Keep in mind that their list of trademarks is made up and sometimes even actively rejected by court or department. GW hasn't invented elves, dwarfs, humans, Moorcock's CHaos Star and grenade launchers, even if they claim to have.

Isnt there supposed to be a revisit to Armageddon in summer? Maybe a new box set centers around that. It might have an updated rulebook, but more for that campaign.

Either way, if a new starter set was released, with whomever, I would buy it. I have no interest in Blood Angels but would happily paint them up if they looked as nice as the Dark Angels in DV. I already have enough Orks but would find a way to integrate the new ones into what I have. And I prob wouldnt buy much more than that.

I think starter sets are a good way to pull peeps into new armies they probably wouldnt get into. I would love to see GW put out a new set based on current rules every summer. Imagine a set with Space Wolves vs Tau, or Ultramarines vs Necrons in the DV format. I would eat it up.

But that would be too good to be true for me. I guess it will be an updated rulebook and that is all. After all, it isnt like we dont have 3 different version of the rulebook now: the mini, 'The Rules' version, and the massive one I will never buy. Sure, why not make a 4th?

Happened to me in France. Now, it is way less likely to happen since a new, way better independent store opened right next to the GW store (they shared a wall ), and outperformed it so much the GW had to move away from this very good location (near one of the biggest high school in town !)

You know, I'd actually be ok with something like that. Why? Because starter sets are always great for cheap army building for us Vets, always come with some great models, and again - cheap army building.

Oh god, THIS is the part that made me twitch.

Bethesda never tried to trademark the world "Scrolls." Mojang was the one trying to trademark "Scrolls," and Bethesda opposed the registration because it would interfere with their own trademark for "Elderscrolls" by being too similar. It's like if someone tried to start up an energy company named simply "Bull," or a clothing company named simply "Klein," then tried to trademark it. If Redbull and Calvin Klein allowed those registrations to proceed then the door is opened for Bluebull and Kelvin Klein and all sorts of other brands that would undermine the tremendous investment they've made in their own brand.

Now GW takes their defense of IP to really bizarre extremes, but that's not to say that the general principles of intellectual property law aren't sound. Brands carry tremendous value in our marketing-driven society, and companies need tools to defend those investments against others who would piggy-back off their efforts.

A cheap source of Orks and a start to a Lamenters kill team?

That actually sounds like a pretty cool set up. The real question though is how much it will be.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Red Bull are currently trying to enforce their bull sign as a trademark against all the companies, pubs and so on that have used a bull as their sign in some cases for centuries.

If the IG were renamed to the AM no-one would use the name anyway. Everyone says Space Marines and Sisters of Battle, not their made up GW official names.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Although, it was amazing how many people stopped using Space Sharks and changed it to Caracharachadones, or whatever it was. All 3 of them at least.

And many (especially younger) players have armies made up of forces that take a wrecking ball to 30 years of background with their eclectic mix of mis-matched allies?

A marine walks in the most inhospitable environment possible, utterly inimical to life, and carves his name on to the heart of a plus-sized version of the Emperor's most incredible creation. Why not?

I completely agree that this is as daft as hell, but like it or not, if it's in the 'big book' it will be the accepted background within a few years and the accepted parlance will be 'Astroboys' or whatever they are called.

There is no integrity left in terms of creating a balanced (and good) system of rules, it's all been thrown in front of the truck carrying the massive dollar signs. Why should the quality and motivations of the background material be any more off-limits? The amount that people hold it close to their hearts, and number of fanatics who have followed it for 20 years or more, doesn't even come into it if it can be sacrificed for even a couple of % of extra sales.

I wonder who said that Orks will be in the next starter box. They were in the last one allready. Don't get me wrong, I am an ork player and I would love to expand on cheap ebay deals on half a starter set but don't you think that they'll try for something different than orks every second box?

Now, assuming there's allways some "good" and some "bad" faction in the starter box, my guess would be either Necrons or Dark Eldar (as both don't have their new codex yet) and BA/Wolves/GK as the "good" guys. Maybe, if all SOB players pray 9 times a day to the holy emperor and accumulate enough faith points, even SOB but that would just make too many people happy.

Suffolk, where the Aliens roam.

As much as I suspect the boxed rumour will give me salt poisoning, the idea of more plastic Orks, especially themed ardboyz would not be a bad thing and would see me buying a couple of boxes if true.

With a bonus that the one of the staff here who also plays 40K has a Blood Angels army so there is the potential of a split the box kinda deal.

I don't even KNOW anymore.

If they're moving to a more "GW brand" naming, then expect the Tau to change too. Them little aliens don't even come up first in a Google search.

Isn't that part of why it's now "Tau Empire" versus just "Tau" like in 3rd edition?

Not really, no. The change to 'Tau Empire' came with their second 3rd edition codex following the Eye of Terror campaign, to reflect the background change from 'benign conglomeration' to 'slightly sinister expansionists'...

They pray 9 times and receive ....
.......a limited release of limited plastics, only available in a starter set and have to buy/share the sprues with some non-SOB Models....

Sounds like GW could do it. " hey fans, we gave you monopose-snap-fit-AS, aren't you happy now?".
Looking at the DV set, details are not good. Not exactly what I want for new SOB models.

Aside from the fact that the DV plastics are rather good, there's no chance that Sisters will be in a starter box, since it's always Imperium vs _______, and the Imperium slot is taken up by Space Marines.

Tau never had a 3.5 codex.

Or if they did, it was specifically a rewrite to include the altered vehicle rules that killed Fish of Fury.

Well, that's some birthday money I'll be able to save for something else now, because if the Iron Hands changes are anything to go by, this name change will be accompanied by a counter-thematic fluff rewrite to justify the change that will amount to a massive kick in the balls to existing fans(and yes, I am bitter about the IH retcon).

Seriously at this point I might just superglue my hand to my forehead, because if GW keep going like this I'll be perpetually facepalming anyway.

Good thing then that GW still thinks grenade launchers are their IP. Otherwise we would get Apparatus Jectoris Granatorum or whatever they think is Latin.
