Wait, where's the battlecruiser's movement dial? I haven't seen that anywhere.

Could you post it here? I don't like getting on BGG, it's too difficult to navigate.

Well the Soong came out today, and it looks like WizKids' answer for Borg was to make it more tedious for them to use their own crew. The ship itself has a regular movement dial and no 360 arc. The statline appears lackluster compared to the Sphere/Cube (then again, what doesn't?). Most of the new cards don't seem of much use for Borg ships, aside from Transwarp Conduit which appears to be absolutely broken. A question for you guys (since I don't have my rulebook on hand): All of the new crew cards have both the Borg faction symbol and the independent symbol. What does this mean in terms of other factions using them?

It means that they are dual faction cards and can be put on either Borg or Independent ships without paying a faction penalty.

So, I got my Enterprise yesterday, and it didn't come with the Movement Dial, the ship card that goes on the base, etc. I got a duplicate of the Captain/Admiral pips sprue... :/
And it's not on the Wizkids replacements ordering site yet either... what do I do? I've emailed them, but haven't heard back, what with the holiday and all.

That's a bummer man. It's a shame but I don't think there is anything you can do until its in the replacement system. I was missing a Cold Storage from one of Rav Larests and they never responded to my emails. They only seem to respond to problems sent into the system, and OP prizes are not in there either.
Tho only other solution is to buy another one and make a copy of the ship tag for the missing one.

Well, looks like Mrs S and i will be buying this game and learning it together as we both enjoy ST and SW but prefer Trek and really like the idea of the cards for the personalities on board.
Mrs S has chosen The Dominion, liking the range of ships, the breen and jem hadar as races and Weyoun as a character, I've chosen the Romulans due to my ongoing love affair with the Warbird and the overall look of the rest of the range.
We are setting ourselves up with rules of keeping race specific fleets to begin with, perhaps adding one or two 'oddball' ships in later (because Ferengi...) and also of restricting ourselves to TNG ships onwards rather than mixing in old series ships.
We are also looking into sourcing some other models to add to our fleets, especially given how small the D'Deridex ship is in the range and how off several ships' scale is in this. My thoughts are to keep the original Wizzkids ships for tournament play etc in the future, but have home fleets for aesthetics and modelling/painting. I am also considering sourcing and converting several of the heroclix ships to the range, to bulk up the fleets quickly.
Can you give us any pointers to learning, handy tips, starter fleets etc for this? After several abortive attempts to learn 40k, wife is keen to get into something not requiring a library of supplements to carry about and learn.

Too bad because the Gal'gathong has a really nice ability and the Enterprise era Bird of Prey comes with cloaked mines and Valdore, a good captain.
Good luck getting the Ferengi right now though. There's only one ship and that was a prize ship. You could go the eBay route but that will be EXPENSIVE. I am really hoping they release them later.

This is a nice site to use for fleet building:
[url]http://www.dracossoftware.com/STAWHome.html/url]
I'm not an expert player by any means but this is what I notice about these two factions:
For Romulans, you definitely want to be sneaky; cloak and try to outmaneuver your opponent. Use sensor echo to get out of their arcs (or make it so that you are at range three for them). Try to get in their flanks so that you can hit them but they can't hit you. Don't be afraid to disengage if things aren't going well for you. It'll make for a longer game but try to make it that when you attack, it is advantageous for you.
For the Dominion, your big ships steer like a pregnant whale. The Cardassian ships have a nice 180 degree firing arc though. Go slowly with them and keep your opponent in front of you for as long as possible. The Koranak has the only secondary weapon that gives you 360 shots (dorsal weapons array). Use that.
I don't have the Jem'hadar Battle Cruiser yet but I think it is much more maneuverable; I think it actually has a come about on its dial! You definitely want to get that.
The smaller ships have some nifty abilities, like the Gor Portas and its Energy Dissipator. I would use them to cover the flanks of your big ships. Or throw them ahead to weaken the enemy and have your big ships clean up.
Hope that helps!

Perhaps, perhaps...
Hmmm, I could go the route of sourcing some shapeways 'romulan styled' ships to replace the actual models for those ships and simply use the cards and stats.
That might appease my god of OCD.
Shame about the ferengi ship, guess they will be releasing them eventually, bit hard to leave out Quark, Rom, Nog and the Nagus...

Just do what I do and pretend the Preatus ism TNG era ship, it is very similar in style to the D'Deridex and looks nothing like anything from the Enterprise era. I read somewhere that there was fan speculation that the the Romulan birds of prey seen in "Mine Field" were actually 24th century ships that were part of the whole temporal cold war thing, and producers would never confirm or deny the idea. This could actually fit in because the Preatus style ships are nothing like what was described in the "Balance of Terror" as being used during the Earth Romulan war.
No matter how you look at it the Preatus is a great looking ship and worth picking up.

cloaked mines. Dominion are my fleet of choice, I'm a big fan. They have a nice mix of big tanks and tiny ships from the J'h, interesting fire arcs from the Cardies and weird mechanics for the breen. If you can get yourself a Rav Laerst promo from eBay for not silly money, it's a worthy addition. Incidentally, I'm with you about ship scale: the battleship is about half the size it should be, and the attack ships roughly double - although for them, Necron Scarabs are about the right size, and physically very similar. My fleet, as it stands:

Hey gang looks like Chris Guild is back from vacation and answering questions in the FAQ over on BGG. So for any of you that were wondering, you will be able to use Weyou, Li Nalis, Romulan Centurion and the like to protect your ship during Collective OP1.
From Mr. Guild
"The term "remove from the game" is intended to be a discard in this case, so therefore any cards, such as Weyoun, Li'Nalas and Centurion, would work against it.Â
Remember, any cards that are discarded by the BCT are not counted as part of your surviving fleet, but cards that are discarded by you to use their text ability (such as Li'Nalas and Centurion) are placed under your ship and counted as part of your surviving fleet. "

I finally got my custom Borg acrylics in the mail today, so I figured I'd post em up here. They're not painted yet, so I didn't bother picturing all of them, but I should have them done by tomorrow.
While I was at it, I took a picture of the Borg Fleet that is currently being repainted. Hoping to have them done by the end of next week, then I can start working on the LEDs.
Also, a friend and I are planning a big 700 point game in the next week (Pure faction Klingons vs Pure faction Borg), so hopefully I'll be throwing up a recap of that in the near future.
They look a bit odd since the paper is still on them, but I'll post new pics once they're done.
Only 3 ships started, the others are still just primed or wearing factory paint.

Finally got my Enterprise and the Romulan Bird of Prey.
Is there a scenario or rules for Balance of Terror? I want to play it with my son, so can anyone give me a link if there is one?
Thanks.

The Balance of Terror scenario comes with the Gal Gothong/Romulan bird of prey expansion. Its called "Destroy the Outposts". It is a lot of fun and each player has s 45 point build.

Before I go further with this game, reading up here and elsewhere, am I going to find that many strong ships and cards are 'event prizes' or something and end up spending daft money on ebay for rare ships or a single card?
I'm a tabletop wargamer and don't want to get into a MtG style game, I like a tactical game with a reasonable fleet of models on the table rather than a stack of funky combo cards stacking up to make some horribly powerful deck.
There isn't a gaming community near me playing this, I don't want to get into hardcore tournaments.

There are some nice cards/ship that are event prizes but at the same time, you don't absolutely need them, unless you are a completionist. You can make do without them, especially if you don't want go hardcore into tournaments.

You do not need any of the expensive prize ships to get the most out of the game (they aren't even important for many competitive builds in the current meta). It's unfortunate that a couple of the smaller factions (Vulcans, Bajorans, and Ferengi) have prize ships, because it means that you need the those ships in order to flesh out a complete fleet for those factions. That said, the Federation, Borg, Klingons, Dominion, and Romulans can all field very capable fleets without ever putting any of the prize ships on the table. Don't worry, the game isn't a scam to get you to buy rares off of eBay.

This is good to hear. I hope they do make at least the ferengi into a 'whole faction'. I'm not really sure how they could build a faction from any of the races in Voyager (except the kazon, who could only be useful in a huge swarm due to the rubbish nature of their tech).
If they are starting to dry up on faction ships from the series, then certainly games like 'birth of the federation' had tons of other ships they could add and the licensing for them should be tiny.

Urgh... I like my fleets pure or at least viable allies and ship pure... Kazon taking on and defeating Alpha Quadrant powers is... inconceivable! There is one ship type only for most all the races Voyager meets, are we to be overwhelmed by single example ships everywhere? It won't look much like star trek any more, I really do hope they expand into other sources than the tv shows for the game's ranges'.
Son'a would be cool.
They allied with the Dominion during the war, perhaps as part of the dominion faction in game then yes?
