well, just picked up the latest wave from the FLGS,
model wize,
A little disappointing, my 4th wing battle ship had a fairly large area of dried out glue by one of the engines, and the two engines were on at odd angles. Its a really big ship, going to clean off all the flash lines and dried glue blobs, study up on the ships detail from the show and make it match my jem hadar attack ships. THen I will be happy!
TBH I have really high model standards though... lots of people could care less and just pop em out of the box and play, which is 100% ok
game wize:
MMMMMMMM... so many good and usefull cards in here... the ship is great, makes for a lot of new options for the dominion for sure, and jem hadar in specifc (yay more then ONE ship!)
the 4 attack polaron beam that ignores shields will be interesting, so will the extra action for another jem hadar ship! also, ketracel white! finally!
jem hadar were starting to get antsy...

They generally go for a little more unpunched, but assuming it's in good shape you should still get a decent price for it.

Ok, going by the averages on ebay, is $60 for both plus shipping sound fair?
Would you pay more if they were repainted or less? Was thinking about repainting the Laerst and the Fighters to make them look more detailed.
EDIT: $50???

Ok, is it just me, or is the Admin of the Attack Wing Facebook page really, really interested in Dividing people?
He posted a pretty blatant post meant to incite anger towards people who play by the rules and mix faction cards...
My response? Play Casual if you don't like it, don't go to the OP events if it bothers you that much.
I seriously just DISLIKE it when someone cries and whines about things not being "pure."
If you want that OP ship, you're gonna have to get competitive, when market demand for each of these ships causes them to be $60 - $80 each online because of their rarity AND their power levels, don't expect to win them without going through a fight.
I just can't believe people are flocking to that page, the Admin is clearly trying to divide the fanbase.

I can see it both ways. It is really up to the TO. Page 21 of the rule book states
"If all players agree, then each player may play with ships from multiple factions. Players may even combine captains and upgrades from multiple factions on the same ship if they are willing to pay the faction penalty..."
Mixing factions has always been an optional rule. In most tournament settings optional rules are up to the TO. By the rules TOs can even make you play pure fleets.
Like I said I can see it both ways. I usually mix it up, but if you are playing in an area where things are geeting out hand then I could understand why a TO would put the breaks on.
One place I play does 2 OPs a month and next OP the store owner said we are doing one pure and one where you can mix it up. Personally look forward to the challenge.

$50 is definitely a fair price. However I think the extra for shipping and the import charges we get hit with these days puts it out of my reach
thanks anyway, but I think selling within North America on ebay is probably best

Hay folks,
It’s been a while since I shared my fleets, so I thought I would update a little since,
Reinforcements arrived today!!
My Dominion fleet has grown more than I originally expected to 25 ships.
Fighting for the Founders we have 2 Battleships, 4 attack ships, 3 Keldon Class, 7 Galor Class, 3 Hideki Squads, 6 Breen Cruisers, and 26 of everyone’s favorite the OWPs. We may do a battle report using the entire fleet for the real battle of Chin’Taka
Not to be out done the mighty United Federation of Planets is looking strong these days.
On patrol in the Alpha Quadrant we have, 2 Galaxy class, 1 Intrepid (using Galaxy rules until April), 2 Constitution (had to replace w/michromachines), 5 Nebula Class, 3 Defiant Class, 3 Excelsior Class, 2 Miranda Class, 2 Nova Class, and 2 Oberth Class (using Miranda rules)

I was never was a fan of mixxing as an optional rule. Because, one of the first ships for retail was the Reliant coming with an independent faction Khan. You also had Cyrano Jones with the D7 and later Kira with the Defiant (granted you don't pay a penalty on Fed ships, but she’s still considered Bajoran Faction upgrade). Being an optional rule dependent on all parties involved with that particular game agreeing to it, can and does limit the use of these upgrades.
As for the Facebook group, I enjoy it for the random Attack Wing related stories and articles pulled from all over the interwebs. Half of the discussions seem to be gripes about how competitive "competitive play" actually is. You're fighting for a prize; not trying to create some sort of narrative campaign.

Most venues I have read about make an exception for the independent cards, because for now we have no ships for them. However there are a few on the way with the Tholian & Gorn ships. The Vulcan ships will probably be independent too. I like the Equinox. It is cheap, good dial and has a tech slot. It can do white 2 turns which is important for the federation. The arc is not as good as the Reliant, but I think the tech slot makes up for that. Automatically Appended Next Post:
IMPORTANT!!
Wizkids just announced that the Tholian Web mini OP release has been delayed until April 30th.
There is no word if this will push back the other OPs or if we will be playing the Tholian Web & The Arena in May.
Though a slight silver lining to this is we will have all of April to play the missions that come with the ships and 2-3 weeks to play around with the wave 4 ships before the next OP starts. Plus if the post the rules online in April we will have a whole month to practice

Originally the Tholian Web was supposed to be a one month OP for April and the Arena was for May, followed up by the Collective to start in June and run until December. It looks as though wizkids is leaving it up to TOs to work out new scheduling.

I tried getting into Attack Wing. I finally found a copy of the starter set. Ok, not bad, X-wing minis are way better looking.
Went to the store to pick up some ships for AW. Picked up the Enterprise (TOS) and saw the Exquinox and gagged. My god they look horrible and cheap. Maybe I was use to the great quality of X-wing but Star Trek just look soooo bad.
I know I pay way to much for GW stuff, but I just couldn't pay a mere $15 for this crap. I mean this money could have gone to X-wing , but I finally have everything I want till the new minis come out.
So I guess my question is, how do you get into AW knowing the company is making very poor quality minis. Do you basically buy them for the stat cards and what not first and swallow the bitter pill what the minis are. Do you repaint them?
I really want to start up AW, but the quality of the minis are just bad. How can I make AW more appetizing for me to get into?

Ok, firstly, the Nova Class is actually one of their better sculpts, At least a LOT better than the Charm Bracelet Enterprise.
Secondly, you have to be a fan of Star Trek to forgive the quality of the models. I don't like it, but I like Star Trek, so I put up with it.
Sure, X wing has better models, but good luck finding the good models to be competitive with it!!! With FFG's GLACIAL release schedule, Attack wing has ALREADY overtaken them in terms of number of ships released.

personally, I am a bit miffed that the micro machines I purchased when I was ten are better quality (of build and of paint) at a better scale...
I just repaint it all anyways... Ive actually puttied/carved/ect into a lot of these models to fix the cracks/mouldlines/details.
I dont think the xwing stuff is much better though, that all gets repainted around here too for the most part.

I use to love Star Trek. My problem is, I don't want another GW, keep rewarding them for something we find fault with.
I just found some of my old Star Trek minis form 15 years ago. Maybe I can use them. Buy the packs for the cards and use my old minis. Well basically toys but not sure what else to call them.
Thanks guys for the comments. Please keep them coming. What ships do you like, what do you like to use and why?

I think its a little unfair to compare Wizkids to GW. Wizkids gives you stuff for free, ships, terrain, resources, GW doesn't do anything even cloase. Nothing is free from GW past the demo model. Wizkids is also very responsive to the community. When people were upset about the Preatus not having a minefield token they gave us an extra one in the Gal Gathong.
As for the models, this is a topic I generally do not discuss online, but I will divert briefly on it. Its a matter of taste. Many people, far more that the internet would have you believe are perfectly happy with the models. Some are not, I play in a several OPs a month and go to AttackmWing night at the local shop. I haven't heard any AW players complain openly about models since month 2. The only people who do complain at my local stores are the hard core X-wing players and they are not buying AW anyway. But it is a matter of taste if you like them fine, if not fine. However just because they do not conform to your individual taste doesn't mean there is a "fault" with wizkids.

I am now in possession of my DS9. Things are getting competitive at 401 Games in Toronto! I played a 3 ship Klingon fleet in the final OP and got beat hard in the championship match against a two ship Klingon build. There was ONE measurement that was a bit too close to call, and I didn't get the judge to do the measuring. I think in the future I probably will get the judge to measure critical moves, but I like the guy I was playing against and wasn't too upset that he was able to Reverse 3 past two of my ships to get the crunch on me. I was sensor echoing everywhere all night. I was ahead on points as well, so I wasn't too upset to miss out on the Bajoran ship.
To the individual with the sculpt/quality issues- I have plenty of issues with the quality of the paintjobs and the quality of the cards. I've repainted my ships (you can find the pics in my previous posts) and they look great after a wash and some highlights. The SCULPTS I have no issue with. They are generally quite good sculpts- they aren't fiddly and they represent the thing they're supposed to be quite nicely. There are some with issues about bridge placement on certain ships, but those issues dive deep down the rabbit hole. If they made the paintjobs a bit better, and brightened up the cards, I'd be very happy. I like X-Wing, I really like Attack Wing. No need to choose between the two unless you're strapped for cash. If you are, you should pick based on two factors, ranked in my subjective order:
1. Which background appeals to you more?
2. What is the local scene like/how likely are you to get games in?

The Micro Machines Excelsior, while on the large-ish size, is light years better than the WizKids model. Shapeways.com also has a good 3d substiture, look for "1/7000 Great Experiment".

Thanks Mr Baldrick.
Wizkids seems to be throwing a lot into this game, they have a good customer service dept, and seem to really support the community. I have only heard good things about their customer service dept. Personally I have only had to contact them once and they responded quickly amd shipped out a replacement in a couple weeks.
For value consider what you get for you money at OP events. At my local stores we buy a shipmto play. So our $15 gest us ship, the participation resource, a set of map tokens, and if you win a priz ship. A chance for 4 things on a $15 dollar investment is pretty good. Also consider that ship is a fully playable unit, in something like warhammer you don't get much for 15 bucks
Personally I like the scupls a lot and the paint jobs, for the most part. When I started playing I decided I was not painting anything. After 20 years of painting warhammer I wanted to open the pack and play. However i have seen some others do some amazing repaints, Gordash for one has great looking stuff. We have a guy at my local store that has purple klinons, I know, but they blow the pants off of any thing for sale from WK or FFG. So its all about taste and what you want to do with it.
We are glad to have another voice here in our 2 little threads, welcome and happy flying
-Gordash congrats on your victory , if anyone else has any victory or good time stories please share and keep the threads growing.

yeah, the aesthetics are really a total non issue,
takes me far longer to get other types of models off the sprue, cleaned, assembled, primed, and painted,
then it does for me to just clean/patch the wizkids stuff and repaint it. And when it is done, its looks pretty good!
the game is lots of fun, and wizkids supports it well!
I really hope the OP never ends, it is just so much fun and really drives participation and sales im sure

How do you guys play your game? Do you play to win or it's fun to mix and match cards, or do you play fluffily, so only Kirk with TOS Enterprise, Picard on Enterprise D only.
What is with DS9? Is it an actual mini with rules to play with o rust something for a tourney? Still confused on that one.
Me and my son had a game. It was fun. Just played with basic rules and had a blast. I think the ruleset fits Star Trek better than Xwing. It actually feels moving capital ships instead of small fighters.
I want to try and make a battle between Kirk and the Romulan ship. Forget the name. The one with Spocks father as Romulan captain. Balance of Terror I think it was called. Is there rules for this, if not, how can I make them to play this scenario.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.
Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?
Auticus wrote: Or in summation: its ok to exploit shoddy points because those are rules and gamers exist to find rules loopholes (they are still "legal"), but if the same force can be composed without structure, it emotionally feels "wrong". |
