Why would they do this? Is this true or just an error on the GW website?

It was a good deal on craters so naturally they're getting rid of it. Not like I use craters much these days (rip Mech).

Old product retired?

IDK when the "moonscape" was introduced.

I remember a storm of complaint a couple of years ago when GW produced a set of craters and the detail on the actual product was much softer than the publicity pictures had led people to believe.

Maybe the moonscape is the same product, the moulds are worn out and need to be replaced or something.

GW recently have canned the Mighty Empires and Planetary Empires sets. Firms need to refresh their product lines and get rid of stuff that doesn't sell.

Still seeing it on the US site. But I can imagine them removing these as the sell out of back stock. GW has been moving toward a more crowded board since 6th came out.

moonscapes are pretty much mandatory in 6th, like tape measures

I don't get why GW don't inform their customers about this.

Yeah no kidding, so people can buy them up. What happens on ebay after the fact means bugger all to them.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Yeah that was the PlanetStrike terrain they are different to the moonscape as they have crashed ship parts and objectives molded on them. I have set somewhere still in the wraping they used resin masters for the painted pictures but the actual pieces where vaccum formed plastic and they lost a load of detail and have a weird lip on the edges that don't blend well with the table I never got round to using them as they require a good bit of work to get usable again. Pity the moonscape is going they seem to have discontinued a good few terrain pieces over the last year hopefully there is new stuff coming to replace it as paint and terrain is about all I buy from GW these days.

Moonscape is still available on the US site. Already have two sets of it, wonder if I should order another one or two? You can never have enough craters, especially with all the exploding vehicles in 6th (which I like, whether its my vehicles or my opponents', explosions are always fun).

You can just buy these from Amera for like a quarter of the price.

Significantly so. The Planetstrike markers were God-awful. I returned both of my sets.

The regular craters though are great. I use them in most games.

I just bought two packs as they are really nice. I wonder if this is just a redesign and they'll just add skulls (well duh) and marine helmets and stuff to make them more recognisable as a GW product. With less in a pack and a price increase.

Unless the GW set is of idiotically better quality, just head over to a site that carries Pegasus terrain (like the Warstore) and get their version which runs about 17 dollars- PREPAINTED. Might as well pick up their river sets, too, as they are hard plastic that snap together -prepainted as well- for the same price.

While sets like the Gardens of Morr are really cool, I see no real reason to buy terrain from GW, as you can get better stuff for cheaper prices elsewhere, like sets of fully textured hardfoam terrain from Micro Art studios.

The pegasus craters looks like they were moulded off giant puffy nipples.
To be honest there's something about the GW craters I just really like.

People actually bought those? They're so expensive for something that you can easily make yourself. I should make a tutorial for the ones I made out of sculpley. You just make a bowl, smooth the edges down so it blends onto a flat surface, then smash it up a bit and bake it. The glue tiny rocks and sand to it, and paint.

Links, gentlemen. Links.
You don't expect us to google these things ourselves, do you?

On the craters - I got a set (two sets?) for Christmas about 3? 4? 5? years ago. As DaveC noted, they have an odd lip, soft details, and to make things worse, they're pretty warped as well. I think I spray primed them, but not sure if I've seen them since I moved house a year ago. I know they never got finished...

Still not sure why I did this instead of calling you a lazy moocher but in more creative terms - call it an unintentional new year's resolution

Thanks Bolo. That joke was already made in my post. I half expected someone to LMGTFY one of the links. Though to be fair, links and pics are always more useful. Warstore's prices for shipping outside of the US have always been a bit OTT, but that Amera stuff looks amazing, and cheap. UK shipping is often quite reasonable as well, so I definitely need to look into their stuff in more detail... especially once my Secret Weapon and/or Games & Gears tables arrive....

They look like they're flat too. We use a mix of GW and homemade craters, and they always cause a huge problem after with placing infantry on top of them, especially if there was a squad inside the vehicle before it popped. We could really do with some flat craters
