So after reading this article from Lexicanum, I had an idea.
How about a Tyranid unit (Gaunt unit or something) that can purchase the rapid evolve ability or take it as a "chapter trait" for being from Hive Fleet Gorgon. Essentially the rule goes like this:
If the unit is shot at and takes casualties, roll a D6. On a 6, the unit improves its armor saves to 1 better than the AP of the weapon that caused the most casualties among them for the rest of the game.
So it creates a unit that you do not want to shoot at with low AP weapons.

I like it. At first I thought it wouldn't really kick in, because how often do you shoot Lascannons and stuff at Gaunts.
But like, for small arms fire it'll be killer, both fluffy and effective. Totally gets my thumbs up as an idea.

I'd most definately approve. Perhaps it is more of an army-wide upgrade: 500 pts to apply to all units. And if we are going with gorgon, why not up it to weapons as well; run it like the ymgarl genestealers.
Any ways, definately a good idea.

Or even... just straight up apply it to all units for free.
I mean its not like the game isn't swarming with bs already

Arun I don't think even Hive Fleet Gorgon can evolve in the middle of the battle. Those stories talk about how the next waves of beasties came with more appropriate builds. Wouldn't it just be more simple to give the Nids a lot more options? Though a problem is that you could justify them having the option to have almost any rule in the game and you can't really represent all the mutations on the models.

I like the concept, but would need better implementation. For example if each hive fleet got a version of chapter tactics, Gorgons could be your idea (up to a 4+, no better) but it limits the amount of monstrous creatures to 3 per army. Every rule needs a downside, for balances sake.

Remember, this *is* 40k we're talking about. There is no balance, only war

To keep it more fluffy maybe instead of having the gaunts' armor magically change in combat you could have it so that gaunts that are birthed from tervigons have the better armor. I don't know how you'd determine what their new save is though.

How about Tervigons are allowed to add benefits to Gaunts they spawn, similar to Ymgarls?

Well in the current rules they evolve with only some control, they're unstable as they are forced to change every turn. Naturally every mutation benefits a genestealer but the point remains that their malleable code can be dangerous for the Hive Fleet if they ever re-absorbed them.
at least I'm pretty sure that's their story...

To a maximum of amor X
IF you really want to give 0+/1+ armor saves to the gaunts, you're crazy.
