice. Or pull-out, felt lined, rolling boxes, extra surfaces to hold books, lists, or drinks, etc.
Not strictly part of the table, but some nice bar stools. Not all of us have young knees anymore. Just one game is fine, but if I'm doing a tournament and don't get enough time sitting down, I'll feel it for the rest of the week.
If you are doing a theme board, make sure it is balanced with features that you build in, and leave enough room to swap some extras around to liven things up.

Terrain.
No, more than that. Unless you're playing on an Agri-World there is no reason to make that table positively thick with terrain. It makes for much more balanced and better games in general that way.
It doesn't have to be Cities of Death level, but it does need to keep you from draw clear line of sight without some kind of cover all the way across the table in any direction I find.
That said some "gutter space" for books, drinks, food, models, ect on the sides is very handy.

Definitely space around the table, and space underneath (doesn't have to be shelves) to put bags and boxes and cases and whatnot.
Somewhere to roll the metric fuckton of dice I have to use as a Tyranid player is nice, too...

On terrain density:
The rules tell us each 2x2 section should have 1-3 pieces. So to outfit a 4x6 table, you should have 18 pieces to terrain to choose from. Now the odds of maxing out every section is low, but by having the max amount of themed terrain you offer choices when setting up. And max terrain for a 4x6 is still above average for a 4x8, so if you go for a larger table, your should still get good coverage.

Some thoughts:
1) The cup holders is somewhat not a joke, anything to cut down on coffee rings and spills is worthwhile: any spills on a graveled surface would need painting... So tables on the side or actual cup holders hanging off the side.
2) A friend jazzed up some dice towers to look like buildings and processing plants so contained the ungodly number of Ork dice and kept the stray dice in check. Good for the "natural rolling" problems and makes it all look nice for pictures.
3) The surface to be prepared to work with the terrain you plan to use: flat surface or uneven in select spots and where?, graveled, some painted pattern or cloth?, good for 40k and X-wing? My table is painted with terrain patterns (40k) so I can still slap down some felt to play X-wing for instance.
4) (I know 3...) Lighting. Then more over the table. Good for pictures and less eyestrain especially when the experimental stealth black primed army is fielded.

Exactly. The problem I see is people only putting 1 small peice of terrain in a location. If you only roll a "1" for a square you should be putting something fairly sizable down to make up for it. Like a multi-story ruins.

Having played on one of their tables that a friend owns, I must agree with this statement. Kick ass table.
However, the delivery time is inexcusable. 11 months (or longer) is far too long.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I second (or third) the need for plenty of terrain...alot of the proposed rules and issues that people have with the game could be resolved by simply putting more terrain on the table.

Hopefully, my "terrain to build box's" will give you some inspiration on stuff to build,... Iv'e been meaning to spend a day just making terrain but as it's coming into summer now my "spare time" is in the garden.
Different set's/types of stuff.
Line of sight blocking terrain.. both large and small.
ruins of (old factory's/ buildings) or intact buildings (my brother has made a table like a old farm with farm house, big shed, out house, wind mill, fences and crops etc..
area terrain stuff like swamps/crops or rocky ground...
small themed stuff ...(outhouse)
After having a quick look through my box's I think i'm going to build a "mining" themed table.
