These look quite lovely. The wizard in red and black with gold stripes reminds me of the villain in the Lone Wolf books. I wonder how they would look next to the Warhammer mage set. Maybe they could serve as apprentices or lower-level mages compared to the baroque excess of higher-level magicians, as others have said.
Not to derail the thread about Frostgrave, @highlord tamburlaine
titan forge http://titan-forge.com/92-dragon-empire has some very nice samurai fantasy troops with cool oni ogre miniatures.

The Oathmark sprues are compatible? For some reason, I was under the impression that they were slightly smaller...
The size and joints are the same (at least for those I tried). I kitbashed Oathmark Human Infantry with Frostrgrave Soldiers 1 and Cultist bits to make some Rangers of Shadow Deep companions, and it worked great.

I wasn't impressed when I first saw the sprues. The wizards looked like they were going to be too similar.
Those painted minis have really changed my mind.
Looks like another great Frostgrave kit.

The Frostgrave plastic wizards are super super boring. Seems like a lot was sacrificed for total modularity. I guess if you need a squad of wizards hanging around talking about stuff, this kit is for you.

I find thats true for all of Frostgrave kits.
Modular and "Boring" kits for more mundane settings. Thats why I love them (I would love them much more if they where more compatible in scale with most fantasy lines)

But these seem particularly dull, even compared to the other frostgrave releases. Especially since your wizard is the main character. Looks like some interesting head options, but everything else is extremely uninteresting.

No spell effects, burning swords, tablets with strange runes, or weapons inscribed with sigils. Hardly even any interesting headwear. As far as I am concerned they reached the highwater mark with their cultists.
However, I am a big fan of open hands, so I'll probably still buy a set!

That is actually a selling point to me. Starting level characters in most fantasy games are not going to have all that magic stuff, and it almost never lines up with the magical loot your character will end up with.
I can make a mundane sword magical with some hot glue if needed or sculpt some tablets with runes if my character ever actually finds any.

Might wanna check out Wizkid's unpainted D&D and Pathfinder minis. They're pretty sharp, come primed with Vallejo and you get a blister with basically a level 1 and a level 10 version of the same character for $5. Spellcasters even have translucent spell effects.

Aren't starting characters what the Fireforge Peasants box is for? They'll also fit better with other fantasy lines with more exciting leveled up characters.

well, to be honest there are plenty of options for overdramatic clowns. When i started playing frostgrave, or when i was looking for mini for my stoic dnd wizard, it was really hard to find something other than a walking christmas tree. I really like those "mundane" wizards. Feels more "realistic" (all things considered)

I love these sculpts. They are going to paint up nicely, as they are not covered in over-detailed "bling." I love my AoS models, but for a game we want to get on the table fast and allow to evolve I'm all about the Frostgrave sculpts.

These guys would also make a very useful band of traveling actors, or local alcoholics auditioning for a Shakespeare play.
Very difficult to find other suitable miniatures with so many gesturing hands and bottles of grandpa's cough medicine.
I mean look at the guy with the owl, I can practically hear the scary story he is telling. And the guy reading from the script with occasional draughts of liquid courage.

Oh, you (probably) meant wizard miniatures. Outside of GW, I can't think of very many dedicated multi-optioned plastic wizard sets at all. Yes, yes, Ring of Rule, but those wizards are hardly decorous.

Huh? Mundane wizards are the easiest minis in the world to convert. Take a boring spearman, snip the tip, add a skull or orb, and you've got a humble wizard who just wants to fit in with his countrymen.

Yes, You can convert anything out of anything. Be it "just a guy", "ork looted X" or "modern fashion show wizard". Still it's nice to have something redy to go out of the box. The more options out there, the better.

I'm reading all the Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser stuff right now, so, like, it's really awesome, unlike these wizards, who are background extras in a low budget BBC series from the 1970's only released on Betamax.

Which Fafhrd story do you recommend most? I've read two of their stories--the first one and the one with the iceberg--and found them tedious.
And you're making me more interested in these minis!
They will make great vessels or conversion bits the way chips are vessels for guac and salsa.

I'm reading them in order as presented in the Swords series; Swords and Deviltry was first, and I think was a little boring due to being all prequel stuff, with the exception of Ill Met in Lankhmar, which was stupendous. I just finished Swords Against Death which was great overall (and it's incredibly apparent how much Geedubs swiped from Leiber to stir into the mixing pot of Elric and other weird 60's fantasy for the Warhammer Old World). Swords in the Mist coming up next!
