Video actually shows he was not raising his voice or at all grumpy. The only person yelling and being unreasonable is the deputy. The parent was actually filing out the forms to make his kids walkers so they could walk home, which was perfectly within the rules, the deputy was just mad the parent reported him for his behavior and was legally 'beating the system' by turning his kids to walkers.

Probably. It's not a new idea either, my schools did it in the early 90's.

I don't know how it works in Tennessee, but in Canada, when a situation is not dynamic then any peace officer attempting to put someone in handcuffs before informing the subject that they are under arrest is a guaranteed way to lose your job, likely sued in civil court and potentially even prosecuted for kidnapping.

Good lord, your average american parent cannot even enter the child's school? That is insane. Both schools my kids have been to have had an open door, parents welcome policy.

Seems like the kids are being taught to be afraid of everyone, all the time.

Idiot doesn't want to wait in line, causes scene. Judging by that gut maybe he should park a reasonable distance and walk to the front door to collect his spawn. The real heroes in this story are all the non-sociopath parents just doing what a normal human being would do in this type of situation.

Where's Officer Pike when you need him?

Actually, he didn't cause a scene. The deputy who had his boss reprimand him did. And he did you one better, he left his car at home and walked all the way to the school to collect his spawn and was following the school's policy to fill out the consent form to allow his children to walk home.

So the "real heroes" are the parents who wait in a two-hour line to claim their children and put them at risk in a documented dangerous traffic situation that even the county sheriff testified it was dangerous and put kids at risk?

People just enjoy internet lynch mobs I suppose. Seems like when you research and read more articles you find he was in the right and is going to come out on top on this issue and it was an over emotional cop who had his boss called on him.

Pretty much nkelsch. I'm really sorta amazed by the number of people agreeing with the deputy here. I'm all about not putting up with frivolous heliocopter parents, but this guy does not seem like one of em.

He was arrested for going against the system, if he doesnt want to sign a waiver he doesnt have to. The deputy crossed a line arresting him for disorderly in my opinion.

It is absolutely incredible what gets picked up and spread across the internet as news.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

:We've got plenty of junk on the local news as well It's just that I can kind of accept local interest that leads to cats up trees and ribbon cutting ceremonies for the new shopping centre getting on the local news, but when it moves to being national news, you kind of expect it to be something that affects a lot of people, or at affects one person in a really remarkable way.

That's more than a little dramatic. Asking someone to follow a process, even when that process sounds like its pretty stupid and unnecessary, is not an infringement of citizen's rights. And some guy getting the raw end of some over-policing is not national news. If it was, there'd be 100 stories posted here a week.

Exactly. We're not in bus distance for the elementary, Jr. or high school. Here however parents don't drive up, they park their cars and walk. Alternatively, this is a local school here. They just walk. I know its an amazing concept.

After watching the video, I think I'd be doing the exact same thing as that dad.... I also think that that "sherriff's deputy" will be out of a job, as he simply put the cuffs on, and didn't read the rights, etc.

And judging by the size/build of the parent, he coulda laid a hurtin on that guy if he really wished to.... And you know it's a small town area when the deputy is calling the parent by first name, and the parent is calling the sheriff and asking for him by first name as well.

As a soon to be parent of school aged kids, I guess this is the sort of shenanigans I have to look forward to

I'm inclined to side with the parent, even though he looks like a trouble-maker, and apparently has been to jail before. However, on the basis of the video, the school would have a difficult time convincing me that this was not a school resource officer exerting his authority over someone he believed he could.

I understand that the school feels a responsibility to keep the kids safe and has come up with this system to try to accomplish that. Clearly that system does not work for some parents, so they need to change it. This system would not work for me, since my vehicle routinely contains items that are not legal to have on school campus, which includes the pickup area of most schools. I have never been questioned for why I park off campus and walk up to get my younger children and my older children just walk out to where I park and have never been questioned about that. However, I don't look like I've been to jail and do look like I could afford a lawyer. I suspect that most school resource officers think twice about exerting authority over someone who is not in the wrong AND can afford a lawyer.

Schools (and other places too) seem to have developed the mind-set that the children belong to them and the parents are simply allowed to check them out for evenings and weekends, provided the parents are on their best behavior. If a non-government organization, like a church, were acting like this school was and the police were called, do you think this guy would have been arrested? Or would the more likely outcome being someone else arrested for kidnapping?

If he were in a church and the police were called, odds are high he would have been arrested. Every time we've called they have been.

Whats with the vehicles to being with. Do parents not walk there??? The whole thing souhnds stupid, but the one thing you don't do is start gak in a school. YOU WILL BE ARRESTED.

I doubt that you have ever told a parent they could not have their child and then, when they called the police, they ended up being the ones arrested. Barring some sort of outstanding warrant, I can't imagine a situation where that would happen.

To me this is 100% between the school and the parent, he didn't do anything illegal that i can tell. Obviously the officer placed him as disorderly for not going with the flow... but he didnt meet the definition of that. I think that he should have left the situation alone.
Why didn't the officer just leave it alone.

I'm not that amazed. The school got angry at my very young cousin because he wouldn't eat the school lunch (hot dogs). They forced him to eat it, which was a horrible idea since the entire family is strict vegetarian.

your words would justify any repressive act by governments, not just this particular event... its the same justification for all the nazis who were "just following policy" or "just following the process"...

and since when are we forced to bend over for any hair brained policy that some soccer mom, or principal comes up with?

if you dont draw the "human rights line" well before we get into "the right to my children" territory... thats just crazy... you either didnt think it through, or dont really consider children to be important to you, or that you have a right to them.

the news needs to report abusive/stupid/unnecessary laws or policies and treatment by officers/schools...

THAT IS THE MEDIAS JOB, for once it did it.

or would you rather hear about kim kardashian and the latest big brother show on the news?

people have an inalienable right to their children, as much as they do to their OWN lives... some parents would even consider their children, MORE important, so yes, it is a big deal when some kafka-esque law or body of authority/soccer moms denies you access to them

I would much rather SEE the 100 stories a week about actual news like the chronic problem with asinine, stupid, and outright unconstitutional treatment of people by :authority" figures, be they cop or school body, then all the BS on the infotainment news

You're right because thats not the issue. Further you said that if a church called he likely would not have gon e to jail. If a church has to call the police buddy you can bet dollars to donuts you're going to jail because you are a crazy feth. The issue is him burring up in a school. Nope. Go to jail and get your ass kicked along the way.

Regardless of the validity (or not) of the school policy, does it not bother you folks that a man was arrested, went to jail, and now has to go to court because basically he broke a school policy?

A policy.

A school policy.

Not a law passed by some elected legislative body. Not a statute. A policy.

Yeah, the deputy nailed him with ''disorderly conduct' which is a violation of the law, but that is a charge a cop can use because he is having a bad day. And after watching the video if those actions count as 'disorderly conduct' the law covering that needs to be changed.

Pathetic. I can't comprehend how the arresting that guy is remotely acceptable to folks.
