Well no, but since he's (at least trying to be) a comedian the topic should not be off limits, if he crosses your line, then don't pay any attention to him, simple enough.

You have to understand how deep the scars of world war 2 run and the recent rise of the far right in many EU countries. You also have to understand the current situation in many EU countries. There is allot of tension with immigrant communities in some areas and people like this are causing more tension and more problems.

Sometimes you need to give someone a platform for the world can see how stupid there ideas are, sometimes you need to deny them that platform so there ideas cannot spread.

Seems like the performance is largely based on jokes of poor taste.... ban away!

Racist jokes can be very funny, but it needs to be balanced, thoughtful, and hopefully poking fun at your own race. I don't see how it is funny to base a sketch around taking a piss on something iconic to a religion. It's just a stone wall to me, but then again I wouldn't want someone releaving themself on the side of my house either...

The French have this will-they-or-won't-they tension with antisemitism. I blame the Dreyfus Affair's high ratings and steamy climax.

Not living in an EU country myself, I can't really speak to that myself, but what sort of tension are they having, I'd assume its the formation of ethnically-segregated communitities (like how here, we have many suburbs being pre-dominatley Lebanese or Chinese etc), if so, we make it work, somehow, sort-of.

Fortunately for us, we live in a world where, time and again history has shown that stupid ideas end up going extinct as an inevitability, now while racism isn't gone yet, it is steadily on the decline and I think that with the near instantaneous communication that is allowed by the internet, this process will only speed up, now by how much and how long it will take is anybody's guess, humanity just needs a little patience

I'm usually a pretty stern advocate of free speech for everyone, which includes right-wing whackos, but in this case I'm cautiously leaning in favor of the ban for two reasons:

1) Many of his "jokes" address very specific groups of people or even individual persons while calling for or bemoaning the lack of a violent solution of his perceived problems with these people.

2) I have to trust what I read on the whole issue, but it seems that he has long surpassed merely being a comedian and has become a kind of figurehead for a political movement, which further accentuates the issues with point 1).

So even ignoring the so-called "anti-Nazi laws" of many European countries, which are all a bit questionable, he seems to have crossed the threshold of legal public behaviour.

Please ... STFU ...µ

Don't speak about subject you don't understaind !
Don't speak about subject your journalists doesn't translate in the good terms.

Americans humorists can make joke about irakian poeple (Achmed The dead terrorist in exemple) but french can't do sarcasm about Judes ???

Over this , in France , jude humorists can joke about themself but black humorists can't ???

So it's legal to joke on black poeple , on arabs poeple ... but not on judes ??? WTF ???

so please ... stop talking gak about something you dont kno/understaind ...

P.S : i'm not a Nazi (they should be killed), i'm not a racist , but i'm for équiality , and liberty of speach ... cause if we let judes complain about soha 60 years later , we should let humorist speak about the liberty of black community who was slaved since 1400 ...

Ahmed the dead terrorist makes fun of islamistic terrorists, not "the Iraqi people".

I doubt Jewish comedians in France make a lot of gas chamber jokes.

But if the presentation of this case in foreign media is so wrong, why don't you educate us instead of going on a rant?

You could start by explaining how his anti-semitic rhetoric helps to raise awareness of the black community's plight.

Well, you don't need to give a synopsis of his stage acts, uncovering the inaccuracies of what was reported would suffice nicely.

I also totally agree that the Jews should STFU until they have another five hundred years of persecution under their belts. Oh, wait, they have!

Finally, kindly watch your language. (Post reported.)

Indeed.

Bonus points for claiming to be passionate about freedom of speech whilst demanding that people STFU too.

Probably not in France, no. But French comedy sucks.

They are completely different things. Life being as it is, plenty of anti-semitic douchebags try to hide behind the anti-zionist label, but that doesn't mean there isn't a real difference between the two. A person can, for instance, be very concerned about continued Israeli settlements and the treatment of Palestinians by Israel without holding any ill-will towards Jewish people in Israel or outside of it.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I'm a little surprised as to how many Americans insist they have free speech when the country is full of bodies that work to control what is put in the public forum. Your film classifications, for instance, don't formally ban anything, but the power of a higher rating is so much that the end effect is pretty much the same thing. And at the same time, you have commercial privacy clauses that enforced by courts in such a strict manner, with little interest in the public good, that seem incredibly draconian to the rest of the world.

I guess what I'm saying is that free speech is a complicated thing. No-one has it, absolutely, no matter how much their own popular culture might tell them they do. We all value different things in different amounts, and so end up allowing different restrictions on our free speach... and the look overseas and are shocked at how other countries censure themselves.

I think he's a racist and should be condemned, but if this were the US he should have the right to say it. Now this is France so I won't knock them for that, especially as they have that separation of church and state thing down perfectly.

Yes, but where he in the US he wouldn't be able to make a movie with a decent amount of nudity and violence without having it given a high rating, greatly reducing the theatres it would be shown in, meaning low box office, meaning it would never get made. You might say 'yeah but government didn't ban it, it just gets made in to a non-commercial project through an archaic ratigns system that you have to use because that's how the system works', but the end result is the same - there's all kinds of movies that are able to made in France and elsewhere in the world that are simply too risque to be viable in the American market.

The MPAA isn't a governmental body, and R-rated films are made all the time.

Uh, yeah, that's pretty much grade anti-semitic bs right there. Describing the holocaust as '5 years of violence', just quietly writing off the hundreds of years of pogroms and violence that preceded the holocaust, and claiming that somehow 'no-one cares' about black slavery, thereby casting one's self as the martyr while dismissing the victimisation put on another group. That's basically how anti-semitism works. It's also how Nazism worked.

No-one fething reads, do they?

I mean, it was right there in the second sentence "You might say 'yeah but government didn't ban it..." and yet here you are bashing that in to a keyboard completely oblivious that I'd already mentioned that point and explained why it was lacking.

And yeah, R films get made, but plenty more films get chopped up and made a lot worse to avoid an R rating. And if you think good art ends at the limits of the R rating, well I guess you've long since forgotten the days of really good, confronting US cinema like Taxi Driver (a film that had to be slightly changed to achieve an R rating in 1976, but today would be miles from what is accepted as R).

It is a fair point you make, you won't find too many anti-semitic douches who'll just own up to hating Jews, instead hiding behind labels like anti-zionist. Which is one of the things that's always puzzled me about those people, if they don't like Jews then obviously they don't think there's anything wrong with hating Jews... so why can't they just admit to it?
