Why does their codex being in print matter? It's still a codex.

New guys to 40k are unlikely to jump straight into digital releases, especially as they'll often have started out by walking into a GW store, or witnessed players in a game using printed rules.

SoB had that white dwarf codex. A little outdated but does that count?

I would normally recommend the army that the new player is the most interested in. Maybe that's just me...

I voted Daemons because nobody's first game of 40K should be spent playing as those gits.

Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)

I voted Imperial Guard.

I just don't think they're a good choice for a new player. As the models have a low points cost, you have to have loads of them; this works out both expensive in monetary terms as well as time invested painting them.

Given the current codex I was tempted to agree with some others in the thread and vote Tyranid as a new player is not going to enjoy losing every game. However, new codex in January

If I'm getting you right, my vote makes it LESS likely that the new player will choose that army? Tyranids. We could always use less Tyranid players.

Ehhh seems I misvoted. Change one from Orks to Tau - the former is awesome, the latter really, really doesn't seem to fit the 40k universe (IMO at least)

They do. Just because it's printed on E-paper doesn't make it any less legitimate.

That is not the point. The point is that Selym counted it out because it is not an actual, physical codex book. Just a file.

What's the problem with that?

I voted for Space Marines since it is a forgiving army and the learning curve is rather steep.

I never claimed the Guard (or the role they fill in 40K) was "new", just that it's boring, uninspired, inappropriate and infinitely better done elsewhere (while simultaneously most things in 40K are done better than the IG).

Right... Remind me who keeps the whole of the Imperium intact while the fancy marines go off and win medals?

I love the Imperial Guard. I agree with you that IG are not original, but that's the point! Guardsman don't fight with the most advanced technology nor the most advanced physique in the galaxy. They fight with nothing but courage and a desire to protect the realms of the Emperor, and that is what makes them in my mind one of the best armies in the 40k system.

Anyways on topic I voted for Tau, because I've seen way too many Tau players and too few Sister or DE players

I'd (in the spirit of this post) recommend SM. They are versatile, have options, visually pleasing and somewhat easy to learn.

I voted Tau because, despite being my favorite (and actual) army i don't want to see so many Tau players just because they are the flavor of the month codex (which for some reason doesn't seem to be going away).

Also I'd like to point out that polls like this seem a little irrelevant to me now due to the way 40k has evolved. It's not so much pick an army any more. It's more a case of pick whatever you like and combine it in any way you feel.

Edit:

Also it's a good idea not to include SoB because they are a much harder army to work with as a beginner being all metal. That and when you're a beginner you want to do really stupid conversions.

Somewhere I heard that Space Marines account for 25% of all GW revenue. No, not 40k but ALL GW revenue, as in WHFB, 40k, specialist systems, everything and the rest. Marinade has most units and gigatons of fluff. But I for one would like to see the other factions getting more love. With more units, more fluff or at least nicer models every now and then they may get more players permanently (and less marines all around, death to the corpse-emperor). So there, Spaceboys ahoi.

Interesting idea, you will probably end up getting orks, dark angels, dark eldar or blood angels.

Surely if you pick the army with the least votes we should be voting for armies you shouldn't start as a first army?

You should always go with what you like the look of, choose for yourself and you'll be happier is what I'd recommend if this were an actual situation.

That said, Space Marines offer a wider variety of painting and modelling options that would be good for somebody brand new to the setting.

Necrons. Easy to paint so getting decent paint scores wouldn't take as long...and...the codex is good.
