obviously the likeliness of GW moving into the 42nd millenium via rulebook and codexes are rare, but i don't see why Black LIbrary or Forgeworld could expand into the 42nd millenium

are they always going to have the result of the 13th crusade as a mystery...

fans have been wanting GW to expand into the 42nd millenium

Probably because the end of the 13th BC made it seem like something BIG has to happen before we pass in the next millennium.

I'd wish book/s about the Imperium dealing with Necrons, who keep awakening at an alarming rate all over the galaxy, and the Tau Empire trying to expand. Too much focus on Chaos and Orks these days.

No, I don't think they will. Unless the sales drop really really really low. But I don't think this will happen either. They do pretty well these days.

And really, you might want to consider what a major plot advancement will do in terms of gameplay.

If it is going to be a significant plot advancement, things are going to get massively shaken up, and that does not play well with the gameplay aspect of 40k. Your favorite faction took a beating in the plot advancement? Too bad, they might be on their way to weakness on the tabletop. Your favorite character dies in a moment of the story? Well, too bad, you don't get to use him in future codex updates.

On the other hand, if they play it to keep the gameplay aspect safe, then it is a meaningless change to the plot. They may as well just add 1 to the numbers and go home for all the impact it'll have.

The whole point of 40k is that the "Atomic Clock" is 1 second until midnight. What will happen? Who will win? and so on.

I thought the Ciaphas Cain series was set in the 42M by way of publish date of his memoirs?

If they do advance the plot what you like to see happen? I personally like to see the Emperor return and the rise of another Golden Crusade to eliminate the chaos heretics and xeno scum of the galaxy. hahaha :-D

GW or someone will eventually move the 40K story substantially forward - I do believe this.

It's not a plot. It's a setting.
That said BL does have some (Not many) Books set in the 42nd Millennium.

I kinda don't want them too....

Ignorance is bliss, I made another thread about it, but do we really want to know?

Doubtless they will make all kinds of stupid gak happen if they move forward judging by their recent push into the HH, I really don't think it would be a good thing if they started.. I dunno, resurrecting Primarchs, killing the Emperor, or what have you.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

To go along with this:

I play Wings of War/Wings of Glory, we all know what happened in the end, it doesn't stop it from being a fun game or cause the ruining of campaign narratives.

Comics advance and regress the plot all of the time. I can still play heroclix teams from pretty much any storyline vs teams from any other storyline, or even mix storylines or avoid them all together.

Given that even GW says you don't have to use a special character only as that person (but can have them be whoever you want, and the rules are just the rules that model goes by, so that you can have custom chapter xyz be all yours), special characters do not have to be from the current timeline. They can be dead and gone, corrupted by Chaos, imprisoned, whatever without denying the use of them at a set time (Forgeworld's stint on the Badab war for example, we all know how that shook out but there are models and rules for characters who now no longer fit those rules/models in the current timeline).

Some books have but why would they need to? They have so much stuff to fill in there isn't any requirement for BL to advance the story any further.

Correct, the Cain books are essentially set in M42, since that's when Amberly is distributing his writings along with her commentary to her fellow Inquisitors. Though the events that Cain is recording take place in M41.

Though it's important to note that only the Cain books have done this (to my knowledge), and that BL writers are allowed to put their own original ideas into their writings which may not necessarily line up with what GW says in their own studio fluff. The Cain books especially like to deviate from what's written in the studio fluff in places, so this is likely another example of a BL writer adding in their own ideas. By all means, go along with it if you like, but GW won't necessarily acknowledge it.

Considering that Forgeworld is quite busy with their Horus Heresy spinoff, I don't see why you can't have a future game as well. Moving the setting forward doesn't prevent you from using your army. You can't use stuff like the Fellblade in normal 40K, and it isn't the end of the world. Why is the same not true of M42 or beyond?

Think of something clever to say.
