Usually i'm a fairly casual player but there's a tournament coming up at my FLGS where the point is that you take the meanest thing you possibly can within the points limit. No restrictions on army, what's the nastiest thing you could possibly fit into 500pts? I'm guessing it's probably something like two Vendettas, or maybe a souped-up Riptide. A Land Raider seems like it ought to be strong but I imagine people with be prepared for that sort of thing given the theme. We are also allowed non-super heavy non-gargantuan creature Forge World units, though I don't know of anything super strong that FW put out.

I did once play a 500pt Tournament with the following list-
CCS
Vet Squad w/ 2 plasma in a Chimera
Vet squad w/ 2 melta in a chimera

Leman Russ battle tank

I won 3 out of 5 games, lots of opponents were pretty scared of fighting that much armor at 500 pts.

5 groups of 26 grots/two runtherds is 140 models in just under 500 pts. You could even afford to upgrade to a few prods and perhaps accidentally wound an MC with it.

This.

Alternatively the DE Fighters are really good at 500 points. IIRC you can take 2 of them with basic missiles plus the Baron (for +1 to go first) and 2x5 Kabalite Warriors in 500 points.

No FOC?
3 Anni barges, 5 units of 3 scarab swarms. Now you are going to TRASH all the heavy armour that all the opponents bring thinking that the meanest, shootiest, armoured platform possible is the way to go!
Or 7 spyders and 10 scarabs... no AA then though, but 7 mcs that create even more scarabs to add to the AT swarm.

Sorry if I was unclear, the foc is still there, I just meant I have access to every army. I think a Caestus Assault Ram is going to be one of the scarier things you can bring, an av13 Flyer with melta on a large blast and It's cheap enough to fit some other decent stuff in there.

I'd say any of the larger, nastier MCs. Wraithknight, Dreadknight, Swarmlord.

But for maximum annoyance value:

Tervigon
Doom of Malantai in Spore
10 Termagants
Tervigon

I make it 500 on the nose, so no upgrades for the Tervigons, but hey, free troops.

Tervigon with the works, 10 gants, Flyrant with Devourers and Toxin.

A fast flyer to smash tanks, very tough, 3+ scoring units. I think that's tops unless there's a rune priest.

This is great. I would hate to play against this at 500 points, lol.

I played around with the Caestus idea some more. It's more expensive than I remember but I think still worth it, better armour than a Predator, the most potent Ramming in the game, a large blast Meltagun with 150% of the range AND anti-infantry missiles in a flying package is just too good to pass up. Against Aarmies relying on S7 anti-aircraft fire it's almost invincible, particularly because it shouldn't ever have to face a non-flyer with it's rear armour. The rough list I came up with is this:
HQ
Librarian - 65
Troops
Tactical Squad, Heavy Bolter - 80
Scout Squad, Missile Launcher, Flakk Missiles - 80
Fast Attack
Caestus Assault Ram - 275
Total - 500
Very simple, as you'd expect with over half the points tied up in one model. Basic strategy is to have the Scouts hunker down in cover and provide a little anti-air (not that much, granted, but I couldn't fit any more) and have the Tactical Marines either ride the ram if I need to cross the board or more likely deploy in some cover also and use the Heavy Bolter to thin hordes. Against something like a green tide I would block movement with the flier and just drop templates and bolter fire into them, this list has a decent amount of anti-infantry firepower and should make short work of enemy tanks between the Magna-Melta and Ramming. The main weaknesses are Flyers and Monstrous creatures, enemy Flyers coming on second could easily hit the rear armour of the ram, which is much easier to cut through and I only have 1 missile launcher with Skyfire which is unlikely to cut it against something like a Helldrake. Against Monstrous creatures I have a decent number of high-strength shots but not a lot of low AP so I suspect I'd struggle against something like a Wraithknight. I do have the flyer to block movement though, it's just a shame I can't ram monstrous creatures.

I could go with two missile scout squads to boost anti-air firepower but they can't ride in the Ram so I would find it harder to capture distant objectives. That also make my Troops quite a bit more vulnerable outside of cover.

I will probably play around with a Wraithknight list a bit later but for now I'd like to see what you guys think of this.
