Maybe it was the fact that it was based in a different time period than the 20th/21st century. Wouldn't you think that a game about the Phoenician conquest of the Mediterranean would be worthy of notice before you found out that it has nothing to do with ship-to-ship combat?

Players control Marius using the controller, while simultaneously controlling his legion through Kinect voice commands.
Oh, this should be fun to watch...I need to get some pop corn for this
At least thats one non orwellian use for the device .

I don't know how someone hasn't made something like this, what with all the murderings going on. I would totally be behind that.

There was a capcom game set in Rome. One character was a gladiator the other was a sneaky nobleman who wasn't able to fight. Something about the game wasn't very fun though and of course back then game stories were still mostly crap. Still the art was great and it was actually, visually, pretty darn accurate.
Playing as a young senator in the 50 or so years before the fall of the Republic would make for a fantastic game. Just simply trying to survive all the great purges that happened, then moving on to trying to grasp for as much power as you can in the ensuing power vacuums. Helping or hindering the Great names of the age. Rigging elections and bribing officials could be especially fun.
Of course the final scene would have to be your character, by now an old man, an Ancient in the senate, walking up to the Man who has Just proclaimed himself 'Dictator for life', Ripping the toga from his shoulders with uncharacteristic strength , then drawing your knife. Beginning yet another cycle of violence but one you knew you couldn't survive.
EDIT: Just watched the latest PR video for Ryse and although it still looks distinctly Last Gen mechanically. It at least looks alot more solid and fluid, however for all i know it still controls like dog poo like alot of critics said at E3.

Maybe but the vanilla game suffers from deus ex issues:
You activate super speed and you can sprint 10 meters before you are out of energy. Want to sneak up a korean and punch him with super punch? You can't because by the time you have snuck up on him you are out of energy.

This must be a joke right? Some random 4chan comment?
Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

The Kinetic Voice Commands thing is straight from wikipedia.
Rashid Sayed: Coming back to Kinect Commands. Can you please explain the different types of commands I can issue to my troops?
Mike Read: The Kinect component of Ryse is focused around voice commands to issue support orders. We tested a number of different things including gestures, but it was something that just didn’t feel natural in the end. Players will have the option of either calling out the commands or pressing the RB on the controller to issue them. One of the things that you can do was highlighted in the E3 demo when you issue orders for Archer support and firing the catapult at the end of the level.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Do you see what happens, Gatlas, when you use one of my history class assignments as a forum post?
You make people tear the last shred of hope I have from me. With nothing more than a video.

Don't worry, 'Nidsnik. There are plenty of games which don't follow that failure of a concept. Though admittedly, AAA games tend to.

Reminds me of when I experimented what would happen in FIFA if I pressed no buttons at all for an entire match - all I did was pass out whenever the keeper had the ball.
My AI controlled-players still managed to consistantly tackle for the ball, and the enemy team wasn't capable of scoring a single goal. gak plays itself.
It wasn't, and I didn't until I actually looked at the game. You know me, why would you assume that?

I appreciate that you are trying to console me, but have you ever seen a concept for a game executed so poorly that you look everywhere else for places it was done better, then find out that any games that fit that concept were made 10-20 years ago and there's no way you can get them, or even if you could, it was so outdated that you don't feel comfortable playing it? Probably not, because that's a bit specific, but that's how I feel right now.

Gratuitous slow-mo is already annoying, but gratuitous slow-mo while the rest of the world moves at regular speed is just bizarre.

Yeah, I'm not getting any games that demand I use voice while I play. Thin walls and loud games do not get along very well.

Well, to be honest, if this game wanted to really portray a Roman soldier in the legions fighting, then all you'll be hearing is your Centurion shouting "stab low" in Latin while you hide behind your shield and repeatedly jab a German's genitals with your gladius between the cracks in the shield wall. What fun. Even better - Ryse: Son of Sparta! Can't wait for that! Now you can stab a spear into a Persian's genitals!
The armour looks absolutely ridiculous, the concept of the combat looks ridiculous (I mean, the average Roman soldier would have been mediocre when fighting one-on-one with a barbarian who has been using swords since the age of 5, let alone fighting two - why do you think they fethed up at Teutoburg?) and even the name of the damn game is ridiculous.

Don't forget the face, the main exercise in the Roman 'Martial art' (for want of a better term) was shield bash, stab high, stab low. A gladius was a maiming weapon, historians have described it as a 'diplomatic' weapon, it left many wounded but was relatively non-lethal, there were likely plenty of new Auxiliaries with gladius wounds!
