RAW permits me to use abuse the Vectored Retro Thrusters (p.69 Tau Codex) in such a way that when I attempt an Initiative Test (Characteristis Test, p.7 BRB) I can use the Initiative 4 of the Drones if there are any in my unit. Is this legal?

In light of this, isnt the Vectored Retro Thrusters for 5 points a must have upgrade as you do NOT want to get stuck in cc especially when you are fielding a largish unit with suits and drones? It's enough to have a single one in the whole unit for the entire unit to gain this...

Am I smelling cheese?

Yes, it's legal.

You can also ally in I5 battle brothers from SM and Eldar to double your chance of success.

Not quite.

It halves your chance of faliure, not doubling the chance of success.

The real consideration is if it is worth a hard point, given that you only have a limited number of slots and there is a long list of weapons and other wargear that might be of higher priority.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Not on my commander, no, but if I attach him to a unit of 3 crisis suits, then 1 hard point will certainly be available, unless you're the sort of guy who wants to twin-link one weapon and take another weapon for each suit.

How precisely is this abuse? If you're playing Tau and something manages to survive to charge you, chances are hit and run isn't going to save you in the following turns.

because RAI the piece of wargear itself is supposed to help your squad break from combat, not a drone.

RAW of course drone I is used.

I don't think it's a case of RAI, who's to say the advanced sensors on the drone don't help them disengage better? The Drone is part of the squad for all intents and purposes.

Whats even more fun is putting said commander in a squad of broadsides. The look on an opponents face when the broadsides jump 3d6" out of CC is priceless.

Ouch. Centurions with a Multi-Spectrum Sensor Suite and Vectored Retro Thrusters commander with a couple of shield drones is just plain nasty. Thats why I hate 6th and allies

Now, think about Centurions with O'Vesa, the IC riptide, with attached MSS and Retro-thrusters commanders from the bodyguard.... with Tigurius buffing with Biomancy and allied inquistor with prescience, servo skulls and Psychotroke grenades for anti-melee.

This is the Deathstar I'm running these days

Eh. behind an aegis line with the riptide up front. 4+ cover and they all hit the riptide instead of the centurions. You only have a few S10 templates and once they're gone, so are you.

Plus most death stars I see have some sort of way to get 2+ cover or, in the case of khorne hounds, invul saves. Skyshield landing pad and grimoire of truenames. Ouch.

Inquisitors cannot join a unit with Tau in it, as Inquisitorial units and Tau are Desparate Allies.

^ hahaha no. Inq and Tau are allies of convenience.

Only the Dark Eldar are desperate allies with Inq.

IC's join a unit. Inquis are battle brothers with SM. Tau are battle brothers with SM. You can both join a SM unit, although once the the SM in it are dead you cease to be a unit.

Seriously? a Vindicator shot? Is that your solution? I'll just tank it on my Riptide with 3++ or Iron Arm Sevrin with 2++, or just pop your vindicator from across the board with my tank-hunter ordnance.

How do you get O'Vesa, MSS and Tigurius all in there? Isn't that 3 detachments? Farsight Enclave, Tau and Ultramarines respectively.

Touchstar from the Farsight Enclave actually has MSS.
