Is all of that fluff about Eldrad dying by entering the Blackstone Fortress's matrix to stop the matrix wrong now-why has GW kept him alive this time?

Because they keep their story from moving forward. The latest date in 40k is still when that happened. To move on from that they'd have to move in M42.

Because GW got so much backlash from the public at the end of the 13th Black Crusade they recanted everything.

'Cause retcon! Do you remember squats, of cause you don't, that's what they want you to think!

Squats were not "retconned" out of the setting, they were "written out of" the setting.

I wish they got a proper retconning or writing out.... Like the orks and tyranid wiped out almost all of them, and then the greedy adeptus mechanicus and inquisition killed off the last strongholds to get their technology. But not before the squat engineer guilds took off in ships with all the best of their tech and became the Demiurg. Seems like that would fit the grim darkness... And would feel like a proper end.

On topic - What book is Eldrads death from?

There's a few special characters you can play on the battlefield that's been dead for longer than Eldrad. The game is about making your own narratives, not about representing canonical facts of the setting.

I really need to stay away from the 40K forums.

If all characters followed their fluff, taking Abby would mean you automatically lose.

First mention of Demiurgs in timeline is during HH when they were already mature race (some relatively recent Alpha legion novel|novella iirc). And they were robot-builders.

Without passion we'd be truly dead.

Oh cool! I didn't realize the authors had included them that early. I know the codex/bfg stuff didn't have them in it that early. Anyways I was just trying to dream up a way to pass the torch between the two. Meh, it'll all get retconned in a few years anyways.

The Alpha Legion's short story in The Primarchs. The Demiurg built robots to mine out asteroids from the inside out for client planets.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.

Because of how idiotic the EOT results were for eldar.

Hey you slaughtered chaos in your special warzone with a like 4.5 to 1 win ratio! I know, let's kill your main character, the hope for your entire race to show how well you did! Congrats, guys!

Nonsense. The Battle Company box is perfect for filling out your ranks of aspect warriors with a large contingent from the Screaming Baldies shrine.

Eldrad never died. It was just standard Eldar trickery. Only instead of Orks and Necrons, it was against GW consumers.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

GW will bring back Squats, Zoats and Half Eldar Librarians before they acknowledge EOT.

Also this. Eldrad also killed Abaddon in one of their own WD battle reports in close combat - and they let him live. If anyone should be dead, it's Abaddon who lost in combat to the Farseer who's worst at fighting (he had lower WS than a stock Farseer in 2nd edition!).

Squats are still there. Sure, you can't play them, but they're mentioned in the list of abhumans in the BRB.

Nope. You'd lose the destruction of the imperium and they would all think they won, but in reality he'd actually have done it all for some foretress ship of death and doom or some broken op swords that in rules isn't all that crazy but flff wise is absolutely terrifying.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also people raged at chaos actually winning (and even the official ending retreated from a lot of chaos gains and odd things were changed around. For example, Cadia falls to chaos when in reality it was pretty much every planet around it that was struck) I still agree that Eldrad falling was going a bit too far. If you want to go that way it seems it should really play up the spirit stones still working and some big hey he is alive just send in one eldar to take back that eldar planet from chaos.

Ah was it really that dramatic for Eldar? I'm curious why they went that way... Perhaps just for grimdark? (although I think some of his stones work successfully even after that incident giving hope to Eldar) All I really remember is the webway battles where it was a straight up dogpile from both DE and E against TS or something.

For dead characters.... not entirely sure buuut I think there are actually a few forgeworld units that are mysteriously gone never to be seen again (which when it is just some guardsman of a baneblade seems like they probably died since the baneblade went boom). Actually FW in general enjoys letting you play guys that die, eventually die, etc.

A previous guard codex allowed you to play Lord Solar Macharius, and he's never been "current" in any version of the game.
