So, this is the place for deals this holiday season. Amazon has a smoking deal on a Badgers Sotar 2020-F airbrush right now. This is a high end airbrush that regularly runs $400+ retail.
http://www.amazon.com/Badger-Air-Brush-2020-2F-Gravity-Airbrush/dp/B000BROVIO/ref=pd_sim_ac_1
Amazon has like 80+ in stock for $59.99 US right now.
They are supposed to be amazing airbrushes for detail work. I have one, but still need a conversion coupler for my Iwata hose to get it working for me. I'm just lazy :p
Anyway, I thought I'd pass the deal along in case someone is looking for one.

They had been hovering around 80-90 for like a year now, cool to see the price drop although it's still too weird to me a 300$msrp airbrush is selling for that price. With that said I'll probably be picking one up.

I bought a patriot by badger first and now am upgrading to this, that said pretty much any airbrush can lay a base coat but you get a wider spray with a less detail oriented nozzle. You can change the nozzle though if you want a wider spray but I wouldn't bother, for our purposes as mini painters I find the smaller the better unless painting LARGE vehicles, in witch case a can of krylon fusion usually does the job for cheaper quicker.
Tsilber wrote:Wow, i been looking into getting an airbrush kit. I purchased this, what else do i need to get this thing working?

I would get a cleaning station and brushes a stand and generally you can get a compressor with a hose included. I would check micro mark, or harbor freight first, they usually have MUCH better deals on small airbrush compressors. Alternatively you can convert any air compressor you may have in your garage if you have one for home improvement already, you just really need a moisture trap (the small airbrush ones already have this).

Sheesh, it's almost cheaper to order that gun than it is a couple of the parts for it =/ The needles and nozzles are upwards of $30 a piece on a bad day. Usually more like $15 though. I got one back when they were 70-80 and thought it was a hell of a deal. So much easier to use than the cheapy china iwata knock off. Just watch out and use your metal cap all the time you aren't spraying, those needles bend super super easily.
I heartily recommend a quick disconnect while you're at it, so much easier to detach the hose for cleaning and storage of the gun.

So does the valve regulator do the same thing the regulator on your compressor itself, only closer to the gun?

Yep. If you're the control sort who writes down specific recipes, pressures etc then I would say its not that useful, but if you have a more organic style, or have a lot of experience and can do stuff by feel and eye, then it is useful to modify air flow on the fly.

The one I ordered from Amazon had the badger certificate of blah blah, and looks a lot like the first link. There are like 3 cup sizes and various needles. The different trigger on the one Manchu linked is different, yes, mine is like the amazon link.
I wanna say my cup is sized inbetween those, I swear it isn't quite that big but it does exist.
The cap at the end (amazon has guard prongs, manchu link does not) is swapable, I got both I think.

This came up in the 'people who bought this also bought:' section and I am wondering if that would be a good compressor for it?
Also other than the airbrush itself, a compressor and say the cleaning station what else would one need to get started?
I know nothing about this stuff but I've been looking into getting an airbrush for a little while now.

One of the 1-star reviewers says he wanted a 2nd Sotar and the one he recieved was clearly of poorer quality than his original, despite having all the proper markings and certificates. But even if that is true the vast majority of reviewers say this is a great airbrush, so even if it IS a forgery it's still a pretty good one, and fantastic for $60.
I bought one of the $80 amazon compressor+airbrush starter setups a couple months back and while it works pretty well, I've been thinking about upgrading to a better airbrush so this is DARN tempting. Bad month to be looking at $60 items that I really don't need though.

GrimDork wrote:The cap at the end (amazon has guard prongs, manchu link does not) is swapable, I got both I think.
Mine also came with the prongs. If this is your first airbrush, you may want to switch the tip to the pronged one, which will protect the needle better. The exposed needle is ideal for the finest levels of detail, but it's also much, much easier to accidentally damage.
There is a good review here if you'd like to see how it works.
cincydooley wrote:So does the valve regulator do the same thing the regulator on your compressor itself, only closer to the gun?
Yes, just a little finer and easier to reach while you're working. I like to set it at 25psi at the regulator and then do fine adjustments up and down on the valve. If you keep your compressor on your desk it may not be worth it, but I keep mine under my desk and way back so it's kind of a pain to mess with it. With this the only interaction I have with my compressor is turning it on and off with my foot.
I can't vouch for the one anyone gets going forward, but when I follow the link in the OP, Amazon indicates this is the same one I bought from them 3 months ago. I have several Badger airbrushes and am confident the one I have is genuine. Your mileage may vary.
My understanding is Amazon bought them in bulk; or so says Ken Badger.

If what I got is somehow not legit, its still 100% better than the obviously china knockoff I had before.
I've probably bent my needle a bit, but I've corrected it. When I actually get a tad better I'll probably swap it out, I know it has to be missing just the smallest bit of the tip where it's narrowest. The advice to use the pronged cap though is very good for anyone starting out. This is a very nice brush but the unguarded needle will be *extremely* easy to bend and break for newcomers, and they are far from cheap
I can't say much about that compressor, I've got a 6 gallon pancake I figure why get something that's always going to be running, even if it's quiet, when I can get something that'll let me run for upwards of an hour of moderate use for 3 minutes of vacuum cleaner grade noise. Take it outside charge it up and run the brush even though baby is asleep.
The in-line regulator seems cool though, would probably be something smart to pick up moving forward.

I have one of these (from amazon) and its a great brush.
It is my.....fourth? fifth airbrush? I use it for any work I need to do for small areas where I want very fine control.
A few things;
PROS:
* its very nice, slightly better than the khrome.
* very fine needle, make sure to keep it safe.
* paint cup is small, but with the right paint and pressure, you get excellent coverage form this thing - and use VERY little paint.
* excellent control
CONS:
* like any precision high end airbrush - this thing is VERY picky about paint and keeping it clean. I would suggest only using higher quality pigmented paint, and if possible good quality airbrush paint in it.
* must keep it clean (picky brush).
Ok, this thing I would NOT suggest for a beginner - like any very fine precision brush - its can be very temperamental for cleaning and paint quality.
If someone were a beginner, I would suggest either a patriot 105, iwata HPCS or even a paasche. If you don't have a lot of experience with them, airbrushes can be quite frustrating at times - again, this is an amazing paint brush....but I would not want my first car to learn to drive be a 7 speed racing car.
Again, great brush - but I would not suggest for a beginning airbrush user.
* edit for typos

Thats the compressor I bought last year, and its pretty good with consistent air flow. The sound level is good too IMO, as it doesnt even annoy my cats. I''m sure you could spend a lot more and get better, but it has served my needs as a beginner very nicely.

I'll be happy to send it to you if you A.) Send me the money first - I can calculate shipping from my own Sotar, and B.) understand that since it's international shipping there is no insurance unless you pay extra for it - i.e if it gets lost and we used the cheapest shipping uninsured, I can't replace it. If you want to do that, PM me and we'll figure it out. I'm shipping from a kickstarter so I might as well get the most out of my Stamps.com premium membership while it lasts.

I live in Finland and ordered it.
Personally I didn't think the extra fees that bad: $14.74 for S&H and $17.94 for import fees (=24% VAT).
Technically, you'd have to pay the VAT for any items that cost over 20 euros anyway, not that anyone does unless the package gets caught by customs though...
