And just a few days ago he had a picture of himself, all sad in Mandela's old cell as a Mandela tribute. Good to see he bounced back from the trauma.

Here's oh so sad Obama paying tribute to Mandela with a picture of himself:

A couple days later, and the prez shows the real respect he has for Mandela:

You know, I was going to post in here my usual "Truly, Obama is history's greatest monster"; which is a rote retort to the latest faux-outage, but the truth is that this was not a great moment for us. It was tasteless and the optics are terrible.

It's always, 100% classless to take a picture at a funeral or memorial in my opinion regardless of who you are, and maybe just a little more so if you're a head of state.

@Kanluwen: This guy, the supposed leader of the free world and our representitive in the international eye, can't keep his face away from a camera long enough to pay tribute to a man that is worth 100 of him.

Yeah... it was pretty tasteless... but, not something to be outrageously outraged though.

I'm more worried about the increasing authoritarianism in the US government.

Did any of you watch the memorial? It was a celebration of his life. It's not like this was done at his actual funeral.

If anything world leaders being more friendly with each other during the ceremony is a good thing. It kind of represents the spirit of the man and the country.

Of course, any thinking American should be - but we can consider and discuss several issues at the same time. As HBMC once said in a different context, the best policy is "credit is where credit's due", and that also means pointing out when Obama done goofed, I think. It's not exactly a Cuban Missile Crisis or anything but it looks pretty poor.

Still, the handshake with Raul Castro was kind of a good optic, diplomatically (imo) so on the whole maybe it evened out.

Also, I am really glad you mention this (the authoritarian thing) because I can now post my new favorite image I found earlier by accident:

I'm not sure the American president should have went to his memorial.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.

Why not?

Realize that Mandela was a complicated man (no one is perfect).

Funny thing... it was a Republican President George W. Bush's administration that removed Mandela from the State Department's Terrorist Watch List.

I thought Bush evil and all that.

Old Mandela was certainly an outstanding man. In his later years he did a lot to promote peaceful co-existence in his country.

I am not sure that excuses the terrorism and war crimes committed by him or his followers in his younger years.

Due to that I don't think it was appropriate for the American president to attend.

Send condolences certainly maybe a few words to the media and then let it lie.

He was a revolutionary. He is only a terrorist if the american revolutionaries were terrorist. Was George Washington a terrorist. Was Thomas Jefferson a terrorist? Any revolution is terrorism according to your logic.

His actions as a terrorist only serve to make his transition and his decision to chose truth and reconsiliation over revenge and power that much more meaningful. Of course we already covers all that in the other Mandela thread.

Shouldn't people be mad that Obama shook hands with Castro?

He is only a revolutionary because he won.

If he had died and his cause with it, he would have been labelled a terrorist. Like he was.

Open rebellion and casualties inflicted I can understand. The seemingly indiscriminate bombings, the burning of people alive, the kidnappings, and the torture.

No, I don't understand that.

Great. You don't like the man. Has nothing to do with "Obama took a selfie".

Take it to the "Mandela died" thread to air your grievances with the man IMO.

An extremely vocal slice of the American demographic feels very strongly that we should do everything we can to ostracize Cuba. I personally don't hold with that; but this is at least a sorta-story because of that - to those people it's a huge deal and probably a giant betrayal or something.

Calm your tits, I'm fairly certain he was just doing this to be polite, but America has kind of been anti-Cuba for a few decades. I'm all for this changing, so people can get Cuban cigars and realize that they weren't really missing anything. Also still serious about dirty dirty commies.
