From the newsletter today:

40K GT and Invitational missions will be drawn from the mission catalog, a sample tournament packet of which can be found at 40K GT and Invitational Primer/Sample Mission Pack.  The NOVA Open is heavily involved in the crafting and revision process of the mission packet.   Look up a couple posts for the link.

The NOVA Open 40K GT & Invitational will also be implementing the following army construction rules, provided now to enable adequate time for questions and army prep:

All armies may be crafted from up to 2 sources, with a source being:
 - Official Codices and Codex Supplements (including Codex: Imperial Knights)
 - Unit Formation Datasheets (i.e., the Tyranid Skyblight Formation)

Characters  Made Available to Certain Codices via Datasheets (presently Cypher and Belakor) do not count as a source (And thus can be taken as an add-on to a selected Codex without taking up one of the two source limit)

This rules decision was made after much discussion, play testing, peer review, community observation, conversation among close TOs, and for the purpose of an easy and readily preparation-friendly GT/Invitational experience, while also safely allowing the many new units and codices GW is adding to the game (i.e., Imperial Knights).

The updated mainstream formation rules from Stronghold Assault will be used, but not the new fortifications presented in Stronghold Assault.

We will not use Escalation.

Forgeworld models are legal in all events, provided they follow the modeling guidelines presented within the NOVA FAQ and rules primers.

Forge World rules will be allowed in the Team Tournament and Narrative Warlords and Nightfighters events, but not the Invitational/GT.

We encourage play testing and request feedback:  write novaopen@gmail.com or participate in discussions on Whiskey&40K.

Sounds great! I'm really glad that after much consideration you guys elected to go the 2-source route

Good question. I know it's kinda fuzzy and intent based to allow it like adepticon did, but I'm not sure it permits any worse builds, nor do I perceive people complaining about seer council getting hit and run from baharroth instead of Baron "I kill seers for fun in the fluff yet somehow now I'm best buds with them all" Sathonyx.

Let me consult. Meanwhile, inputs on that question welcome.

Thanks Steve G, I'd like to maintain the precedent that NOVA is designed explicitly to address community needs and feedback, and not simply the internalized gut guess of a TO and his closest cronies.

If allowed, Alex, it would definitely be two sources. Generally we'll be ruling that if it uses two detachments, it's two sources, creative wordsmithing be darned (not that you attempted any, but we've gotten some creative sm + allied chapter + inquisitor arguments).

Maybe '2 detachments' is a less ambiguous way of wording it? It seems the rules you've stated are..

- maximum 2 detachments, one must be primary
- no lords of war detachments
- formations are a detachment
- stronghold assault is valid for updated rules, but not new units

That would cover everything, including the Cypher/Belakor stuff & the Dataslate formations, and rules out any creative Inquisitor arguments. Is that right?

It seems confusing to say that Farsight with Iyanden allies is 2 sources, when there are definitely 4 books being used.

Good revisions and clarifications, Ian!

We're leaning yes on Iyanden.

Y'all need to register pronto! It's not too long before weekend badge rates hike, and we're running out of space and rooms faster than ever. Please note nearly every event sold out last year, with a twenty person 40k GT wait overage. Do not drag your feet if you're among those attending.

Example, hotel booking rates compared to last year (higher rate is 2014). Get on it! Much as I try, I can't create new space for games or hotel rooms from thin air.

For the sky blight formation are you ruling that gargoyles holding an objective can not be contested? I've heard it can go either way although do not own the dataslate so am not sure why.

Also, reading the packet, it says objectives are infinitely tall?

Does that mean if the objective is next to a ruin and my unit is on the top floor I can claim it buy measuring 3in horizontally from the top floor?

Do objectives block LoS?

Warhammer Fantasy has not been dropped. It's under new management by Steven Gant and we're quite excited about it. We had some bumps in the road with Fantasy last year and are explicitly working to address them - from building a stronger relationship with the event lead to providing superior terrain (here's some sneak photos of some building designs for this year's event: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-XaiBt4KLMps/UeLMQhLkzoI/AAAAAAAAFwg/T8QivvMbvuo/s1600/Painting+4.JPG)

The scoring system will be streamlined to a more traditional one to the average Fantasy GT goer, participation will contribute to Master's Qualification, and we're starting with an initial offering of 32 players (though Steve thinks we'll end up firing up to 64). More information can be found on the website, and Steve should have a primer for us to pop up within the next week or two (sorry for the delay on that - we've taken careful time making sure we have just the right lead this year to ensure an awesome experience for our attendees).

So do we have any info about the Fantasy side of things? I have not seen anything posted about it and we are almost in may...

Steve Gant's been running the fantasy side, answering questions as they come into the novaopen gmail. Now that he's through running delawarr, I'll see if I can get him to post an update. Additionally, check out roadtonova.blogspot.com for pics dating back several months now of the fantasy and other terrain in progress at our build days.

Let me double check on belakor.

Skyblight will likely be undeniable per raw.

Objectives are provided by the NOVA, are indeed infinitely tall to prevent oddities resulting from pre fixed terrain, and are treated purely as invisible markers for los/etc.

Thanks for answering my previous questions.

MVBrandt wrote:

Sorry but, how is that raw? Exact wording is:

"All Gargoyle units from this Formation have the Objective Secured special rule. A unit with this special rule controls Objective Markers even if an enemy scoring unit is within range of the Objective Marker, unless the enemy unit also has this special rule."

The rule literally states that only scoring units are stopped from contesting.

Are we saying different things? I don't think we are but clarify. They will be undeniable per the raw = undeniable in the fashion the raw dictates. May not have been clear tbh.

I think Budzerker's point is that Objective Secured doesn't say anything about Denial units. Typical GW rules writing. The RAI seems clear (Gargs cannot be contested by anything but another Objective Secured unit), but the RAW is messy as always.

I apologize for the lack of posting. real life and stuff.

I have been going over a lot of stuff for the fantasy event this year. dont want the same mistakes as last year. we have almost sold out of the 32 player cap and i am very confident we can get to 64 again.

i am currently polishing the primer for a final draft. its a very straight forward approach. simple is best. if anyone has questions in the mean time, just send an email through nova and i will get back to you asap.

i will try to post more on the forums in the future

Well that is good to hear. But you have to understand the hesitation on my part and possibly others if it has not been sold out with the lack of information being decimiated. Seeing how other Fantasy GTs (FOWL and Brawlers to name a few) have sold out within days I believe it would help if more information was given. It just seems like Fantasy is being tossed to the side.

no it wasnt, i just had a baby and i just ran a 40k GT with the new missions Brandt and company wrote up for nova this year. time consuming. also it is still months away and we are ahead of last years pace which i played in personally. i think there was around 56 players. this year is a much more simplified rules package. no wonky LoS chart and all, just a very straight forward battle points based tournament.

the primer isnt going to change too much from what it is now with the exception of chaos dwarves being allowed. as i said before, any questions just ask

I have to admit that has been my impression too Grix, but Nova is far from alone on that front... my feeling is that if you want a Con that focuses on fantasy, you have to pick one that specializes in that alone. I'm sure the fantasy event will be well run, but it's obviously not the main attraction at Nova.

Unfortunately the search function is down at the moment so I can't easily check; what is it that you're wanting to address / improve from last year?

With an upsurge in registrations over the past few days, thiXare getting tighter in the hotel room and 40k GT areas especially, and Fantasy/Warmachine as well. Get registered! A bunch of folks at adepticon shared their intent to go, and I don't want anyone to miss out. We cannot add more 40k spots.

Also of note - the first shots of some of the charity armies are starting to come in. Led by the likes of Dave Taylor and Brandon Palmer, over twenty amazing artists are building the battle for maccragge (2 x 2k+ Tyranids and Ultramarine armies, including led work and knights), an awesome ogre kingdoms army, a death watch army done by the Penny Arcade forums in support of child's play, and more!

Awesome to hear! We're really excited about how it turned out ourselves.

In other news, we rolled with the punches and ran an awesome massive GT with only two months after sixth edition dropped. We'll do the same but even better this year with more time after the edition. Register now ... Also grab your hotel room. Both are running out fast.

How do you believe Nova will handle unbound armies and formations?
